Finally decided to go with my own domain.. opinions?

I've been messing with IM off and on since early on in the summer with mixed success. I was mostly bum marketing, making Squidoo lenses promoting various Amazon products. I put a lot of effort into it at first, but largely forgot about it. I checked my Amazon account a couple weeks ago and -- lo and behold -- it sold some expensive mattress thing I promoted along with 3 other items they bought for a cool $50 commission. Without me doing anything.

Well, that really caught my attention. I figured there might be something to this after all. So, I decided to start my own blog. Sort of. See, I don't like the idea of buying a new domain for every niche. After a little research, I decided to just make a subdomain per niche under a domain I already owned (a comedy blog I rarely update). The domain name itself is pretty nonsensical, and it's a 5 letter acronym for something that is equally nonsensical. I'm all about consolidation, so this seems like a good way to keep track of everything with minimal effort.

The blog is about home and garden... stuff. Not something I'm really into, but I like writing and I was able to crap out a few entertaining and sort of helpful articles about stuff I have only a passing knowledge of yesterday. And today I posted a few product posts similar to the ones that made sales on Squidoo. Then I promoted it through a handful of blog comments, RSS feed aggregate sites, and an article I BSed my way through about installing drywall in basements on ezinearticles. I know, that's not enough. I'm just getting started.

The url is home-and-garden.iffal.org (sorry, can't post links yet). Any feedback would be appreciated.

Am I on the right track? Am I gonna crash and burn?

Seriously, tear it apart. My feelings don't work right so you won't hurt 'em.

Love the comedy on your site. I don't think you will crash and burn. Keep going. Only confusing thing was that post criticizing big power tool websites. Great post, but what site is the mystery site? Yours? Was that meant to be a comment from a reader? It is good, it is just confusing, as it shows being written by admin.

The mystery site was the makita website.. I went there looking for product info and was assaulted with pictures of dirtbikes and no clue as to what the company even did. I just made a post about it to add to my content and because I was genuinely irritated with it.

I'm posting as admin because I have this preoccupation with privacy that keeps me from putting my real name on anything internet related.. and I figure a random Googler that clicks on a product link won't care much who wrote the article, just where to buy it. If that's a bad strategy, let me know, I'll put a name up there. Probably not my name, but a name at least.

  • Hah, after drumguru69 said that I had to go check it out - awesome. Check out The Oatmeal (google it, but be careful of the robots), I can imagine you doing that kind of stuff.

Re: your gardening stuff, why not buy a related domain and chuck it on there.

Thanks everyone for your feedback! I'd love to go the comedy route but it's tough to sell physical products that way. Maybe clickbank is the way to go?

Does the fact that it's a subdomain really affect anything that much? If it does, I'll definitely get a separate one. My only reason in keeping it a subdomain was to better keep track of everything.

One domain name is all you need. A great way to be successful with your blog is always post 2 unique articles per day. Whatever you do, don't stop even if you don't see any sales or visitors. A lot of people do this. They will come.

If you can do more then 2 unique articles per day then that's great!
