My Advise to Those Who Are Struggling...

Hey Warriors,

I just wanted to get this out there as this mindset has played a big role in my success. (Im no Guru by any means but I am living the life full-time. AKA no J.O.B!)

Ok, so you're following a business model. It may be CPA, or List Building. Whatever it is, most people fail and here's the reason:

You aren't seeing fast enough results.

After a week or two of hard work you don't see an ounce of return. So what do you do?

You get attracted to the shiny WSO's and end up buying more systems.

The same thing happens more or less here, too.

Here's how to stop that.

Firstly, let me give you a scenario:

-------------------------------------------

You are the owner of an offline business in a high street. The shop isn't yet complete. In fact, you are doing the shop fitting yourself AND the stocking - the whole works. Your goal is $1000 per week from this outlet.

Who knows how long it'll take you. You'll have to work your butt off to make sure you can get the shop open so you can start making sales.

Sidenote: You know your goal is $1000 per week (or whatever you want it to be). You know what you need to do, you know what works (look at all the stores around you). You just need to take action and start fitting the shop.

At the end of week 1 you've worked, say, 40 hours. Have you made any sales? No! Because you haven't had any customers - obviously.

At the end of week 2 and 40 more hours later you still haven't made a dime.

At this point would you:

a) Give up and start a new store three doors up?
b) Carry on taking action because you know that persistence and consistent action will make sure you complete the shop so you can open for business AKA sales!

----------------------------------------------------
Of course you'll choose 'B' because you don't want to turn your back on 80 hours of work only to do it over and over for no return each time. Plus, you know darn well that one day that shop WILL make sales as soon as it's open.

So why are YOU choosing to walk away?

Ok, so I'm not saying you work 40 hours a week but what I AM trying to say is that you aren't giving your business enough time to prove itself.

You are giving something a week or two (sometimes not even that) then you are moving on because you aren't seeing results fast enough.

What you don't realise is that more often that not you are only closer than you think to success if you only give it a chance.

In my business I give an SEO campaign AT LEAST 6 WEEKS to prove itself.

I know successful people that give ANY new system AT LEAST 10 WEEKS to prove itself.

Guys, this isn't a rant. I'm trying to help you see the big picture.

If the guy above with the high street shop worked his butt off for 6 weeks on his shop he could have a 10k per month business there.

If the copped out after a fortnight he'd be dead in the water looking for the next shiny thing.

Just think about it and the next time you go to move on to the next, best WSO consider giving it a little time.

---------------------
Take Aways
---------------------

1) Find a System that is proven
2) Learn the System
3) Work the System for at least a month
4) Monitor results and scale accordingly
5) Rinse and Repeat

Give Success A Chance!

    Hi Russ,

I totally agree, I do believe that going for certain keywords can be very time consuming and it takes a while to build a business up from a scratch. Building the right reputation is the most time consuming activity and the more similar businesses around, the more difficult it will be to establish that.
I have been working on my website for about 4 weeks now, I have 7 products, but I am only really focusing on 1 as I would not be managing all the activities correctly yet (this is my first website). I am struggling myself in getting the content right. I have started considering getting my content written up by a professional service. Have you done it yourself ?

I am also starting doubting if my keyword is good enough to break through to the top.
I am between 1st and 5th in Bing and yahoo, but 500th in google so far.

What keyword research tool are you using? I am debating between Keyword Niche Finder and Market Samurai, what one would you recommend?

I have only been using article marketing though, I am going to start forum and blog commenting this week to improve diversity of my blogs.

      Hi, thanks for the reply.

I often get my content written from Warriors here in the For Hire section. You can get some great deals.

That leaves me time to do work on other areas of the site(s).

In my personal opinion you can rank for any keyword you want. Of course, I say that loosely because the more competitive a keyword, the longer it'll take as well as the work involved but it's no impossible.

To be honest with you I get better results targeting a lots (20+) of low searched keywords that are more targeted as opposed to a few large keywords that are more broad.

I've known of cases where companies spend 12 months trying to rank for a keyword that gets 15,000 searches a month only to make no money from it.

They went back to targeting handfuls of smaller keywords and were getting conversions.

I do recommend Market Samuari but it's not within everyone's budget.

As a tip try to spend a little time every day on keyword research to find easy ranking opportunites (less than 1000 searches per month) as you're likely to get traffic quicker. I know these keywords don't a great deal of traffic but each keyword will give you a little more visits each day and let me tell you it builds up - at least whilst your trying to rank for the bigger ones.

This is the building blocks of my SEO work:

      1) Post article on my site and index it (I use SocialMonkee - It's Free)

      2) Once indexed I then post that SAME article to as many article directories as I can, making sure I link back to ANOTHER post on my site.

