Embedding YouTube videos - legal?

Is it legal to embed any YouTube video onto your blog, or is that a copyright infringement?

Thanks,

Jon

    Hi Jon

I suspect that if it were not legal then YouTube would not publish embed codes in the first place!

Remember, YouTube already police the videos and remove those that infringe upon copyrights.

I'm no lawyer of course, but I think in this case the law is pretty clear. But if it isn't you may find more information here:

They provide an embed code and ways to share their videos. However, if someone who posted the original video was violating a copyright the person embedding it may have problems. I've read about that happening to someone on another forum.

I was wondering if there is a reference to something that confirms that it is allowable. I can embed a video from another blog and put it on my site using an iframe, but that doesn't mean to say it is legal.

You will know when a youtube video doesn't allow the video to be embedded on external sites. The video will not play & will let you know you'll have to go to the youtube site to watch the video.

If you are using the embed code that youtube gives you and you are not hampering with their player then you can embed all you want.

Where people get into trouble is they download the videos on youtube, and then upload them to their own channel and change things. That is the copyright infringement.

As a video maker, I can choose to hide videos or even block you from getting the embed code to share. So if someone does not want you to embed their video they can hide the code from you or make it unplayable off of youtube.

    It's all legal!

When the owner of the video first uploads the video to youtube, they have an option to make the video public (embed) or not public (no embed).

The default youtube setting is to make the video public, If the owner of the video missed the setting & makes it public, that's them not you.

BTW, the owner of the video can change that public setting anytime they want after the video is uploaded to youtube, so If they don't like the video being public they will have to change their video settings. Again, not your problem.

It's completely legal. The person who puts the video up gets to choose whether to show the embed code to viewers. If there's an embed code there that means it's perfectly legal.
