I'm currently in the process of finding good writers.
I've been getting a lot of messages offering me a free review article, the thing is what do I do with the articles?

Are the articles mine even if i decide to go with another writer for example?
Can I use them?

I've been thinking of paying for the articles that I like even if I've found a better writer. Feels kinda "evil" to use a free article.

Got any tips?

Thanks in advance.

I say no, use only those that you pay for. Nobody RESPECTS a thief, and you may find you lose some self respect. Not worth it to be your own enemy.

I look at it very differently from Aaron.

If authors are providing you with sample articles, they're surely expecting you to use them, to test them out?

Otherwise how are you going to know whether they pull any clicks and have a click-through rate worth talking about, if you put them in a directory or get them re-published on any niche sites in front of targeted traffic? They're surely not expecting you to be able to judge that just from reading the article?

I never did a free sample for anyone when I was writing articles for people, but if I had done, I'd certainly have intended it to be used and wouldn't have been surprised, or complained about that ... let alone regarded it as "theft".

These are articles that have been written for you, on your subject, with your keyword(s), aren't they?

I suppose it all ultimately depends on "what's been agreed". Why not just ask them, mentioning (perfectly legitimately) that that needs to be part of your "testing their work"?

I have a lot of trouble trusting writers that give away free articles. I always feel that the content will not pass copyscape and that it is not all that good. I have a couple of very good writers and when I tested them out to figure out if I wanted to use them I just ordered one article from them. Then, when I knew the quality was what I was looking for I ordered more.

This is how I run my writing business as well. I don't give away content because I don't have to. My advice is to dump the "free review articles" and only go with those that provide you quality and that you pay for.

It might also depend on your original agreement.

I write one review article for potential clients. If they like it, they can buy it at half the regular price. Or if they place a ten article order they get the first article free.

If it's not what they're looking for I retain the rights and they owe nothing. The writer should state what rights they're giving you with the article.

I never write articles on approval unless it is a long standing customer. If you are unsure about a new writer you are considering, most will allow you to order only one article. If you like the work, then consider ordering ten since the prices tend to be discounted. Or continue to order one at a time unless you establish a good relationship.

You should only deal with article writers which produce only unique content. When you purchase the article, you own it and can do with it what you may. The article writer gives up all rights to the article unless otherwise specified.

Hope this answers your questions and best of luck finding and working with a good article writer.

The challenge in the process is finding a writer or company that produces content that you are happy to put your name in the author's resource box.

I would expect that if anyone gave you a "free article", you should be able to use it as you see fit, but do check the fine print.

I can tell you from first hand experience that once you find the good writers, do whatever you need to do to be able to keep them. But be prepared for a long search, because I often go through 20 "writers" to find one worth having.

I used to give out 'free' sample articles that I had written especially for potential clients based on their keywords etc and fully expected them to do whatever they wanted with those articles.

Unfortunately the majority of time that was also the last that I heard from them (I am not the 'cheapest' writer on the block). Now I just have a link to one of my pen-name accounts on an article directory as a type of portfolio. If anyone wants to know about the style and quality of my writing they can see it for themselves. It's a win win.

Use original articles for your campaigns. You can get them only if someone wrote them for you specifically.

When I send sample articles, I send the same articles to everyone. I send samples to show clients my writing style. The sample is not intended to be a freebie for the potential client. The same sample article may have been sent to 100 different people.

You may want to check with your writer to make sure the sample was written just for you before using it.
