Where Do You Get Images For Your Blog?

Everyone knows that people like pictures. Most people also know that other people do not like you stealing their images. Bloggers typically use at least one image per post. The question is, where do all of those images come from?

Where do you get images for your websites and blogs?

Do you take them from Google images?
Do you take them from Google images and make sure that they don't have a copyright mark on them?
Do you buy images through stock photo sites?
Do you use public domain photos? (we all know this is a bit limited depending on your niche)

Just wondering where you guys get your images from and what you could consider ethical use of images.

Let the discussion begin.

I get all my images from Big Stock Photo, everything is royalty free, yep I pay for them, and I'm willing to, others are not.

But I know I will never be in hot water with anyone.

    Cheers

Yeah. It's certainly safer that way for your business model, especially if you're relying on income from Adsense, where they strictly prohibit the use of copyrighted images on pages and posts that display their ads.

Not everyone can buy expensive stock photos so for that reason, I stick to sxc.hu
I sometimes find the image I'm looking for on flickr and contact the owner for the rights. Some of them a rather nice and let me use the images with their permission.

I go with either google images or free stock photo sites. If I'm putting together a bigger project/site I'll make sure to use royalty free/paid stock photos. I don't put myself in a situation where I pretend to own the rights to the images (watermark them etc.) I have yet to get any notices to take down any images I've used, but would gladly comply if someone wanted me to and could show me proof it is their image.

Unfortunately - sometimes they don't stop at a take down notice.

For example - Getty Images routinely tries to extort royalties $1000 or more for the time the image was already on your site.

Big mistake to use Google Images.

Why is the burden of proof on the photographer when you're the one who used the image illegally in the first place?

Just because most photographers don't know how to search for image theft doesn't mean they think it's OK for others to use their images without permission.

I personally use sxc.hu, but it's not always easy to find what you need. However, with a bit of creativity, you can usually find a suitable image.

For example, on my weight loss blog I needed to convey the idea of feeling fat, so I used a picture of...

    A walrus!

Also, today's post was about reaching a weight loss plateau, but the only pictures that worked needed permission and attribution, but I didn't have time. So, I did a bit of searching with an open mind and found a picture of a wheat field. It may not have been perfect, but I think it worked in that context.

The point is that you can counteract the limited selection at free stock photo sites by having an open mind and being creative. It can take a while sometimes, but browsing is part of the fun.

    All the best,
    Michael

You're right. Nothing to worry about...except being sued for using copyrighted images. Oh, and by the way, images are some of the most strongly protected copyrights, and very expensive if you're sued.

The reason this is the case (to the best of my knowledge) is that there is no ambiguity. Someone can simply compare two images and instantly tell if they are the same, whereas the copywritten word can be more difficult to prove.

So, apart from being sued for a LOT of money, you're right, there's nothing to worry about. But that wouldn't be a big deal, right? Just a fly in the ointment.

      All the best,

Goodness, you need to read up the BASICS of copyrights... That's a crazy assumption, as crazy as "i'll copy all your content on your website, it's OK coz I found it on google and I don't see the word "copyright" in the articles."

On a more serious note. You are just crazy to use images that do not belong to you. Google it. Search for people sued because of image copyright.

You may decide to get on the right path!!!!

clipart.com You pay yearly fee and you get to use all their pics, all year for just about anything. Even for ebooks or artwork. (Many stock photo sites make you either pay by the pic or say 'not for works to be sold'.

I never want to be in Copyright trouble. To me it's worth the yearly fee to NOT pay a lawyer or fine. (And to know I can use it for my client's ebooks too.)

Why didn't you list "do you take your own pictures"?

I take all of my own pictures for my blog. On average, I take about 10,000 pictures a year.

I would rather take my own pictures, and have the rights to them, then have to ask someone else if I could use their picture.

This is a good point but certain factors have to be taken into consideration. Yes... some people could certainly take their own photos but some people don't have the time to come up with ideas and get props etc. To take a 'professional' looking photo is much more work than most people think. Anyone can buy a decent point and shoot camera or even a entry level Dslr and 'try' to take pro looking stock images but 90% of the time they will not look professional. It really depends on if you have the equipment, knowledge and skill to produce pro stock photos for your site. If the site owner wants to try to do it on there own and it look 'ok' then fine.

I run a hiking, camping, fishing, hunting,,,,, outdoors type of blog and forum. 99% of my images have something to do with nature. A picture I took 2 years ago will work in a blog post I made last night.

When I go fishing, out in the boat, hunting,,,, my camera goes with me. During the course of 1 fishing trip, I might take anywhere from 25 - 100 images, and an hours worth of video.

Picture I took a few weeks ago while out on a local river.

