A very newbie question

My problem is that I can't figure out something very basic and I don't know where to look. Say I have the eBook and site. I want people to pay to download it. Free downloads from file hosts I have done before, but never paid downloads. Any advice on where to find an aswer? Thanks.

  • The simplest way is to upload the ebook to your server, you can use ftp software for this.

Upload it to the root folder, so it's location is yourdomain(dot)com/myebook(dot)pdf

Add a page to your site that say something like - thank you for purchasing my ebook name, click here to download it. For very basic protection design this as a graphic and upload it and link it to your ebook (google and other bots can't index the text on a graphic). Call the page something like yourdomain(dot)com/apf83pih2. A rubbish name is more difficult for drive by downloaders to find.

Then place a Paypal buy button on your site. In Paypal there is a place to enter the return web address once someone has paid. Enter the address of your download page.

As you get more experienced you might want to use download protection software or sell your ebook via a third party such as Clickbank or Paydotcom

    • Rosetrees gives some excellent suggestions.

I would add that e-junkie.com offers a reasonably priced system that requires very little techical knowledge - just upload your book and set up your paypal details.

You can then easily control the price, add affiliates add more products etc.

It costs next to nothing - $5 a month I think - and there are usually codes about to get 30-100 days free, which should be enough time to make money to pay that $5/month bill when it comes to you.

If you can spend the money I'd suggest a paid and hosted solution such as ejunkie over just uploading a file somewhere on your system. The money is well spent as you can set and forget and spend time on other areas of your business, not worrying about if the link is being shared or security issues.

NB eJunkie is a big well known company and I am not affiliated with them, but I have been their customer in the past.
  • While you can set up protected downloads yourself, there's a learning curve involved and potentially an outlay for software to do it for you.

My suggestion would be to use something like eJunkie or DigiResults as they take care of all the tricky stuff for you.
  • You could use e-junkie. Upload your ebook there and copy the link to your website. Payment and delivery is handled automatically.

    • A big thanks for the advice everyone. You solved my problem. Much appreciated.
  • I believe payloadz does the same thing as well. Also if you type it into youtube, I'm sure you'll find an answer there as well. That's what I did when I was trying to figure out how to sell my digital products online.
  • I haven't published any ebooks yet. But I have promoted ones that are handled through E-junkie and they certainly sell better than the Clickbank ones. They just seem to attract better quality products.

I was curious about this and did some Googling about E-junkie. They seem to get a lot of good reports from the people who do use it to sell products. So that's definitely one to go for, I think.
  • I just give my e-books away, plus any other good ones I find with redistribution or resale rights. Building a list and offering value, building trust is more important to me than trying to make a sale straight up.
  • use ejunkie. it is easy to use, need to pay for posting a file though.