      3) I then Spin the original article and submit to Blog Networks (Like BuildMyRank, ArticleRanks ETC) which will drip-feed the post to thousands of related blogs over time

      4) Occasional blog commenting used as a booster shot if needed.

If you need further advise please do PM.

      Hope That Helps,

      ~Russ

        Hi Russ,

I totally agree, you have posted a killer reply here that I am sure, others would benefit from.
To be completely honest with you guys, I am going both ways at the moment. I have just bought 4 domains that I am going to use with conjunction with my new niche I will be working on. However on these, I will be using adsense as well as autoblogging.

Searching and scrolling down the websites I have noticed that the right content is going to win every time so even a website with hundreds of backlinks cannot withstand the one with a regular content drip.

So far I have been spending most of my time organising my work as I really want to make 2011 the year when I start making money online.
I have found it really difficult resisting all the offers I get and slowly I am finishing off collecting all the information I need for particular techniques.

I am only now looking for a good free rss feed creator, have you got any ideas?

I like market samurai. but you don't even have to use it to find good keywords but give it a try sometimes you get a 40 day trial depending on who you sign up through.

I personally think its really easy to rank in google. The fastest I've ever gotten ranked though was page 2 in 48 hours for my main keyword. That is with buying an exact keyword domain name and adding relevant content with the same keywords or supporting keywords. It works but page 2 rarely gets visits.

Anyway, i would find a great low competition keyword and write a blog using that keyword then post it to that site your having a hard time ranking in. Remember to use the keyword in the title as well as bold the keyword a few times in the blog posting. Make it natural and full of valuable content and its sure to rank.

WoW! Killer advise. At the end, I thought there would be 'let me know you show....and for today only, I will selll this for $xx.' Nice post!! Thanks for it! Also, I agree. Why focus on 100 domains as opposed to 1 so-called super domain that could rank well and make lots of money of that instead of some dumb strategy with $10 here and there over 300+ domains. Just my thought as the multi domain strategy never worked for me!!

Something else that I've noticed people doing that takes away from their success is building a mini-site (5-10 pages or so), doing a few backlinks, and then going on and doing it again and again and again. As soon as they finish one site, they forget about it and start the second site. They're investing $10-$20 per week doing this (hosting, domains) and they'll probably never get anywhere.

Some of the best advice I've seen is also the most boring advice, which means most people won't do it.

Stop for 10 minutes and think about the highest traffic sites on the 'Net. Amazon, eBay, Craigs List, Wikipedia...what do they all have in common?

      TONS OF CONTENT

I'm a content writer for other people, and I make a decent bit of money at it, but I've noticed that people want far too little content. I'll have someone email an order to me for 5-10 pages, 1000 words each, and that'll be their entire site. That means they're trying to rank for 5-10 keywords. If you look at the OP here, he's saying go for lots of little keywords that are easy to rank for. That goes hand-in-hand with what I'm saying. Spend 3 hours today and find 50 semi-related keywords. For the next 2 months, spend 30-60 minutes each day writing 1x1000 word article for one of those keywords and post it to your site. Spend another hour or two backlinking it. Rinse, repeat.

Look up in 2 months and see what your traffic is like.

I bet you'll have enough coming in to hire someone else to write 30-50 more articles for your site (or for a second site at this point). Google loves to see natural growth, so adding 1 page/post per day will make Google trust your site a lot more than seeing 20 posts appear all in one day.

Maybe I am going out of topic here, but just wanted to mention one thing. I am sorry that muti-domain modeling never worked for you, but, in reality, it works provided you know what to do, when to do and how to do.

Also, most importantly, you must be a master of time management. Obviously, I am not talking about managing 300 domains here, that's probably impossible without outsourcing certain works. But, yes, around 10 sites, that's a probable number that can be maintained.

The main problem with 1 site model is everything depends on that single site. If it fails, your entire campaign fails, if it succeeds, your campaign is good to continue.

    Hi there,

I'm a total newbie and I must say I really enjoyed your post.
The description you wrote fits me exactly.
I just built my first website and I'm trying to promote with not much results (as of yet)
and I did start to feel a little disapointed... so you really cheered me up when you said to wait 6-10 weeks before determining if it works.
The thing is, that I have a problem with this part:
"1) Find a System that is proven"
I have read so many systems that its a bit confusing to know which one to use or how to use them together to be succesful.
I'm stuck now in the link building part and I'm not sure exactly how to continue.

the strategy you mentioned in a later post is enough for linkbuilding?

and one more newbie question - which spin software do you use?

    Thanks in advance

This is a fantastic post. Many marketers even give up when they are just millimeters away from finding success.

