How accurate is bouce rate in Google analytics

Hi Guys

I have a site which receives hits that are very targetted to the keywords they are typing in, and taken to an article including images which is relevant. However, when I look at analytics, about 80% of the hits are saying 100% bouce rate. Do you think this is really accurate??? It's certainly pretty bloody discouraging lol

Thanks
Phil

It is generally very accurate. Is it a review site or do you have outbound links very early in your articles? I find some of my amazon review sites have very high bounce rates because people take a quick look at the rating then click straight through to Amazon.

Thanks Dana - Nah, at the moment, I have no adverts, no adsense, affiliate links as I'm just concentrating on building traffic first. I probably need to look more at other sites in my niche and see if I can spot something that is vastly different to mine which could be putting them off.

    Thanks

I used to get upset before when I used to see that my site had an 80% bounce rate.. but since we have always ranked fairly high in the searches for our keywords, I stopped paying attention to this metric lol.

I agree with you to some extent, although there is much ranking for keywords and getting hits if the majority of people are hitting the back buttton. It must mean I am some how missing the mark with my market. I was curious about the bounce rate accuracy in case it really was something I could ignore, but I don't think it's something I can.

      Thanks for your input

True. However, another way to look at the bounce rate is this:

If the visitor finds everything he/she needs on the landing page of your website, it means that he will most likely hit the back button (since he already has all the info). That increases bounce rate but also suggests that your website provides good user experience.

        Just saying

...but I thought if that visit has 100% bounce rate, they left within such a short period of time, they couldn't possibly have got the info required. Hmm, not sure. Either way, I don't them running away so fast lol.

Haha.. oh well.. another mystery. What I can tell you from experience is that a high bounce rate has less to no impact on rankings. This is just what I have seen, others might have seen something completely opposite

Yeah, that's interesting. I always thought if you were getting a bad bounce rate, you would slip down the rankings as Google thinks you are not relevant? It's hard to know sometimes what Mr Google really takes into consideration.

One thing to do is make sure that the analytics code is on *all* your pages.

Then, it all depends on what you want people to do. If you want them to stick around and explore more, look at your site's navigation; if you don't already do it, do some internal linking on articles. Put links to related articles at the bottom of the article/posts (or sprinkle a few in between paragraphs).

Thanks, good tips. It is on a Wordpress blog so the code is on every site which is great. I also use a plugin which puts links that are related to other articles at the end of each post...but like you suggested, it would also be good to have links in the article itself to other articles, or of course to products.

      Thanks

hi, that's is not so very fine for me about how accurate is bounce rate in Google analytic.
It can't be defined exactly in any of the tool as it is very difficult to find accurate ratio of bounce rate.

So you feel it isn't accurate, do you have any experience or evidence of this?

Google has an agenda... you can only trust them so far.

Even with a high bounce rate, if the other traffic converts well, (like 10-20%, not the average 1-2%), then you are getting better targeted clients.

Well i believe visitor can stay 1 hour on your page but if he wont visit any other page on your website, it will count as bounce.

You can try to put only excerpts on home page or you can divide 1 post in 2 parts so visitors are forced to click to see 2nd part.

Also make your outbound links so they open on new tab.

Ah really? That wouldn't be so bad if that's the case. yeah, I've done the thing with snippets on the home page, so I'm hoping that will help.

It is possible to find bounce rate in Google analytic, but its not often true result cause its always changing in its result in Google.com. It depends on how amazing and useful our content is, a good Content is the most useful for visitor to stay in our page .
