2 Years And Still Not Making It

I have tried a number of different methods over the last 2 years but can't really get anything close to making a full time income...or anything that seems to work that great for me.

I know I have bounced around to different ideas too quicly but I do throw myself into the methods and give them an effort

I have tried:

Sniper sites...they ranked well bit did not convert very well...I had about 10 sites and made about 2 or 3 sales per month

Google News...My news articles ranked well but it took all day to write 5 or 6 news articles...made about $20 per day...missed a few days of writing and lost my Google news status

Tried building Adsense sites for the last couple months but can't really get ranking with the thin sites

I have tried a few of the CPA methods out there as well but lost motivation with the tricky ways

My greatest success was building videos for a dating offer...was probably making about $200 per month but all my accounts were eventually suspended

Just looking for a little advice...I want to start over

What can I do to build a solid long term business online?

It is obvious.....MJ Demarco says you have to be monogamous in business. Your running around with every floozy and this is why you're being treated like crap.

    Exhale

make a commitment to one plan.

    See you at the top.

Google News...My news articles ranked well but it took all day to write 5 or 6 news articles...made about $20 per day...missed a few days of writing and lost my Google news status Google News is a lot of work and you have to be totally committed to it. It would take more than just a few days to lose your status, however. Either something was wrong with the site or you stopped working it for longer than you should have.

Tried building Adsense sites for the last couple months but can't really get ranking with the thin sites Then why are you building "thin" sites?

I have tried a few of the CPA methods out there as well but lost motivation with the tricky ways A lot of CPA offers and CPA methods are deceptive but not all - all you have to do is find some offers you can promote with a clear conscience.

My greatest success was building videos for a dating offer...was probably making about $200 per month but all my accounts were eventually suspended Why were your accounts suspended?

What can I do to build a solid long term business online? Concentrate on the words "solid long term business". Online or offline, the principles are the same.
It sounds like you're not sticking to anything or putting enough actual work into it to build a real business. It takes a lot of sustained effort and usually quite a bit of time to establish a business that will last.

Stop focusing on the latest gimmick for quick money and get back to basics. The evergreen principles of business and marketing will ALWAYS work.

Start with an offer (any product/service) and figure out how to get that offer in front of the people who need/want it (market).

First, I want to commend you for trying this business out! But you know what? You've answered your own questions already:

    1. "I know I have bounced around to different ideas too quicly..."

Don't do this. You know it's wrong to bounce around to different ideas too quickly without giving your original idea(s) time to payoff!

    2. "Sniper sites...they ranked well bit did not convert very well...I had about 10 sites and made about 2 or 3 sales per month."

You made "2 or 3 sales per month." Isn't that something to build off of? Oh yeah, refer back to #1: "...I have bounced around to different ideas too quicly..." You gave up on this too early. It was making SOMETHING, but because it wasn't "enough" you moved on and trashed all your hard work.

    3. "Google News...My news articles ranked well but it took all day to write 5 or 6 news articles...made about $20 per day...missed a few days of writing and lost my Google news status."

Twenty-dollars per day? That's $600 per month. And you walked away from it? "...missed a few days of writing and lost my Google news status."

I know you're going to come back with some kind of excuse as to why you "missed" a few days and "lost" your news status -- but the bottom line here is, you gave up $20 per day on this, "2 or 3 sales" per month on the sniper sites and...

    4. "Tried building Adsense sites for the last couple months but can't really get ranking with the thin sites."

"Can't get ranking with the thin sites." Then why settle at keeping them them "thin"? Why haven't you worked this more? It didn't work so you moved on to yet something else:

    5. "I have tried a few of the CPA methods out there as well but lost motivation with the tricky ways."

You "lost" motivation. *sigh* ...But wait, there's more:

    6. "My greatest success was building videos for a dating offer...was probably making about $200 per month but all my accounts were eventually suspended."

