I'm assuming that you're referring to doing business by phone! Here's the one and only resource that you need to study and learn from. Once you've perfected the scripting that works best for your particular business, use it to train select people whether in house or through careful outsourcing and/or contract methods.

Art Sobczak is one of the best in the business and might have a few other ideas for you...

I hire telephone sales people from local newspaper ads. Telephone sales people are ALWAYS looking for a new job, LOL. I have some great telephone sales reps that I hired just from newspaper ads, and then they bring over their co-workers. They're mostly from the cable TV industry, office supply, tools, and advertising. I pay a very good base salary plus commission to attract and keep the best ones. I have no problem firing them if they don't produce within 90 days probation. Once you have a few "insiders" from other businesses, word spreads fast, and I am getting good applicants from referrals also quite regularly.

    Hey Alex,

I used to run TWO Marketing Divisions with over 1,000 telemarketers working for me. It is VERY hard to find a GOOD one. About ONE out of every 500 is a PROFESSIONAL.

RULE number ONE - ONLY pay a Commission. If they SUCK they don't cost you a DIME. If they are GOOD, you BOTH make a TON of CASH.

Run ad's on Craigslist for FREE... I always get a ton of responses from ads here and you can get people from all over the WORLD.

    Good Luck

The best bet to hire a tele caller is to go the outsourcing way. There are many outsourcing companies in developing countries that have reasonable fluency in English and they do a reasonable job.
The only thing you must take care is to make it crystal clear as to how you are going to pay them and which people to target...

    Alex,

Art Sobczak is a good resource to learn how to sell on the phone, but I'm assuming you asked because you don't want to be the one on the phone. Roger is right. I've been in telesales for many years & have run TM rooms. Star salespeople are hard to find. Run an ad asking for "Top Closers Only!" If you let folks know that it's straight commission in your ad (even if you plan on paying a base), you'll only get salespeople who know they can make money without having to rely on an hourly wage. If you don't specify that, you'll get people coming to you just for the hourly. And we're seeing it more & more due to the economy. And yes, top sales people know other top sales people who they will bring with them if the money to be made is worth it.

    Look for the broke ones

In my experiences prior to IM, the best sales people that I ever hired whether for phone sales or face to face were all broke as could be.

  • Gee are starting a coaching back-end sales floor?

Here is a hint: You need to pay a base wage until you get established.

Here is the second hint, and one you won't want to hear:

No smart salesman will work in this industry. You can find some good ones no doubt, but any salesperson that calls "phone sales" their true profession will want to work in this market.

If you are working with Thrive or 99% of any of the other coaching and fulfillment houses, these coaching programs destroy many more careers and finances (families) than they ever help.

That's why most good salesmen won't get involved.

Although you could be doing something completely different, but posts like these come and go all the time.

      Christopher,

Did I miss something? There's no mention of any industry in the OP or in any of his replies.

The best way is to have a classified ads and hold interviews. But, first why don't you hold a telephone interview. Then straight away you will know if they have what it takes. I hope that helps.

Also, in order to entice staff, just like Imran Naseem said, you should really highlight the benefits and how much they can earn in your ad. Salesman are definitely motivated by money.

Good telemarketers are NEVER for hire!

What you need to do is recruit a mediochre one or two and train them in your product, your method of presentation and handling the objections that your product will get (as well as all the standard objections).

Be prepared to be on a constant recruiting drive because, as you train people, they will discover other, better jobs to go to or discover that they do not have the resillience necessary to accept the high volume of 'No's.

A good starting point if you have never done this type of marketing before is to use 'qualifiers' to provide good leads for your 'closers'. Qualifiers don't cost as much as closers but are seldom ready to accept a commission only situation. A good qualifier can help you to retain good closers and make your operation far more profitable.

If you are buying leads for your telemarketers to call, make sure that they have been filtered for 'no call' services like telepreference in UK.

Incidentally, a really good way of putting off a half way decent telemarketer is to 'blag' him. You do not need a telemarketer to follow up on 'web orders' - you need them to close 'web enquiries' (an order is a request for goods with a confirmed intention to buy). A small point but vital if you want to create credibility from the get go.

Finally, often the very best telemarketers are those who have never done it before. They do not bring a whole stack of baggage from their previous position and so, do not change your presentation.

I have been a telemarketer and trainer for over twenty years during which time I have seen the market place become a mine field of petty regulations (particularly where you are asking for money over the telephone) so you also need to seek professional advice to ensure that the telemarketers that you do employ understand exactly who they represent and the penalties for miss representing your product in any way. Since you are looking at selling a high ticket item, it is vital that the telemarketers are 100% accurate when answering questions about your 'returns' proceedures, any guarantees and any financing you might be considering.
