Is Google+ Dying a Slow Death

No - I don't have any article to link to... it's just a gut feeling.

I'm currently thinking about Google+ about as often as I ever thought about LinkedIn.

Anyone else felt that vibe or otherwise?

  • It just debuted. And its still growing. Let's put it this way.

I had a Facebook account in college back in 2005. That was when you could only join if you had a .edu email address. Yep that's right. And now look at it. It's the most popular website in the entire world.

Things take time. A social networking platform that has the most successful internet Goliath behind it? Yeah I don't see that dying anytime soon.

  • I think its just reorganizing to get things ready for the loads of businesses to come on board. Once the floodgates are open I'm sure it will be crazy. My dots.
  • I think Google+ doesn't give anything substantial that Facebook doesn't offer, and so why would I go to the effort of maintaining two social networks?

I therefore think Google+ as it is now will die, but if they do something revolutionary, then it could be a Facebook destroyer.

    Circles are not revolutionary :-)

    • There are over thirty (30) social sites, so why not take advantage of a bunch of them when they are interlinked?
    • This isn't true for photographers. The integration between Picasa and G+, the photo viewer, and the fact that they retain your metadata are all killer features for us. There are a couple thousand very high-end photographers on G+ today, and that population is growing quickly.
  • They are for sure getting way too big and way too arrogant.
  • We shall soon find out.

I am positive Google team is thinking outside the box before creating the Google+.

Perhaps they have a surprise for us.
  • The surprise is they just added a games page which includes Angry Bird

    • Awesome thanks for sharing

On a side note, i really hope that they come up with something revolutionary soon.

      Cheers,

    • No surprise there... 75% of people are playing games while on Facebook. No games, less people. It's a no brainer for a 'socia'l network.
    • Oh dear! Why would you bring that to my attention? Just wasted valuable work time playing it for half an hour... Doh!
  • It seems us, but actually not, Many people were using it, though facebook has big part in usage, but it will definitely grow in coming time.
  • Google Plus Is more comparable to Linkedin I would Say,In My Opinion.
Have to be 18 to join, be invited. etc.
I think they want a professional Business type thing going with them and are just trying to build a stable base for right now!

    • I'd say it's hardly dying. 25 million users in the first month and now they're adding games and rolling out business pages soon... the best is yet to come.

    • I just read an article this morning stating they are going to add a game page. To be honest that is the only reason why I still use FB...for the games. I have started using Google+ for regular interactions, but I haven't done any marketing with it...yet

  • I am not sure on what is happening with Google+, they really need to let it run otherwise people will get a bit annoyed. I wanted to create an account once, and it did not allow me as it said that there was not free spaces left

    • For a while they were really limiting new signups, which was expected because it was a limited field trial. They can't just let 200 million people in all at once. They need to be able to handle the growing pains as they happen.

  • I actually did not really like Google + and there really isn't much of a reason for people to start using it.

Now it could just be my opinion, but I do think a lot of people are not really impressed with it.

    • Google hasn't even began advertising for Google + yet. I believe once they begin advertising and promoting that they will be as big if not bigger than Facebook.

  • Heidi,

A lot of business professionals see LinkedIn as more relevant to their needs than Facebook et al. Maybe because it's harder to spam than Facebook and Twitter is the reason why it's not so popular in IM circles.

I can see that "Social Media Fatigue" and inertia might make people shy away from Google+ but I think it does have a lot of possibilities.

Maybe we'll see this business model in the future:

Facebook for spamming, Google+ for building targeted relationships.

    • The big thing that G+ has going for them is that they listen to what their users want. Facebook, on the other hand, just does whatever they think the user wants, which most of the time turns out to be 100% wrong.
  • Too hard to keep two identical social network account. I feel Google+ same as Google pluz and wave
  • Until Google+ has something new, I am not gonna spending time on it.

  • I prefer Google+ over Facebook. People are saying Google is arrogant, but both of them are so it doesn't make a difference. The only difference is Google+ has less people and is still on trial mode compared to Facebook which is open to everyone.
  • I think G+ is a good start than any other.
I mean compare to their other social media term.
I think this is better and popular than ever.

    ^_^ don't you think so ?
  • Beware if you have an Adsense account for your same email account will be publicized in the search engine!
  • Its a little hard to call it at this point, but one thing I do know is this.

My friends on Facebook, none of which are technically minded, nor marketers, couldn't give a rats ass about Google+

As its already been said, unless Google+ offers something of substantial difference to that of Facebook, then I see little reason for people to shift. Especially when they have dozens, if not hundreds of friends, and photos already listed there.

