Free Member Sites / Services?

I was asked recently about free social sites, like Ning, that could be used as a free member site... and the only one I could think of was Ning, but I haven't used them in a long time, and couldn't immediately vouch for them.

So my question is, are there any free member / social media type sites that could act as a resource for members to join and have access to discussions and protected material?