Your "greatest success" was making $200 per month building videos "for a dating offer" (personally I think the $20 PER DAY with the Google News thing was your "greatest success" but I digress) and then you got "eventually suspended."

Now you're looking to "start over" and are looking for some advice?

Do you see the pattern here? It's not what you're doing it's your MINDSET.

You don't see results fast enough, you walk away.

You start something new. When you do see results, you get lazy and in effect "walk away". Google News was making you some money, but you "missed" a few days and lost the status. Tried Adsense, but it was too much work to turn "thin" sites into high quality content sites so that they would rank well.

Then there's the "I'm a victim" mentality that you're showing (whether you know it or not): You were making $200 per month but "eventually got suspended". Wasn't your fault you got suspended, money would still be coming it if it weren't for "the dog and you meddling kids!" (Ummm..."Scooby-Doo" reference for all those wondering...)

You've tried all these different things, so actually being curious, taking initial action and starting a project is NOT your problem. You know enough about IM to get started -- heck you've made more money (and thrown more away apparently) than many newbies can hope to.

    Your problem:

    • COMMITMENT
    • FOLLOW THRU
    • FOCUS
    • HARD WORK
That's right, the problem is upstairs (point to your head with index finger).

Deal with that, and I bet you make $1,000 or more within two months of working hard and staying committed. After that, sky's the limit with what you can build off of that!

I want you to do one thing first (assuming you are serious about moving forward).

Well, two things actually: Learn and grow.

I will share a little about my (so far) small success over the last couple months and what I've done differently. (I don't do the list thing yet)

Started with the adsense thing, wrote good articles, didn't understand SEO beyond the basics : Site's flopped (account just now hit 100 bucks after ~1.5 years).

Tried physical sales (Amazon) after learning a little more SEO : Picked up some things. Make ~35/month with just the one site (don't really enjoy doing it)

My domain/hosting/website reseller business earns a clean ~50/month.

Doing digital product sales (clickbank) after l have brushed up on learning more SEO and makes ~ 100/month

Scored an offline contact who needed some SEO work done (they heard I "played" with that sort of thing from a friend). Proposed a contract and earning $650/month for 1 client, 1 site, very low key (and in 2 months I have scored him Page 1 for his 2-word phrase (2 of 'em) and Page-5 for the 1 word "stretch" goal. This represents roughly 10 hours of work this month. (20 last month). (I'll outsource the work once I'm in "maintenance" mode to make it scale-able and free up time for my next client, already in the works)

Realized I can "do" SEO because the "other" company he hired LOST HIM RANK (We're working 2 separate sites as comparison).

Applying my method to my previously-thought-to-be failure sites and watching traffic grow steady (large search volume financial KW's and I am moving up quick).

Now, I learned through the entire process, ALL while working a full time job, going to school full time, nailed a promotion at work and passively hitting about an extra 1k this month.

The majority of the self-earned pocket money IS the SEO client, because I found my PASSION: HELPING OTHERS do what they either 1) Can't or won't do -or- 2) Hired someone else that is FAILING at it. I have another client in the works in the same boat, because I took care of him and LOVE the enthusiasm we both share for beating the competition.

LEARN from where you've been, FIND something you're passionate about, STICK with it. Diversifying is optional (I can't give up my other sites either ) Where I changed exactly is my attitude: I came into a desire to make money online because of laziness: it's anything BUT, when you're first starting out you really gotta work hard (I do work my butt off). But it's building and growing, and I'm happier with each month's progress than the one before. If you're not willing to work harder at it than anything you've ever done, then you should leave. I don't encourage anybody to just simply give up, but your heart has to be in it, not just that lumpy wallet cushioning your buttocks while you're sittin' on your rear. Gotta be for the right reasons and with the right effort.

    What's your motivation?

Hey look you actually made sales and had the right point to start off from.

      I mean...

You had a product that converts...

Which means, there was a (hopefully decent) product in existence...

And there was a sales page ready for it (assuming that you were an affiliate)...