I have a G+ account myself, and I think Ive logged in about half a dozen times. Its quiet in there, you can hear the crickets.
    • [ 1 ] Thanks
  • But LinkedIn is still around and doing great, right? I don't see that as the best example, regardless of how much YOU think about it (sorry don't mean to shout, just for emphasis).

Nothing is everything for everybody, so it could just be you.

I know some people who don't use Facebook for anything but it's still a powerful force in online business, right?

Just because you don't think about it doesn't mean it's not going to be big.

I don't think things move that fast in the internet world, for it to already start dying a slow death, right? ha ha. If you think about it that way, then every business is dying a slow death from the moment it starts as everything has to end, eventually.

In fact, from the moment we're all born we all start dying a slow death! Hmmm, sorry for such sad sentiments, ha ha.

But, back to the point, let's give it a year before saying it's dead, aye? It's still a project/beta/limited field trial mode.

Long way to go yet in this product, for google's team on this...

    • My 20-year-old college student son just told me that he plans to migrate away from facebook to use G+. Not sure if he's representitive of his demographic, but if so, look out.

Someone mentioned social fatigue and I agree. I rarely go to facebook anymore and from what I've seen of G+, I personally have no use for it until and unless it can do something for my business.

At this point, my crystal ball says, "Meh..."
  • Actually something else that Ive noticed.....

Im getting consistent "likes" on my sites, yet absolutely NO +1's.

Anyone else findnig this trend to be the same on their sites?
  • Hey guys,

I sat down with a Google executive today. (one of the perks of one of my uber huge clients) and we did some talking, and some Googling...listen, Google is about BUSINESS. Businesses who advertise is BIG money for Google. What they are doing is simply catering to huge businesses that give them MILLIONS in advertising. When Google+ for business launch, you will see some MAJOR players jumping at the chance to get their profiles set up. Why?

Well my dear Warrior friends...as your Google+ circles grow, and activity on your profile grows, and your +1's begin to add up...guess who will LOVE you? Google search...that's who...this activity will be largely MARRIED to the search engines...*cough* ummmm...any internet marketers out there? If you make ANY money from Google search, you are out of your mind not to be digging into Google+ tooth and nail. You can watch the rollercoaster from afar and make whatever predictions you want, but for me, I am jumping aboard and seeing where it takes me.

  • Definitely not, Google + will be the strongest social network going one day, ive written a post all about it Why Google + is the Facebook Killer « SEO Positive Blog my post looks at every aspect of both Facebook and Google + and explains why G+ will win this battle
    • [1] reply
    • I have seen so many every day folks bashing it on facebook. Many of them feel that it's stupid exclaiming that "it's just a rip off of facebook" and these are people who probably won't give it the time of day.

My feeling is that Google has not offered any new angle on this and people can smell that. I personally have no faith in it.
  • Maybe, but even if it is Google will probably make some changes to make it stand out with what they have to offer and won't just give it up like that.
    • [1] reply
    • I saw a rebuttal blog comment elsewhere on this issue, by someone saying for some "Internet marketing" pages there are more G+ likes than Facebook likes, so G+ must be doing fine.

More likely, someone BOUGHT a bunch of G+ clicks for the IM page.

That's going to be a problem for Google.

      .
  • I don't know if G+ will beat out facebook but I do know the G+ you can put on sites will eventually be what runs the search engine and I'm going to do everything I can to make sure my site is one of the top. They're trying to kill SEO and replace it with what people actually want to find, so anyone who does SEO better take notice of this or they could be buried.
  • I do not believe it is possible for anything to die "a slow death" two months after its release.

Especially when it's 20 million strong, still growing, just dropped a game API, and has yet to open the doors on business pages. G+ is barely getting started.
    • [ 1 ] Thanks
  • There are a lot of reasons that I am on facebook - business is not the biggest of them. I am planning on branching - not replacing - and going to google+ but that will be a more business oriented objective than facebook.

Frankly, I just see a lot of other people making the same type of split in purposes on these two sites rather than choosing one over the other.
    • [ 2 ] Thanks
  • To my knowledge Google+ is not even opened to the public yet, it's still in beta testing phase and you can only use it if you have an invitation. i am not sure it'll kill Facebook but it'll be a strong competitor. People are established on facebook it'll be difficult to migrate all their friends, the Circle is the only "great" thing about Google+ if Facebook implements that feature there wont be any reason to use G+
  • Google+ isn't dying at all, whatsoever. They're still in the beginning phases and studies are already showing they're going to bypass Twitter + LinkedIn a year from now. That's without them even promoting G+. They'll be around for a long time.
  • The engagement levels on Google+ are still much higher for me. Then again, it's all in who you follow and interact.

If you're hearing crickets on Google+, it's up to you to find a new party.
    • [ 2 ] Thanks

    • Exactly. It's up to you to follow/circle/interact with interesting people.

