Advice for getting to no.1 in Google

G'day Warriors

I have spent the last couple of years transforming my work's website from something that looked like it was developed in the 1970's before Bill Gates even gave birth to the internet, into something that is both useful and respectable.

Anyway, the website is www.australianracingboard.com.au and we are the peak governing body for horse racing in Australia. Currently if you search Google (AU) we are ranked no. 10 for the term "horse racing" and it is my goal for 2009 to try and work our way up the rankings.

If anyone is able to provide me with any advice, guidance or assistance in acheiving this, it would be much appreciated. I would also love any feedback that people might have on the site.

I don't have a lot of experience in web development / management, so I am not sure if I am doing things incorrectly. We also don't have an IT department, so I have been trying to learn html and currently use NVU to update it, because we have a service provider, but they charge quite a bit to make changes.

I am also not quite sure how to assess the websites ranked above, and how to determine what they are doing better then me, so any advice on that would also be appreciated.

Cheers

Jake

Get more link backs to your site with the anchor text horse racing...It will go up. The higher the pr of sites linking back the higher your ranking would be.

If your looking for High PR backlinks then PM Angela Edwards she supplies 30 High PR backlinks per month. I'm into my 3rd month using her backlinks and I'm no#3 in MSN and Yahoo for a competitive keyword. Googles ranking is still not in the top#100 however the traffic has increased significantly.

She charges $5 per month ( not sure if shes put the prices up) but for me her service is a no brainer.

TKO is right on the nail, Angela's monthly list is the best value I've come across - don't miss it.

Also, write some articles and submit to EzineArticles.com and other top sites.

Do a press release, you'll probably find advice on this forum as to the correst way to do this.

Ensure that your "on page" optimisation is good. Again you'll find advice galore in the forum.

Don't fall for the hype from people who claim to show how to get # 1 in Google, only to find that their success is with esoteric terms like "Gobi desert over eighties nude hang gliding club". That's not to say that long tail search terms are not good. I'm just pointing out they should be for something that people are actually searching for. I don't know your market, but "horse racing Australia" could be less competitive but still attract traffic.

Always bear in mind that prima facie evidence of search engine success is less important than getting a ton of targetted traffic.

    I hope this helps.

Gday DaddyG, Angela provides 30 sites that range from forums, blogs, social site etc that are dofollow. Some of the sites she has unearthed you would never find or even think of looking for them in a million years. The PR ranking of these sites range from 9-5.

She also provides a small pdf that shows you step by step where to place your link for every site.

Like I said, for $5 per month its by far the best money i've spent for backlinks.

    Hi Jake:
Ryan is right. You need links. Make sure they do not all look the same and have the same anchor text.

For example, instead of having 1000 links going to your home page have most going to subpages and have all your subpages link to your home page. Also, have the anchor text change like "Horse Racing News", "Horse Racing Australia", "Horse Racing Board", etc.

Do not get all your links at once, but add them slowly a few at a time. Too many links too fast raises a red flag. Also, instead of ten pr7 links you need to get something like 1000 pr2, 100 pr3, 10 pr4, 3 pr5, and one pr6. This looks more natural because there are more low pr sites.

Have all your subpages contain the phrase "horse racing" as this is your theme. Keep adding new pages and refresh content on old pages every day. Search engines like fresh content. You goal is at least 1000 new pages per year. Have blogs link to your new pages.

Payperpost and reviewme can send you both traffic and buzz. Buzz is important to get natural links. I use lots of links to boost the site score.

Social networking sites like DIGG can send you both PR and traffic. There are many smaller sites that will allow you to add posts about your webpages. Post exciting news stories as "link bait".

Although Youtube blocks PR, it can send you lots of traffic, and many people that find out about you will link to you.

Speaking about blocking PR, you have many links that are offsite and are leaking link juice. Unless these sites agree to link back to you, you can nofollow them.

    In ARB News you have links to PDFs. Instead link to web pages and have those web pages link back to the home page. You are sending link juice to a PDF. Nofollow links to pages like {legal, register, about me, ect.}

Include lots of pictures. Not only do they boost your rankings through the ALT TAG, but also people will find you through an image search. Remember to include video and audio on your site to make it more interesting, but also people will search video using Youtube.

You can get many new visitors through Youtube. Include a link to your website in the video description. Then go to DIGG and other social networking sites and post your video. The idea is to get more viewers and links.

Thanks for all the advice, it is much appreciated.

I had often wondered about the media releases being pdf. I will work on changing them, so that they are web pages instead.

    A couple of further questions.

    1. Can anyone reccomend a site that lists sites/directories where you can place a link to your site for free?

    2. Does my site need a sitemap, if so, how to I go about creating one?

    3. How do I make an outgoing link a "No Follow" link?

    4. Is it best to have less or more Meta Keywords?

    1. I can recommend the software I used but dont want to post a link here PM me if you want them 1300 directories and 120 Article submission its manual but it cuts your time in half for submitting
    2. As long as the spiders are finding their way to your new post etc you dont need a site map
    3. Not sure on that one
    4. Less Try to target each page to two keywords and then in the content of that page include that same keyword about 2-3 times every 100 words and the last word and title should also be that keyword.

    Change your title from:

"Australian Racing Board (ARB) - Horse Racing"

    To:

"Horse Racing Board | Australian Racing Board (ARB)

    Jake,

Mike hit the nail on the head - it's actually very simple and you can do it easily, it's just a matter of time.

You could even set your sights a little higher and get all top 10 positions in Google just by rounding out your plan and generating some other web entities that can show up (like squidoo lense, hubpages, blogs etc...) This also allows you to focus on many keywords and cross link your own sites to increase the authority and SERPS for your main site.

I do this for people/businesses a lot and it always works.