And there were buyers (targeted traffic) who were buying in spite of content that probably didn't even answer what they were looking for...

Don't you think you had hit the jackpot?

I mean, if you had tuned your content that was already ranking to make it high-quality, and were focusing more onto getting more targeted traffic, don't you think you would sell MORE?

I think, much more... Probably enough to give you a full time earning...

And that was just one method. You don't have to stick to this, but do stick to something. You are not out to prove or disprove that something works or it doesn't, you are out to make money and a kingly living. Work for what you want.

Well, you know how to make money online it seems the problem is making enough money. The problem could be one of time rather than effort.

The approach you are taking now probably means that you've hit a plateau - that is: if you keep on doing what you're doing, you'll keep on earning what you're earning.

The best advice I can give you is to sit down and work out how you can speed up production.

    • Not only speed up the process of getting the necessary work done, but
    • Speed up the process of making your sites more profitable

The solution will be some kind of outsourcing or joint venture. Alternatively, it will be trimming away time-consuming and low profit projects and replacing them with projects that can be built up quickly.

I suggest that you learn from your mistakes. I've been into Internet marketing for three years and I must say that my earnings are still not enough to make a living. But I continually put a lot of effort to achieve success. You have to stick to one website and concentrate all your resources there.

The key is to stick with one thing. How much are you looking to make a month? I think you should stick with one thing but also build Adsense sites on the side. I sell software for my main income and have my collection of Adsense sites on autopilot and make a couple grand a month doing nothing but a little SEO here and there. I have a new product coming out about Adsense (guide, videos, even a service) and if you email me I'll give you it to you for free... just cause I feel your pain i've been there. Anyways pick something and stick with it. Do Adsense on the side.

I'm going to reply while trying not to just repeat was has been said 100 times before me. You already know what the problems are so instead I will attempt to give you some focus for going forward, and point out one problem I don't think has been mentioned.

You appear to be doubtful that the sites you are creating actually have potential to make profit. This can be a huge factor in your motivation. I could not work on something so hard, without fully believing that when I make it, I make it big. Sometimes you just have to swim with the sharks, and you obviously have the experience & commitment to do this.

Why not choose a niche that you know is profitable (I wont give any suggestions as this will depend on you personally). By promoting a product that you know will make you money with enough work, you will not have any lingering doubts that your chosen niche may turn out to be a dead duck. This offers you the ability to:

      1. Focus on 1 website only. Creating a perfect website, with great content that is helpful to the users. Consider a financial comparison, or other high end product with good traffic & commissions.

      How can I compete?

I compete in a finance niche, and I do so very well. I also have a partner, so we have two full time SEO's promoting the one loans product - not even banks have this. How can they compete with us?.

      2. Choose a niche that is direct to sale. People arriving on your site already looking for the product. Not browsers that you hope will click on your ads, but people looking to buy, or apply using the information on your website.

You are now swimming with the sharks, but that is where the food is.

Obviously many people on this forum will disagree with me wholeheartedly, and i respect their opinion, but i do believe they are wrong. Attention span is everything, and as soon as you put your heart into something that matters (and will change your life, not make a couple hundred dollars) you have a goal - and a real business!

I hope you take my advice, but also hope that you are in this for the long-term, this type of strategy is not fast, but when you get there you arrive not with a bronze but with a GOLD. It may take you another two years, but at least you know that with enough dedication you will get there, and when you do it will pay its dividends.

You asked for a solid business!

I am not the almighty Affiliate Marketer, and I am certainly not meaning to speak down to you or anyone else on this forum, I have simply found a method that works for me and have shared it - Hopefully it can also work for you (or anyone else that reads this)!

I'll have to agree with what most other people have said.
Sounds like you didn't stick with something for long enough and that you didn't work hard enough to capitalize on the success you had.
I almost fell off my chair when you said you were making $20/day with that Google news website of yours and you let that go!!
You do realize that what then was $20/day could have become $200/day or more with enough work, effort and dedication!!
The good news is that you have potential and that if you see things seriously enough you can have very good results.

