I have heard about it, but I have not noticed it.

I can see advantage and disadvantage in doing that.

One major disadvantage is if I have already bought that product, why do they keep trying to promote to me what I already own?

I had this happen to me recently, I went to a site and noticed the ad stalked me for the next week or so. I found it to be really annoying because I had decided to buy the service somewhere else and had already ordered it.

I wonder what conversion rates are on those types of ads.

Great point! I doubt they have it wired into a CRM that tells them if I've purchased anything.

That brings up another interesting point, which is the time I will be "followed" by this particular ad. At this point, it feels like at least 4 days, but I can't say for certain.

It is a fairly recent tactic, and like all shiny new things, I'm sure it will gain momentum before its effectiveness is determined.

OK, I have a question. My spyware protection, virus protection and malware protection are updated DAILY, but yet I am absolutely convinced when opening thunderbird for email I am being watched by one company, they use the same format in all emails and it 95% of the time follows my web searches?!?!? Any help?

I'm assuming you refer here to the ultimate Big Brother, Google... I often wonder how much information they're collecting from my inbox.

But this type of contextual advertising isn't stalking...it's more like lurking.

I made a post about this last week I believe.

It's called Re-Targeting. The ecommerce store I work for does this for us, and without a doubt it really works. Basically when you view a website it installs a cookie and then displays ads to you on the various networks that the website/merchant partakes in.

It may give you the impression that "we" are "following YOU around," because well that is exactly what we are doing lol.

It's kind of crazy when you think about it, but it does lead to sales believe it or not.

Yes it does work if performed expertly and cleverly.
If you tweak the settings for the campaign to set conservative limits for how often a user would see your ads and by making them dynamic and personalized...it can work pretty well

Same here, have been looking for new colocation offers lately and how I see webhosting/colocation ads all over the place, on almost every website i visit.

I find this very annoying, why? When I visit a fishing website, then I expect to see ads related to fishing, not web hosting. Makes me go nuts.

This is not malware, it's just "intelligent" advertising.
They display ads related to your recent interests, no matter what website you visit and what type of content they have (so it seems).

Is it Google running it?

Yes, its happening to me too for a Forex banner ad, I noticed it last week.
This is really annoying and in my idea the CTR will be horrible.

Overstock (the store) I think is the worst with this. If I look at say, a pair of shoes there, the banner ad served to me for the next week is not only for Overstock but for the particular shoes I looked at! I find it pretty invasive personally. What if I were looking for a birthday present for my husband and then he came on and was served the ad (which is quite clearly personalized)? Plus, it just feels Big Brotherish. Who knows what else these companies are doing with my data.

yeah it's basically retargeting, a method nto widely talked about until recently, it's basically like a cookie that is stored when you visit a website. Then the banner will follow you around until you clear your cookies.

Remarketing is one of best advertising concepts available to anybody that utilizes banner ads.

I have worked in TV, radio, and print. The one thing that advertising pros know in those mediums is that repetition is the key to a successful advertising campaign. Most people do not buy a product the first time they see an ad.

I was just thinking about this because after doing a search on various forms of advertising when I went to 2 of my own sites on health with adsense on them, the adwords ads were on marketing (ie 75 off in adwords etc). I found this surprising as I had turned off the interest-based ads option in the adsense panel a while ago. It is a bit uncanny when you see your previous searches on non-related sites.

These are known as LSO, Super Cookies or Flash Cookies and you can't delete them in the regular way, as they are stored in the Adobe Flash player folder, not in your browser's cookie folder.

There's a couple of good Firefox plugins that will remove them and this will work for all browsers since the super cookies are stored in an Adobe folder.

You can also delete them by using an online Adobe tool. More info here:

It works like crazy so I hear...

Because let's say you visit a site and you don't buy, right?

Then you go to websites you often visit that you trust and you think it's coincidence that they have banners for the product or service you were considering buying.

That trust you have in your favorite sites is transferred over to the product or service you saw the other day.

Now you trust it, now you buy.

It's called Retargeting.

I notice the same ads following me numerous places including
Facebook. Given that the ads ARE generally about a topic that
I've shown an interest in, they make sense, AND I'm sure that
I've clicked on a few to check the products out.

So, I know that remarketing work from that and from testing.

The cost per click is often MUCH lower with remarketing too.

  I can see this working for some and annoying others. The masses are definitely swayed by repetitive ads no doubt about that. Its just like how radio commercials used to repeat a phone number 10 times in a row, now its a URL AND a phone number.
  
  Reminds me of the movie Bruce Almighty where Jim Carrey has all those subliminal messages pop up in front of Jennifer Aniston throughout her day to try and get her to love him again. Kind of interesting to note how he was playing GOD! lol
  
  Personally, I would like to still seek out the products I buy based on quality and reputation instead of dollars spent on following me around. BUT that's just me.

Yahoo does the same thing. They watch EVERYTHING You do on any yahoo site and make sure that the ads that start popping up do match what you've shown interest in.

Companies can spend millions to just have someone who randomly searches online for chocolates to see their company logo.

It's crazy.

I never pay any attention to the ads. So I won't even know if I'm being stalked.

The Idea of remarketing is not something new. It's just reinvented. And guess what, Because it's the big G. People tends to use G to search. That's why anything it put up on the table, you'll find it big news.

I must say I visited a site indochino.com looking for a custom suit, and now I see their banners everywhere.

and to be honest I've gone back to the site like 15 times because of the banners because I really like one of their suits so I'm going to say it's great advertising method

Yes, i also face the same thing as you while i saw Groupon everyday in everywebsite that do have Google Adwords.
But you can clear all the cookies so they unable to track you .
This remarketing is who ever view your Google Adwords banner, they will get track by the Google Adwords and you will keep see the same ads no matter where you go as long the website have google adsense.

Cookie stuffing has been frowned upon by every man and his dog, including big companies.

Now G and other companies want to make money by cookie stuffing and everyone cheering how awesome this is.

Hypocrisy at its finest.

Guess it is time to brush off those old values and get down to business. Clear my cookies and all so those stupid ads don't follow me around everywhere and then start my own campaigns to make some money from those unsuspecting individuals.