There are some totally free stock sites but you will get what you pay for ( or not pay for) Stock agency sites like iStockphoto.com are great and the quality can be very high but you will pay a lot for most high resolution photos. Whatever you do don't steal images off Google or anywhere else.

I found this thread searching for answers to the same question. I was wondering about using Photobucket. The photos on that site actually provide a code you can use to embed the photos, much like YouTube and their terms of service indicate that the photos can be used by anyone.

When you use any images you find online, however, there's always the danger that a copyrighted image was uploaded to a site without permission. That risk would be hard to avoid unless you paid for the image, and even then it wouldn't be 100% guaranteed.

I used to get my images from istock religiously. Then the Vetta collection came along (or more specifically the Vetta prices) and it has been downhill since then! I'm currently using ingimage, they have a million or so really decent images and you get 50 XL images per day for £44/month - worth considering if you use high-res.

    The pictures aren't spectacular, but they have 3 things going for it;

    1. It's a yearly plan, not by the picture so you can sign up and download as many as you want as long as it's not over 30 in a single day.

    2. These pictures are royalty-free and can even be used on things you intend to resell like artwork, blogs for flipping, and e-books. I use them all the time for e-books. (Many stock photos say no to that last part.)

    3. They have over 1 million pictures, including photos, photo objects, clip art, and animations.

I do believe in paying for pictures. I figure pictures are cheaper than lawyers any day.

Dreamstime.com is simply awesome. For the free section, click on the "Free Images" tab on the main navigation bar at the top. Although, you will have to signup for a free account in order to access and download the images. Each account is allowed 10,000 free downloads.

I like sxc.hu too for royalty-free pics. There's also Wikimedia Commons. Plus if you're blogging constantly relating to something you do, it's so easy to take your own photos & upload them. Or you could do videos & post the videos instead of photos; videos generally are well received & add great variety to a blog.

And if you're writing a review of a product, a lot of times you can get a pic from the vendor for a nice visual.

  • You can get some cool public domain pics from Federal sources at USA.gov. Just type in a word, then click Images. Most of the photos are public domain but the government does hire a few private photographers so those pictures are copyrighted. In other words, you have to read the fine print on each image. Also note state, county, and city sites are not in the public domain. Good sources are NASA, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the National Park Service.

I have searched most of the stock agencies mentioned here (both free and paid)
The problem is, when I search a specific product model for example Samsung UN55D8000,
There comes no result. I can't find any images for my products.
    So what should I do?
Where can I find images for the products that I promote?

If you took an image from a website and credited the source, shouldn't that be okay?

Public domain is like Mozart's music or Shakespeare's plays--the property rights are expired and you may use the original works however you like. Even more, if you add your changes, like making a musical arrangement, or editing the original Shakespeare's text, you will get a copyright on your outcome.

I've used iStockphoto on the past and love the quality but recently I found this site: High Quality Royalty-Free Stock Photography From $1 - Stock Photo | PhotoDune and it has some quality images as well. Also, check out their "sister" sites as CodeCanyon.net has some amazing Wordpress plugins and GraphicRiver has some nice web icons and web graphics (besides photos). No affiliate link, just like the group of sites!

I simply get images from google images search. It is really easy and fast. you just need to change the Alt tag of the image.

Look here. Pay attention how Google managed to find the SAME IMAGE on lots of different domains even though some versions were cropped. Note also that big stock image companies have lots of employees whose only work is to search through the Internet and find the stolen images. When they find one, they pass it on to the lawyers. And then.. well...
You might be safe ONLY if you put "noindex" META tag on your pages. But then of course, no visitors either. Better take your tomorrows problem down today.

I obtain my images from istockphoto - very cool place to get images.

    Another place is stock.xchng (sxc.hu)

I also use Google images. However - when I use Google - I ALWAYS make sure I cite the images and give the owner of the image credit even though the images are free. It's only fair to give credit where credit is due.

Looks like this subject is well covered. Like most ideas, it is "different strokes for different folks". But regardless of the photos, images used and where they came from, the one BIG subject remains; "How do we get the mass of traffic to see them" and thereby contribute to having a profitable business?

I usually get my photos from only those FREE websites. Sometimes, even if you give credit to some websites, you could still get into trouble with Google! It's pretty dangerous these days.

I buy them from stock photo sites... although there are sites who lets you use the image as long as you put their link on your blog, I sometimes use that too.

If your blog is really worth it, I guess it wont really hurt to make a little investment in buying your pictures. You can't take the risk of getting a DMCA notice for not paying a few cents.

Just make sure it is legal. If you are taking someones copy righted photo for your blog or website, it can be a no no for Google. Either you need to pay for a stock photo, make your own, or find photos that don't have copyright issues.
