We HAVE SPAMMERS AMONG US

its really surprising that this could be from here. do you see the email id in my sig? i have never displayed it elsewhere apart from this forum and i am get newsletters from a list that i never subscribed to. the first time i noticed this, i unsubscribe but the owner redid it. i am glad that the email is for a separate use and its not actual email . watchout people.

    lol...

I guess no one ever told you that you should never display your email anywhere on the internet where it can be read by bots that scrape the web to add you to spam lists.

Time to change your sig ;-)

    Spammers or not...

You should really change your sig. It's not doing you any favors nor is it an effective way of building credibility.

That doesn't mean there is a spammer here. Spammers often collect email addresses by scanning web pages for email. Your email address is now on over 200 pages on this site - plus probably sites scraping the forum for content.

Anyway, if you post your email address in a sig don't you want someone to notice and send you email?

Your email address is wide open for the world to see. You should probably change your sig. Though your address has probably already been scraped and dumped into a spam DB.

The spam you'll be receiving has just begun. Spammers have bots scouring the Internet looking for email addresses. That "mailto:" is an open invention to spammers. And your email address is now indexed in over 100 pages by google alone.

I would dump that email address and start with another and don't link it in public forums, websites, etc.

in The case of forum sigs it 's not much help but on your website for instance the "contact us" page you need to us a server side email script else you are wide open to spammers and in some cases hackers. using a server side script removes that vulnerability.

This is a great idea to avoid some spam. We're getting to the point that all contact information on the Internet has be treated and guarded like a social security number!

Don, there's ways to make email addresses clickable that cannot be read by bots.

Here's a working example of one such method that uses Javascript to obfuscate the email address (look at the source code & you won't find the email address anywhere) .

It's all done with Javascript and you can generate your own bot-proof mailto links at Dynamic Drive

They use that technique of posting email addresses to internet to create "honey pots" to collect spam. It helps training the spam filters with very low risk of false positives.

I don't think so. Spammers can easily scan people's emails from the internet. It doesn't mean we have spammers here in this forum as member. And displaying your email publicly is dangerous. Not just spam emails that you'll get, but also scam emails and hack attempts.

I can easily get people's emails from this forum by typing this at google search:

While I have no doubt that in a community as large as the Warrior Forum we have a few spammers (and a few PM's I've received are a testament to that) the fact is that this post is not really about that. It was obvious from the first reply that the OP put his e-mail address in his signature, leaving an open invitation to bots and scrapers to harvest his email address.

There is no proof here that the spam he subsequently received actually came from Warrior Forum members. So really the post title is somewhat misleading.

My question would be - if you didn't want to receive unsolicited email why did you put your email address in your signature? Isn't this like putting your phone number on a billboard and then complaining that you are receiving anonymous phone calls?

Probably there are people who have seen or read your email that they sent some message to you. Base on your statement, you posted your email in your sig.
When you posts or displays your email as your sig, you are presenting to the public that you want to them to send you some message or inquiries or something.
As what fellow warriors have gave their ideas, change your sig and try not to display your email next time.

As it has already been mentioned a bunch of times the Warrior Forum has no control if site scrapers index emails from the site, even the people using the site scrapers have little control over where the info comes from. If you post it, they will come!

Also it has been mentioned a few times and I thought I would just repeat it, the way you have your signature right now is pretty much a waste of time. What is the value to anyone sending you an email? At the very least use a premium email address, although that still would not be very effective, it at least proves you invested 10 bucks in your business rather than a free gmail. I use a gmail FOR spam and am pretty selective about who I give my real email addresses to.
