If you are working fulltime online I'd suggest you
choose one ISP for your business and a second
for personal use. Then you'll have back up.

I use BT Broadband with a Sky account as back
up. For travelling/mobile I use G3.

I'm using Sky at the moment.. very fast, never down. Moved from ADSL24, which used to be awesome but something changed.

If you want a bulletproof connection, Zen is pretty hard to beat.. pricey though. I use them for hosting and gotta say their customer support is top notch, if I wasn't so against keeping all my eggs in one basket, I'd be using their broadband too.

You can get a leased line adsl. This is a direct line from the internet provider and usually your own server. A lot of big companies use this solution. However when I enquired about the cost of leasing a line I think about 5 years ago the cheapest provider was £3k a month with a £5k set-up fee! Minimum contract was 1 year. It's not protected though but usually includes a guarantee of minimum downtime in terms of hours.

Just to clear this up, a leased line and ADSL are completely different technologies. In fact, the terminating equipment isnt a phone socket, its a dedicated port depending on what leased line you are paying for.

The costs depend on location; london is of course the most expensive but ultimately it depends on the distance from an exchange and where it terminates on the site/premises. Unlike DSL, where typically the further from the exchange you are, you get worse speeds a leased line will be guaranteed.

It's not protected though but usually includes a guarantee of minimum downtime in terms of hours.

Not strictly true; a leased line is usually, at the very least, protected over the SDH network (after the exchange) and in many cases you can get protected circuits that provide a line from 2 different exchanges to the premises. (but the cost goes up of course)

Virgin cutting out is a one off you should just stay with them because they off the fastest BB service 50Meg...
My sky BB cut out and so I changed to Talk Talk I used a 3 Dongle pay as you go in between the change..

I have had the same problems in the past and it is more than a little bit frustrating!

I have a BT Business account for my broadband and I recommend doing this if you are running a business.

The ratio is a lot lower so you get a faster connection more of the time.

+ you are meant to get 24 hour support but have to admit the support is average.

Well worth looking into business broadband accounts if you rely on your connection for work.

I use Sky, I did have a few problems with it about a year ago, but since then (touch wood), they have been fine, and their support isn't too bad. You're probably just as well to stick with Virgin, as Branson is a bit of a dude :-)

I have the BT Infinity Business line - 40Mbps download and 8Mbps upload.

The call centre is in the UK and the service is solid.

Remember there is no perfect system, even with our own server it goes down. Just use the extra money you would have paid to one service provided and get a second service provider.

Was with Virgin now with Sky. Sky offer a good package. Virgin was much, much better service and after-sales.

The best bet? Get an iPhone 4. If your Internet goes down at home, simply share your iPhone internet connection wirelessly with your laptop or computer - fast speeds and very reliable

BT Business is good, there is no contention ratio, so you see a good speed boost, particularly in peak times, plus they have a 4 hour fix time so you're not down for long. I've found it to be very good - much better than Sky!

I'm with PlusNet - I use their Pro package for a prioritised service. I live in a rural village, so no high speed broadband here - - - - yet.

They have all UK call centres and they are the only provider I recommend to my clients. I always say this with my fingers crossed, but so far they have never let me down. If there's a problem they have always been friendly, helpful and sorted it out. And I've spoken to them many times on behalf of my customers.

We use BT in the office and also I use BT at my home, i dont really have problems with them and if my internet does go down they are very helpful with their customer service

I've used Zen Intenet for years.

They are fast and reliable. Excellent customer support based in the UK. Pure internet, no bottlenecks or slow downs during peak time. Not the cheapest though.

I'm also with BT. I made the move after a few disapointments with some of the smaller broadband companies.

So far I've had no problens with BT and the connection speeds are pretty good.

I'm on a Virgin 50mb line myself and they are constantly cutting me off.

At least every time they cut you off if you call up and complain you get money off your bill. And that stacks up each time - so I got next to free internet last month.

Jason, I've had the Virgin service since it began, (and before that, when it was NTL). I've had a couple of small service losses, but overall the service has been great. The customer service (although some of it outsourced abroad) is still pretty good (and free).... For what it's worth, for the cost - it's pretty damn good.. And FAST!...