Engagement levels are much higher for me on G+ too.
    • Yeah. Facebook.
    • Well, you invited me, (thanx), it is I who not been active on it as I am waiting to see if & when the other shoe drops. Lol.

IF Google adds 'Pages' or Groups, (I never have understood the difference between the two other than Groups asks if they can access your entire life to use), or mini sites that are business friendly. (We already know they will NOT be **** Berry, IM, Dating, or Weight Loss friendly), AND rank those pages/sites over FB's... then they stand a good chance of becoming useful to a lot of people that sell on line.

(& There are a ton! For example, in Breast Cancer alone, I know of 150+ people selling everything from recipes to pajamas to mittens! Few if any of whom are members here. I imagine every niche has the same.)

      Just a thought
  • People are saying Google+ doesn't offer anything new, but I don't really understand that. They have an awesome hangout feature, circles that are useful for filtering posts, sparks, and more. I think Google+ is awesome. The interface could be a bit better, but that's about it.
  • I looked at G+... huge yawn.

All my friends and family are on Facebook. Why would
we all want to migrate to something else just to do the
    same thing we're doing there?

The obvious answer is we wouldn't... and neither will the
millions and millions and millions of other Facebook users who
are not internet marketers. That would be nearly all of them

  • I think google+ never be like Facebook, just my opinion ..
  • I think Google+ is an experiment, right now depending on how user response is they might take it further, but the plan is to always use the power of social media to decide rankings, which would thwart the efforts of those trying to circumvent their algorithms
  • Well I'm using fb much more than google+... inertia I guess
  • Facebook is still where most users are still comfortable. That will not change anytime soon. Facebook I'm sure will integrate circles, etc to compete. Google+ may give them a run for their money but in the end, Google just doesn't do social well.

The only way I feel Google would take the lead is if Facebook just became overridden with spam like what happened to Myspace. In this case, the users would naturally seek a new spam-free place to connect.
  • i highly doubt google cares about their current signup rate or they would likely take it out of beta and allow everyone to signup without an invite. They know theyll get plenty of people signing up, similar to gmail which took ages to leave beta and still took off. The big question is will people use it, i would think those most likely to use google+ are those currently heavily using facebook, and how likely are they to leave facebook for google+ and on that note will they use both?
  • the best thing google ever created was google

since then they've created a slew of crappy products and they buy all the good ideas; youtube admob etc...

I wouldn't be surprised if they failed here to

    but will see i guess
  • Well - Thanks for all the responses. I actually forgot to subscribe to this thread - so it was fun reading everyone's comments for the first time today.

I'm still getting people adding me every day to Google+ - probably because of this thread:

    http://www.warriorforum.com/local-me...r-circles.html

I also noticed recently that email notifications now show pictures of people and summarized comments.

(an attempt, no doubt, to lure us back in....)

It's worked once or twice on me - but only for a few seconds.

I may go to my 'circle' of 174 Internet Marketing Friends (or whatever the number is) to ask for advice on a technical issue. I bet I'll get a ton of responses.

I should do a case study - ask the same question here - at the same time - and compare the results.

    Now that would be interesting.

    • I love the idea of being able to divide people into circles - and having as many circles as you want. Like you said, you could get quick responses in just about any niche if you have it set up right.

Right now Google has a lot of leverage if they use it right. Webmasters will jump through any hoop google gives them if they find out it effects their SEO score. This could be huge for getting website to integrate google plus.

  • Nothing yet...(5 min later...)

but I did find out that a Anti-Gay Senator got busted asking for 'gay sex' at a hotel and that there's a scandal about insider trading at prior to the downgrade.

In that sense - G+ reminds me more of Twitter than Facebook - except it's visual like Facebook. Some heavy users just try to post something interesting and newsworthy every 3 minutes.

They either have no life - or they've got some auto post system already figured out.

But it's working for them - if getting lots of Circle Friends -is the goal.

  • Google+ is going to become a household name like Google Buzz and Google Wave.

  • Google plus is not dying. Infact its growth became slow but this is not the point to worry because it has growth alot in its intial era.
  • Hey,

One fact is known to everyone that Google+ cannot takeover Facebook and that not because I am saying or something but Facebook is just awesome and it truly deserves to be where it is. But yes this is also true that Google+ is not dying a slow death, though it may close in coming recent future. The reason of Facebook being at top are the features and the way it gets updated is very different. Most of the updates of Facebook is aimed at helping Internet Marketering and at these all things Google+ lacks. As per my experience and knowledge I don't think that in coming ten years any social network can overtake Facebook.
  • As of now, i am enjoying having an account on Google+.. Just like Facebook, you can always mingle and find new friends here. I think it is nit dying but just had starting a different way of social networking on the web.