You just have to want it enough and keep your head down to stay focused. There are soooo many shiny objects in addition to WSOs that can deter marketers off their path.

There were so wonderful product launches in the past month. Heck, there ALWAYS are. It takes discipline to ignore them all

Great post. Reminds me of a time when I got frustrated with forex trading and I just stumbled upon a video by a senior member of the forum I belong to. He called it system hopping and it still describes exactly what you're talking about. Good Advice.

Take this seriously. It's a reality many people seek the online businesses due to capital restraints of offline businesses, but if your playing with pennies you'll make pennies.

Compared to other businesses, online business model has very low capital requirements and barriers to entry.

At the very least you need hosting and a domain name to get started! Work smart!

Russ, this is why in the past I have rarely been successful. If I did not get instant results, I quit and moved onto something else. Well no more. My business and book are very, very new and I am building on it and actually practicing patience and faith. Very hard for me but I know I must. I think the major problem most IMer's face is that they think of doing everything all at one time which causes frustration and eventually makes them want to quit. If anything they need to establish a proven system in their head where they are working 4-6 hours per day for 5 days a week. By the 7th week or so, that's when I think things would pick up and then they could start to slow down in there campaign since they'd probably start making money by the 7th or 8th week.

Some good discussion here. Here's my take.

      1. Choose only a few specific areas that you want to work on, to begin with. Don't build one site paer day. Build only a few sites but make them stronger and stronger, both in terms of content and SEO.

      2. If you were to spend your next dime, then spend it on only the best WSO unless you already have a WSO that's gathering dust. If you have even 3-4 WSOs gathering dust then decide that you have more than enough info.

      3. If you have more than enough info then it is time to act. Start taking action. Spend our next dime in selecting the next best KW to rank for in your existing monetizable site (assuming that you have a few already). Spend your next dime in creating content for your site. Spend the next dime on doing SEO (or PPC, or whatever tactic that gets you targeted traffic) for your site. If you need to spend, try to spend it more on a service than an information product - you are probably over-informed and need to start taking action rather than gathering more and more information.

      4. Copy your own success. If you have been selling to an extent, why not copy your own activities, rather than trying to learn some new activity by copying someone else's technique? Are you already done and exhausted with what you were already making some money with and can you not imagine a darn way to copy it? Remember, if you are making money with something then you are expert enough to make money with that something.

Invest, don't spend. That's the real mindset which will take you somewhere rather than nowhere.

Just thought I would share my personal experience, and what almost DIDN'T happen for me.

I started a website at the beginning of 2008, but soon gave up on it half way through the year. I told myself that the niche was saturated, the competition was too tough, there was not enough traffic to make the website profitable etc etc.

Half way through 2009 (by chance) Yahoo charged my credit card for £50 which immediately hit my active PPC account (which had not been running due to lack of funds), and as the campaign i had set up was "active" (but never used) Yahoo began displaying my ads...and my commissions began rolling in (£170)...

      FAST FORWARD>>

Having had this bit of luck, i put a lot of effort into the site (knowing that it could convert), and concentrated mainly on SEO...My site is now number 2 in Google & I have brokered some direct deals with my merchants.

I am now writing this from Thailand, having given up my full-time job 12 months ago, and my website is raking in £xx,xxx per month.

If i had just worked on the site from the beginning, this would have happened a lot sooner...and if Yahoo hadn't made that mistake it may have never happened!

I am now working on another bigger website, but this time I will not make the same mistake.

If you don't put in the work it will NEVER happen, If you DO it MIGHT!

RUSSELLS - Great advice, I could have done with you looking over my shoulder.

Excellent post - it taps in the very core of the problem.

Beginners always look for the 'method' or the 'system', a magic button of some sort
they would just push and it would spew out the money. When they see there is a
work involved and that it takes time, they quickly drop it and jump to the next thing.
In the worst case decide that you can't earn money online and give up altogether.

Great patience, endurance and investing energy, time and money is the way to go.

You are giving something a week or two (sometimes not even that) then you are moving on because you aren't seeing results fast enough.
Great post Russ. As a coach I see this in 95% of people... They want instant gratification, and if they don't get it, they will go from WSO to WSO (or Clickbank product) looking for it. People spend hundreds, if not thousands of dollars, accumulating WSO's and Clickbank products.

Most people never fully apply and persevere with any of the strategies they have read in these products, but they'll buy the next product... It's crazy!

I came from a brick and mortar business background of 15 years and I think the mindset is completely different because there is a big start-up cost. That cost is the big motivator to succeed, but also a lot of thought, research and planning has gone into the business.

