How do I create a members only site on Wordpress?

I have a standard wordpress blog but I want to create a section just for members who subscribe. Does anybody know how to do that?

Thank you.

You can use S2Member if you want a membership site. It's free

    Happy to help

You can do membership scripts, like DAP, but I dont think that is what you mean.

I am pretty sure there is a way to do this, simply, but I wouldnt know of it. I have only ever had purely open content, or restricted members areas.

    Hi Di,
If you want to have a members only section, you might be better off with a second install of WordPress in a subdirectory or subdomain. Then you could use the very handy members only plugin!

DAP is also good, but it's not free. It's around $150. S2Member should already do it. DAP is for more structured membership sites. I suggest you tried S2Member first, then just decide later if you want a premium plugin like DAP, Magic Members, Wishlist Member, etc.

If you mean blogs on wordpress.COM - that's not your site. It is theirs... and be very careful about commercialization/monetization of it. They will delete it in a minute. Read their TOS before doing anything. (Sadly, people never read TOS and are surprised when things happen...)

      Wordpress.COM is for hobby bloggers.
You cannot install themes or plugins - you just use what they installed for you.

Thank you Istvan. It is one of theirs. Just do not have the money to get one of my own yet. Story of my life at the moment.

        Thanks anyway for the advice.

I will have to strongly disagree with you on that one.

          1. In your sig you have a link to an empty (=useless) site/domain saying "Under construction". You should never ever link to such an unfinished site!

          2. What stops you from setting up WP in 5 minutes on that site's root or in a subfolder (/blog/)?
          - download the free WP script from wordpress.ORG
          - install it on your domain where you have that nonsense under construction...
          - export all your content from that wp.com site
          - import the content to your OWN WordPress installation

Okay!! (Rubbing my sore knuckles after that rapping)

Thank you for that. I did not know I could do that. Going to get it done now.

            Thanks again
            Di

P.S. Useless link removed for now

I use the "members" plug-in by Justin Tadlock on one of my sites. If you aren't intending to have paid members this will do the job.

It's a while since I set it up and someone here helped me to make it do what I wanted (which was to restrict members so that they can only edit their own page).

It should be easier for what you want. Once you activate the plug-in it adds a set of tickboxes in the editing area for each post/page which allows you to define that only users with a defined role can read the content when they are signed in.

Then go to settings/general and set the new user "default" role. Probably "contributor" would do the job and might mean you wouldn't have to set up a new role in the plug-in (which is what I had to do).

If you want to run a membership site, WordPress can handle the whole thing for you, when combined with a membership plugin – in this post I will be taking a look at the different options.

Hi, I actually wrote a post called How To Make Money Off A Popular Post that highlighted a site that offers such a service. It's free to join and also has an affiliate program so you can offer it to others.

That post links to another post where you can see it in action. At least that way you will get a better idea of whether or not its what you're looking for.
