How do I charge for a banner ad?

I have a micro-niche website that I have been running AdSense on. The site is low traffic, but ranked very highly for some long-tail keywords.

Today I received an email from someone claiming to be from an advertising agency, who wants to run banner ads on my site for one of his clients, and asking what I would charge.

I have never directly sold advertising on any of my sites, so I am at a complete loss not only as to what to charge, but also how to bill, get paid, handle renewals, etc.

Can anyone give me some guidance or point me to some good resources? I would like to give this person an answer today. Assuming the email is legitimate, I would be excited to have some direct advertising on my site.

Steve

P.S: Here is his email, in part (I'm omitting his name and agency, etc.):

We would like to place their banner at your site ________.com. We are interested in banners of the following sizes: 160x600, 240x400, 300x250, 336x280, 468x60, 728x90. What can be your price for one banner (banner should appear at ALL pages of your site) of abovementioned sizes (please specify the place for the banner - top, bottom, left, right)? Please mention a normal link for banner, without javascript code and set prices in US dollars per month.

I have seen text links go for like $10-30 a month so if its a banner he wants then you can start by knowing that. It could help to check a few sites related to your niche and see what they charge. there are tons of adservers networks who would show pricing. Try starting there.

Here's something to consider when selling ads... Make sure you get to check out what the ad is for before committing to anything. Chances are it's an affiliate trying to profit through arbitrage (paying you less than he earns on affiliate commissions from the ad). If it looks like an affiliate, try running a similar (or the same) offer yourself and see what you make.

    blillard:

    Thanks for the feedback.

I don't want to undersell myself nor to quote a price that makes him laugh and disappear. As I said, my site is low traffic -- but maybe its ranking for specific keywords is considered valuable.

Here's what I just emailed back to him:

    Hi, Mr. ______,

Thanks for contacting me. I would be pleased to run your client's banner ads. I will work up some pricing information and get back to you this evening (I'm snowed under with some other tasks at this moment).

Thanks again, and I look forward to working with you.

    Thanks; that's good advice.

In his email, this person listed several categories of consumer items that his client sells. None of them is the same as the specific consumer item that my blog is about. But maybe they figure that people visiting my blog would be interested in other consumer, lifestyle type products.

Just yesterday someone paid me $50 for a text ad. The differences were:
        a) he contacted me privately
        b) he knew which site he wanted to place his ad on
        c) he mailed me the link code so I could see it was legit and add it myself

The lesson is - do your homework folks. It took me all of around 2 minutes to find out that info on Mr Dumont!

If you're already using Adsense you could just take your earnings from last month and tack on 25% or so, just to get started with negotiations. Chances are they're hunting for bargain prices though, but you never know...

Wow, thanks for that. My dreams of money have been dashed, but at least I have been saved from a scam.

Although the person used a different name, the email is otherwise practically word-for-word the same as that shown in the scam warning.

Although I emailed him back, I won't continue to do so. And I certainly won't download any "WordPress plug-in" of his!

I got the same e-mail, though he used a different name. I replied with some rates and haven't heard back yet. I was suspicious, but couldn't figure out what the angle could be, as they weren't selling anything. But after reading this thread I certainly won't open anything they send me.

Not long ago, someone contacted me about putting a text link on one of my sites, and they actually paid me and it's apparently legit. There are lots of scams out there, though, and this sounds like it could be one of them. What's the point though -is it some kind of hacker who wants to get your blog data?

I'm not technically knowledgeable enough to begin to comprehend the many (evil) ways someone might use this. However, one thought pops to mind. Maybe he's trying to set up a whole bunch of so-called zombie sites, that will then be used to send out millions of spams.

I'm glad I found this thread -this guy just sent me the info to install the plug-in! He's apparently using the name Evan Hubert now. I did a search, and found this entry he put on someone else's blog -

"My name is Evan Hubert and I represent Gelbert Agency. We are making an advertising campaign for Lacoste Company (it is a French company producing clothes, footwear, perfumery etc.) and we would like to place their banner at your site..."

I still don't know what he's up to, but I'm sure not going to install that plugin!

The easiest way is to ask them to pay month or per year. Pay pal is great for this as people claim to lose checks in the mail and will get mad if you pull their ad, but I see myself taking more checks in the days to come. Pay pal is not what it use to be for me.

I represent Larko Agency. At the moment we are preparing an advertising campaign for Lacoste Company (it is a French company producing clothes, footwear, perfumery etc.) We already have designed banners for the campaign, they are the following sizes: 160x600, 240x400, 300x250, 336x280, 468x60, 728x90.

Thank God for the Warrior Forum!

I got the same email form 'Eliott' claiming to be from larkoagency and doing work for Lacoste.

He wanted to place a banner on my site DonegalCoast.com

My wife reminded me that my poor wee site gets little traffic and isn't relevant to 'Eliott's niche, so I Googled this larko lark and found your good selves!

Btw, I emailed 'Eliott' back in French and he replied in English so I doubt he's even a francophone.

I sent him a final email telling him to get an honest job and to stop taking advantage of innocent people.

No doubt my moralising lecture will succeed in showing a substantial majority of spammers in North Africa the error of their ways!
