I'd honestly have to say building your site. You have more control over structure, content, etc. Granted, it may take some time, but it's worth it. There are plenty of programs you can use (free and paid) that you can use: Microsoft Expressions, Wordpress, Dreamweaver, etc. And there are dozens and dozens of how to videos that you can find on you tube to show you how. Just a matter of what you feel compelled to do.

Targeted Traffic

Well if the website is an ESTABLISHED website, then definitely buying that would have more advantages compared to building a website.

You have to invest quite a lot of time and hard work in the initial stage of website growth. So if you are buying an established website then you are not going to put all that kind of effort. If the website is already getting good amount of traffic from search engines, it becomes a goldmine. Furthermore it has good amount of traffic, easier to monetize and you can make use of the existing customers.

If you have the money, buying is the best way to go. Then you need only maintain it. Building it yourself (and building up to a certain level of income) is a long hard road.

Even with newer sites, unless you can build one quickly, it makes sense to buy because then you can focus your efforts on promoting it and getting traffic. I mean why waste weeks building it yourself when you can buy one already made and then spend those weeks getting the traffic so it can start earning money?

I have been building sites/ doing IM for about 3-4 years now. In total I've made a few thousand dollars. Recently I bought an established ecommerce site and I made over $1000 last week. It was a big investment, but I should be recouped in little over a year. Definitely worth it.

But I will say this, the experience I gained building my own sites for a couple years is absolutely helping me with my new site.

How long it will take me to get traffic doesn't depend on whether I build it or buy it: that's a constant factor, either way.

How long it will take me to build a site is a relevant factor, of course. I have bought some ready-made ones (and the prices always seem terribly low, to me, for what they are), but I prefer to build them, really. I have more control that way, and am less dependent on other people. And if someone else builds the site for me with ready-made content, I'd have to replace most of the content anyway, for SEO reasons.

(There's also the fact that I don't really use Wordpress sites in my business - and that seems to be a popular way for people to buy readily editable sites).

Building? Why? Because then you know how and why the site makes money and its potential and limitations. When you buy, it can all go wrong the next day and then you're screwed

Building is definitely worth it in the long road, as previous posters have mentioned you have more control. But it's more than that, it's really all about risk reduction. If you invest $5,000 in purchasing a website which promises to earn $100 a day through adsense you'll be waiting a long time to recoup that investment. And since you never built the website to begin with you don't know the first thing about where it's potential problems may lie.

Yes at least learn how a site is put together, you can always move on from
there by buying ready made sites if you want to. There is always a trade off between time and money.

  Building a site can be a good learning experience, and it's the way to go if you are good at it and enjoy doing it.
  
  But if you're not good at it and hate building sites, then buy one if you can afford it. Or pay someone to build a site for you. There are many warriors who offer this service.

I have built many sites, but it's less time consuming to buy. If buying, make sure you buy a quality and functional site that you can edit entirely.

I have done both and like others said it all depends on the site your buying or planning to build. Some sites I built have sold for more than the ones I bought. If your going the turnkey way then sure build it out, but if your going the quick flip way then buy a site that is doing ok but really undervalue. Add some value to the site and list it. Not all site require the same things and some don't requires any attention at all. If you due your due dilligence in the beginning you'll be fine.

I've done lots of both - building is the best by far as you control the structure of the site which is critical to both SEO and conversion.

Most other sites are not built with the best, cleanest tools, are not well optimized and often take far longer to get looking like you want them to.

That said, buying aged domains can certainly be a good strategy - but better if you can build the site yourself.

I am surprised that most of the people here prefer building website, instead of buying (even if you could afford).

In my opinion, maybe after you have built couple of websites yourself, buying established website (with good traffic and revenue) is far better. This is the reason that lot of companies buy other companies (google just bought motorolla for 12+ billion).

I am developer myself and have built countless websites/softwares. Now that I am older and wiser and don't get that much pleasure in writing code, I think if I can find a good website which can provide me some passive income.

I would rather build a website. I enjoy doing it, and so I can save the cash that would otherwise be wasted. It's not like I don't know how to generate traffic and sales, so essentially buying one would take all the fun out of it for me!

Whether i will build a site depends a number of things like, how much such a site cost, how much it will take me to create such a site, the ranking and revenue of the site in question and few others.

Make your calculation and you will arrive at a decent conclusion.

If you've got the budget for it, buying is always better... you can never beat an established website with an aged domain + existing rankings + trust + traffic.

It's easier improve an existing site than to promote a new one from scratch...

That being said, be cautious when buying established websites, make sure you do your own due diligence beforehand. Check ownership, analytics (if available), page rank validity (if there's any page rank to be claimed), history (www.archive.org/web/web.php).

Most importantly, always check the seller's claimed sources of traffic. There are many scammers out there who use blackhat tactics to make their sites look more appealing. The last thing you want is to buy a site that claims to make $800 a month from adsense and has a great alexa ranking only to find out that most of the traffic comes from bot clicks and the adsense income was faked...

If you're not very good at building, I would either hire someone to do it or buy. I build them, but am not at all adverse to buying a profitable website. Saves a lot of time if it's already making money, even if I think it needs a bit of a redesign.

I am a developer, so my answer would be to build rather than buy. However, I have friends who are constantly frustrated when trying to build their sites and I spend hours on the phone or IMing them help instructions. So for them, buying would be their best option if they're serious about wanting a good site. I've build dozens upon dozens of sites and have also sold a few. Not on forums though. Only to brick and mortar companies in my local area. I would figure out what group you fall into. If you know how to build sites, optimize them and then monotize... go for it. If you're a little iffy about that, buying a site that is already set up might be your best option. Good luck!

I'm torn between build or buy myself. My plan of action is to build at least 1 site myself from the ground up so that I know the whole process. After that I'd probably buy. The reason is; know your strengths...and mine isn't web design. If you ARE good at designing and building websites, go for it. Buying will save you ALOT of time if you have the money to do so.