Because an online business is so cheap and easy to start, that 'gun to the head' motivation is missing... and the motivation has to come from within, and that's where the problem lies.

I have had great success by getting people to choose one of the strategies they have learned about and then holding them accountable. Anyone can get great results by doing the same. Most of the strategies in the WSO's work, if you apply them fully and persevere...

And, if you are on anyone's list that is constantly sending you emails about the next latest and greatest WSO... UNSUBSCRIBE !!

Those marketers are in the game for themselves, not for you. Their bank balances are growing while yours is shrinking. You need to turn the tables.

    Cheers
    Ian McConnell

    Wow!

I'm absolutely taken away by the reponses here. I never thought this thread would get so many replies.

There's some awesome talk going on in here and I hope it's given many of you an 'AH-HA' moment.

I remember when I had that same 'AH HA' moment when everything clicked. I started practicing patience and persistence with a little faith thrown in and VOILA it started to happen.

I'm inspired by the success stories on here.

    Keep it coming, guys

Great advice here. Thank you, Russells and everyone else.

Ian, I think you are right about the low (or no) initial cost to start in this business sets up an unrealistic expectation. Often persistence has a direct correlation to investment.

Years ago, I worked as an advertising executive for the Washington Times. There were 65 account executives total. I was young and inexperienced and was placed in the worst territory they had. The most that territory had ever made was $50,000 a year in sales.

At first, I did like everybody else did and go after the big accounts thinking that all I needed was one big score and I'd have it made. But one month turned into two and then three and I hadn't made even one sale.

So, out of desperation (and to keep from starving!), I called on one of those little mom and pop shops. It was a little place with a very small, almost non-existent ad budget. But they bought.

And then, I called on another and another and another until I had accumulated in less than a year over one million dollars in ad sales off little mom and pop businesses that no one else wanted. In fact, very few ad execs would even call on them.

My grandfather once told me, "Take care of your pennies and the dollars will take care of themselves."

I always thought that saying applied to money, but I think it applies to much more than that. You see, by taking care of the little guy that pretty much all the other ad execs ignored or overlooked, I ended up taking care of everything else.

    Pennies ad up.

it so true what you said. i was caught up for a long time with buying the newest product and i wasted a lot of money. the important thing is to take action and keep pressing. i had to learn that lesson the hard way

      Great advice here, the scenario I work to is this;

All those affiliate products you bought that you're still trying to make money with, imagine them as cars. You start pushing one and it doesn't go very far so you start with another one, again it doesn't go very far so you move on to the next one, meanwhile your buddy (Mike) starts pushing a car while you move on to the next one and the next one. Soon (Mike) is out of site because he kept pushing the same car and found momentum. Moral: Don't push too many cars!!!

      All the best, Steve.

The guys that are willing to spend the 6-10 weeks following through with a plan are the guys you sahring their successes here.

It's all about the commitment :-)

I know it can be really frustrating as I've been there too. No money, wishing on a new system and turning your back too early.

As I said I always give my projects at least 6 weeks of consistent work to see if it's gaining traction. if it is I'll keep going but if nothing is happening I'll often move on if I can't see an obvious problem.

Great advice Russ, thanks for sharing so freely. I'm currently in that place where I've had the shop refitted and stocked and hung out my shingles but the sales are coming in trickles. It can get discouraging but I've decided to hang in there and tweak and tweak until I find the winning combination. Thanks for the motivation.

    Awesome post!

It is true that there are SO many options to make money online and off that you can end up jumping from one thing to another and not seeing any success. Stick with one thing until you see some measure of success and then access how much time it took.

If too much time then move on to something else and repeat.

You will get there in the end!

    Spot on advice!

This is the friendliest and most uplifting thread I have ever read.

Huge thanks to Russells for starting it in such a skillful and efficient manner. Posts by JaRyCu, Fred Jones and Furious Styles speak to me most. Thanks for such a valuable contribution!

If I were to add only one thing, we must not get too carried away. We must remember that the life won't start the day the big bucks begin rolling in. Our life is here and now, we have to enjoy also the days of struggle. Don't forget that little cup of coffee out in the garden or hanging out with friends now and then.

The road to success must be in its own way easy.

Great post and like the bricks and mortar business analogy.

Once you have a system to follow it takes time to understand how it actually works in the wild and how your personality and skills either limit or enhance it.

Once you understand this you can leave the ranks of those that chant 'system x does not work', all systems work for at least one person, their creator, but maybe you are the reason that you are struggling, I know I am.

I have a habit of going balls out into a project that I know would be successful if I were to just focus on it, and end up with project ADD and end up hopping to something else. One of my goals for 2012 is to focus on one big thing at a time and push it until it's finished/see some results.