The general rule of thumb is: in the beginning you try and test different things to see what works best (but while on the same project - it's not worth jumping from project to project, as your previous work goes to waste and you constantly start over from scratch). Once you find out what works and you see some results (which you did see on more than one occasions) you stick with the method that brought you the success and try to do more of it, consistently, on an ongoing basis, even if that becomes repetitive. Doing that should hopefully attract increasingly many visitors to your website over time which normally equals more conversions. Once you have achieved a more-or-less steady upwards progress you can look into new projects or ways to expand the existing project.

As for reaching a full time income: if you stick with something that works and you put the effort into it, your revenues will definitely grow a lot. But it will take time until you can make a full-time income from it. Be patient, give your website time, and set realistic goals! Don't expect to make thousands in just a few weeks or even a few months. It will likely be a lengthier process, closer to a year or two of dedicated work.

'You are your own worst enemy' - I don't remember who said it, but it couldn't be more true!

    Best of luck!

      Great advice to the OP!

And WHO did say "You are your own worst enemy"?

      Actually nobody.

Around 50 B.C. Cicero said something along the lines of, "Man is his own worst enemy." Through the years the phrase just morphed into different things!

Maybe you made it as a hobby?
If you don't treat your IM as a real business is pretty sure you will never reach a consistent online income.

But maybe the problem here is that you change your idea quickly (that was even a problem of mine). Agree with the other posts.

Just go with one thing and only after you success with it, try another method and eventually outsource it if you have money.

I feel your pain! It was a slow start for me as well. But, my advice would be to figure out just 1 technique or plan that is working for others and do NOTHING but focus on that!

It sounds like you kept trying one thing and not really going all the way with it. IM'ing is a full time job, you just don't earn that full-time paycheck right away. Regardless of the delayed earnings, you still have to treat it like a 9 to 5. Stick to one goal and do anything to attain it!

When I started having that mindset, I started succeeding. Good luck!

You are not making money because you are not creating value.

When you base your "business" on Adsense, CPA offers etc. you're essentially taking a gamble. If you're lucky you'll make a bit of cash, otherwise...

Those methods are good for supplementing your income - in the long term though, these models are too unreliable. So it's not smart to make them your main source of money, in business.

Simply put, nobody really wants what you have - you're kind of hoping they click, or they sign up. Your Google News site probably wasn't that great, so the only links you had were the ones you created.

    However...

On the other hand, if you offer something that's valuable, something you can be proud of, so many doors open to you.

You can do joint ventures, speaking events, advertise, and so many other things. You can scale things up and multiply your income. As long as you start with a hungry market, and you can feed them with great stuff, you're going to find success.

What this could mean for you...

So this may be your time to re-evaluate your life - and start doing the GREAT things YOU are destined to do.

$20 a day with Google news is nice but writing 6 articles for it everyday means you get paid not even $4 per article. So, that's probably not worth your time, and Google news articles won't stick around for passive income most likely, so i understand him.

Exactly right Congrats...I was trying to establish a more "Set it and forget" type income and Google news was more of a daily routine that was too time consuming...Also the outsourcing route with google news would not guarantee a profit at the end of the day...Still I wish I had that site still as I should have investigated different ways of using it to make money.

Thanks for the replies everybody...good advice and probably time for a gut check on my part...I need to focus better I know that but now I seem to be in that info overload stage where I can't choose what to focus on.

I might look into a traing course that tells me step by step what to do...that might give me the opportunity to use what I have learned

Ah so what you are looking for is a way of making money online that does not involve any hard work.....you should have said, I'm sure there is an E-book on Clickbank that promises that!

