Is it possible to make money in a lower profile niche?

I posted a similar post on this once before, but it concerned the traffic to a particular blog. This one is slightly different.

There is so much advise about this niche or that niche--IM, pet care, and health/diet are supposedly the top three.

These are so overcrowded. Everyone is making sites in this niche. What if you wanted to make a niche in your passion? One that you love. It has thousands of products related to it and a lot of sales in affiliate marketing and physical products.

It has affiliate programs with Amazon, ebay, share-a-sale and commission junction.

It has movies made for this niche (no not the one I have been seeing lately--create a website based on some buffed up actor like Chris Henmenson (Thor) and advertise this until it runs out.

My interest in pop culture.
One of the blogs I love is Bat-Blog.
It has thousands of backlinks to it and it is incredible. He has news about stupid things like Batman themed wedding cakes, etc.

He has it monetized with Amazon ads for books, share a sale for T-Shirts, ebay and other properties.

Yes, it is not as high profile as IM, but if you go to
tomztoyz (dot) blogspot(dot)com you will find it there.

What do the rest of you think of a blog like this? Is a niche like this worth pursuing?

  • You can do it, but did you see this on the site? You have to be very careful about how you do it.

    You'll notice the name of the site does not say batman either.

    I wouldn't call this a low profile site by any means.

  • In part, I think you are confusing advice about going into these niches with using them as examples. Product creators use these examples a lot, and 'marketers' with little imagination jump on them. "If Joe Gooroo uses dog training as his teaching niche, it must be good..."

    Many who market to newbies aren't really recommending that the newbie jump into the MMO niche. They are recommending that the newbie plug the product they just bought. "After all, it's easy to sell - you bought it, didn't you?"

    What Joe Gooroo and his cronies usually don't tell you is that most of their money comes from lower profile niches, both within and totally unrelated to your big three.

    If you have the ability to build an audience that will buy things you recommend, it is definitely possible to make money in well-selected lower profile niches.
