Hi there

Is there anybody out there who can explain to me how google alerts works and why I should use them? I am totally new to this and am clueless.

Hi Diana,

You can use Google Alerts to have Google email you anytime a particular keyword is published on the internet.

It is really useful for keeping up with the latest news in your niche.

You can also use it to montior when your own name, product or website is mentioned online.

I also use it to monitor particular people who's online activity I like to keep a close eye on. You can use this to stay on top of what competitors are up to, or to be kept up to date on what key people in the industry are doing, or what is being said about them. i.e. stuff that they are not emailing you directly aboutl, like for example, blog posts.

Shows how clueless I am. I thought it was a way to identify what people are searching for. So how does one find out what people are searching for in google?

I use this all the time and like mark said it is fantastic!

I know the instance something of use is published on my chosen keyword/topic. This is especially good if you run an authority site as you are never too far behind the competition.

For example I have an authority site on a particular piece of software and I was e-mailed instantly as soon as one website notified users of an update, meaning I could keep my users informed of the action.

I also use it to do research on a market before I decide to get into it. You can set it up to go to your Google reader to keep the clutter out of your email.

I use twilert to monitor conversations about my keyword on twitter as well.