Yes you have...I was making $20 per day with Google News...But it took about 1 hour to write a news story with the quality they expected...I was putting in 5 hours everyday for $20 per day with no recurring income potential

I am not affraid of working hard as I currently run an offline business as well...I am just trying to establish an online recurring income

FYI...That signature just appeared through using Sick Marketing for promotion of other sites...I am not an actor nor do I live in California...I am removing it from there ASAP

Don't give up yet. Just need to re-strategize and stay FOCUS.

Why don't you just jump straight to the top of IM?

    How?

Become an info product owner and get affiliates to make you money.

I have not gone full time at least not yet but I know I am on the way there. Look around here at WF.

Most big timers are product owners. 99percent of these big earners are product owners.

By becoming a product creator, you will be able to have your own buyers list
and you will automatically become an affiliate marketer.

But start by creating your own info product first!

    Good luck

Sorry if I bypass some posts before me but I just bumped into this one.

Well, if you are working 2 years and still not making it, then maybe 2 years is not enough for your situation, Or perhaps you are not in the right direction. Or maybe you make a crucial decision before and brought to your place now.

What would happen if you didn't have a choice? You already have the skills and understanding to at least make SOME money online. Your problem is true desire and motivation to make what you really want to happen... HAPPEN!!

I bet if you went back with an attitude that failure was not an option then you would succeed. And I mean really not an option. Act as if making money online is THE ONLY WAY to make money. If you don't, then you don't eat. If a lion on the Savannah doesn't hunt and make a kill it doesn't eat. The lion doesn't stroll back to her den after a failed hunt and say, "oh well, that didn't work, maybe I'll just give up hunting. It's too hard and and I'm not catching enough animals."

Lots of great info here. Some stuff that everyone could use, not just the OP ...

One thing happened to me, and it may to you as well ... reading WF sparked an idea, which triggered another idea, and like flashbulbs they were going off about how to start from scratch ... work at one thing was the main theme though, as others have said ... right now I'm working on my one thing ... trump44,

Man... in my opinion you are sitting on a goldmine and don't even know it. I hate to use a cliche but it denfinitely applies here.

"If you help enough people get what they want, you will get what you want."

In your 2 years of IM experiences, you gained a lot of KNOWLEGE, and ACTIONABLE SKILLS.

There are Hundreds - Thousands of people out there on the Net that could use your help. just look around inside the Warrior Forum alone. (With New Eyes)

You have been INWARDLY FOCUSED to long. It may be time for you to place your talents and energies OUTWARDLY FOCUSED.

Example: There a lot of people who don't know how to build websites, there a lot people who don't know how to make videos. Do you have a list? If you do, there are lot people on this very forum that would love to know exactly how you achieved that minor miracle. There are a lot of people who don't know how to install scripts, or build and send traffic or run Ad campaigns etc...

All the sfuff that you take for granted, gives other people upset stomachs and frustrations. It might be time for you to start creating your own informational products, services and solutions to help the needs others.

I'm not talking about How To Make $30,000 on Clickbank or Facebook's next big thing. Although there a lot of people who have trouble with Facebook as well. I'm talking about real "Here's How To Do It." VALUE. People pay for this type of information too. AND THEY BIG TIME.

You know trump44, It's kind of strange. When people know... I mean really feel that you are sincerely looking out for their best, they will happily pay you for as long as you want.

I know that this kind of sounds like some mystical mind mumble jumble, but there are others right now in this very thread who are shaking their heads in aggreement.

Anyhoo, just wanted to give you another angle that you might not have seriously considered.

There's loads of good advice in this thread and one factor that's been mentioned is not maintaining focus. The problem can be all the distracting offers and developments in areas you should be ignoring.

If you have a problem focussing on one thing here's something I have found to have worked for me. Despite knowing I should be focussing I was reluctant to unsubscribe from internet marketers' lists for fear of missing out on something. Once I identified what I wanted to concentrate on I set up a gmail account, subscribed to all the marketers who were sending me messages about areas I should not be focussing on and then unsubscribed from them in Outlook.

