What Is The Best Free Forum Script

I'm looking for a forum script preferable free or at least cheap that would allow the creation of both a free and a "protected members area" for paid members.

Should at least support paypal and automatic disabling of account when a member is not paid up.

Any recommendations?

Anyone have experience with "phpAutoMembersArea" ?

(Please let me know if this is an incorrect thread and I will move it)

Thanks

If your forum users are webmasters, I strongly suggest myBB as its similar to Vbulletin. So they won't get confused.

For non webmaster niches, I suggest PhpBB.

You can try purchasing second hand Vbulletin licenses, if you have few bucks to invest!

I do like the features of both Simple Machines and PhpBB. However, I do not see any payment feature in either one of these.

I agree, simplemachines or phpbb for free forum software. If you have the cash though and really want to customize the forum and do whatever you want with it I would definitely go with VBulletin.

For those of you who has experience with phpBB, there is apparently a script available for integrating paypal.
PayPal IPN Group Subscription Hack (phpBB Hack/Mod, Style/Template, Graphic or Other Download) - phpBBHacks.com

    Anyone tried this?

SMF has a paid subscription option in the Admin area that can be used to
create a Paid Membership Area which integrates with PayPal.

I tried installing this but don't see the paypal option in the admin area that you mention. Is it an add on or something?

Try myBB. It's great. I've used it before and it's used for a lot of big forums too. It's very flexible, has a sleek design and a lot of plugins.

It's definitely the best free forum software available IMO.

Installed latest version. actually just found the place to enter paypal address in the admin. However it's pretty much a "black box" so not sure if the script verifies payment before upgrading user.

OK, so I setup "Instant Payment Notification" and now my question is:
How and where do a user upgrade/pay?

I setup a Thread that is for premium users only
