I use Phone.com. $15 per month for 300 minutes via my 800#, and that includes voice mail and a bunch of other features. Most of my business communication is done via email, so 300 minutes is plenty for me. The service works well. One thing to be aware of though... the call quality is sometimes not as good as a typical landline setup, but it's still pretty decent overall. Well worth $15/mo.

I use a 1-888 number for calls from the US (I am based in europe) and I pay below $5 a month plus for the calls I receive (company called Callture)..

Not sure if that is a good deal, didn't research much when we set it up a few years ago.

We're huge fans of RingCentral and have been using them for several years now. Their service is EXTREMELY flexible! Probably the coolest feature is the ability to set up "rules". You can choose what hours to be "business hours" and what hours to be "non-business hours". Then have it go directly to voicemail during non-business hours. When you do have it ring through, you can have it ring multiple phone numbers simultaneously or in a fixed sequential order. Another cool feature is that when you receive a voicemail from a customer, it is emailed to you as an attachment.

We love using RingCentral & Skype together. You can have RingCentral go directly to your Skype # & then take customer phone calls on your computer using a headset. This keeps your hands free for entering in order details or working on something else while a customer blabs on about something!

The lowest plan is ~$15 a month and the step up from that is ~$30. You can get your first month free at: Toll-Free Phone Number for Your Ecommerce Store by RingCentral

Oh, another cool thing about RingCentral is that eFax is built into your 800 #. You can give customers or suppliers your 800 # as your fax number. When someone sends a fax to it you are sent the fax via email in PDF format. It's very cool!!

You can get your own 800 number (or local number) for FREE, no setup costs or anything.

Twilio Cloud Communications | Web Service API for building Voice and SMS Applications

I use them very often. They only charge per-minute, no silly charges, pay for only what you use, can be customized to basically do anything a telephone can.

Solutions like that are good until you're actually getting a lot of calls. Once you start receiving a lot of phone calls "pay per minute" plans tend to get VERY expensive. The ~$30/month RingCentral plan gives you like 1,000 minutes a month & that's generally enough for 1-2 very busy ecommerce stores or 5-10 low-volume ecommerce stores.

I use AccuConference. For $2/mo you get a toll free number that you can forward to any other number. I have it forwarded to my magic jack number and use that as my business line. If I don't pick up, I get an email with the voice message. You can also use one of their toll free numbers as a fax line and have it send the fax to your email.