This stops you seeing their messages every day, yet also means they are accessible, so you don't have to feel you're missing out. Now I hardly look in the gmail account and am not concerned that it contains literally tens of thousands of messages that are likely to be irrelevant to what I'm working on.

I've done something similar with the login details for the blogs and Twitter accounts I used to keep going. I transferred all the login details to googledocs as a way to set up a barrier between myself and them.

I really wasted 2010 by trying to spread myself too thin. Now I'm just a couple of months from a product launch and one of the main reasons for the difference is what I've outlined here.

      Hope this helps.

You've had success. If I were you, I'd choose 1 to 3 of the sniper sites in the niches you like the most and ramp them up big time. Broaden the topics and articles in related areas. Totally and comprehensively cover the niche.

Scout out other great offers. Buy the products if you can and write the best reviews on the Web plus many articles driving traffic to those reviews. Build the site up big time. Don't always be selling, but always be linking to pages on your site that does sell.

Start building a list on those chosen sites.

Shoot for writing 1 awesome article per day per site if you have the time. Then promote the site(s) a little each day.

Your story was exactly like mine. I had way too many projects. I did the sniper thing, and it was good because it got me looking into a variety of niches. I chose 2 I liked and that produced a few sales and built them up to where they each earn well into 4 figures each month all with affiliate promotions.

Get laser focused on building the best site in your niche on the web. Don't forget to go after keywords in every article you publish. Always be building traffic. It's possible, just stick to it and build, build, build traffic!

I think nearly everything that needs to be said has already been said in this great thread but I really wanted to tell you to look at the positive side of what you talked about which is that you have experienced actually making "money" online.

So many people have tried and failed at even making that first dollar so you really have a head start in actually 'believing' the power of online marketing. Less doubts should lead to more action and the best advice you can take from the posts above is to actually take a method and spend time with it, actually scale up your operations rather than losing heart and then moving on to the next 'make money' scheme. Also as noted above you have so many skills that have built up over the 2 year period that you have a base from which to help/teach others and perhaps offer services for instance article writing/seo/website building that could really help and provide you with a regular income. Best of luck for the future!

Given the types of things you have already tried, I think you already know a long-term plan to use. :-) However, I think I may have also identified your problem (s): writing and possibly page layout or the products you are choosing to promote. If you promote quality products, I would focus on the first two. If you use a template that has been proven to convert, I would focus on your writing,

When I started writing, I had problems with my conversions, too. If wasn't because I wasn't a good writer. It was because I wrote all of my reviews like essays like they teach you to do in school. I eventually learned that people on the web or lazy and that I had to deliver all the necessary info but be brief. Once I learned to do that, I conversions increased almost immediately.

Virtually every legit method used to make money online requires some writing, but assuming you don't have the money to outsource, your reviews should be between 400 and 450 words. Make sure you answer all the questions the potential customer might have and use sub headings. Also, write using a relaxed style -- like you are talking to a friend.

    Good luck,
    Joey

Actually I have decided on both...I am going to resurect my news site and start product creation.

Looking into Tristan's training and a couple other offers for product based training...maybe that will help

With Google News I am going to look at other ways of monitizing that might make it more worth while

One other thing I attempted in the past was purchasing an article directory off Flippa...I thought it would be a good way to get emails of marketers...but the site kept getting my hosting account suspended so I just scrapped that idea

It took me almost 3 years to finally start making a full-time living online.

After I started making a full-time living I was able to figure out what worked and what did not work. I was able to start moving much faster and with much more success.

So, in the end it was a system that took me to success. I found a successful system and focused solely on that system until it became profitable. After it became profitable I just repeated that system until it became profitable, after that I repeated the system and so on and so forth.

Once you have a system that works it is easy to make money online.

That problem I see in what you're doing is you are jumping from one thing to the next. You are not sticking with one system.

You need to find a system and stick with that system until it becomes profitable.

Put on blinders and just go 100% in one direction. You need to take focused action each and every day on that system.

Once you do that you will start finding success.

    Talk soon,
