What is the #1 first thing that someone should do who is new to internet marketing?

I just started, I have read a lot but have not taken any action. Should I start by building a personal blog and developing a brand or are blogs a thing of the past. Thoughts?

start with some sort of plan. understand that for anything to succeed you need traffic & conversions. simple as that really. now in order for that to happen you gotta be willing to do the amount of work necessary to break into your niche. if not, don't waste your time.

You're in luck, this was just covered in a recent thread. Honestly though, I would ignore half of the stuff in it at first. If you want to know why, find my post down there. I explain what you should do first in great detail. It's the most important step, nothing is more important:

Edit: I have 2 posts in that thread. The one I'm talking about is post #30.

Why does everyone recommend Aweber to new people just starting out? I would opt for a service that doesn't cost any money to get started with.

Mailchimp is a great example, they will give you up to 2K subscribers and 12K emails/month for free.

You want to keep your costs down when you are starting out. Camtasia is another great example, everyone recommends buying this $300 piece of software and no one ever talks about CamStudio, the free open source alternative. I could go on and on about this.

My point is to always question the status quoe. There are lot of reasons why the majority of people all do the same things. None of those reasons are because its the most effective thing to do.

If you really want to make it in IM you need to ignore all the old timers and guru's. The longer they have been in this business the more likely their advice is going to be stale and worthless.

The fact is, the internet evolves fast, very fast, and most people simply can not keep up. What was great advice 1 year ago could very well be worthless tomorrow.

A lot of these guys only make money by selling ancient ideas, it is the tail wagging the dog. There methods don't really need to work, the sales copy is what needs to work. This is a very ugly truth.

The reality of the IM situation is that it was a whole lot easier 10 years ago. Any moron could have made it big back then.

In 2001 the top 10 websites accounted for 31 percent of pageviews. In 2010 the top 10 websites accounted for 75 percent. (source) Not to mention people LOVED getting new email back then and signed up for it without any hesitation. Now people LOATHE it.

Aweber is no longer a valid starting point. Build a mailing list yes but don't pay 20/month for it out of the gate. Less then 10% of mail gets delivered, and even less gets read. The Guru's won't tell you this but I'll be straight, the effectiveness of email marketing is going down the drain. It has been in decline and will continue to go that way.

The real estate we are fighting over is shrinking and the competition is increasing. The longer you wait to get started the harder its going to be. The difficulty of getting started is being compounded, its off the scale.

This is why I would take everything some old timer says with a grain of salt. They started in a different time, EVERYTHING has changed and will continue to change.

You can still make it, there will always be those who can break through. But don't take anything lightly, you will have to earn it. More so now then ever before. If my words demotivate you then this might not be the right thing for you to do. If your still motivated to knock this out after reading everything I just wrote, then you might just have what it takes.

The process for success is the same as it has always been. The same way our species evolved to become what we are today. Trial and Error. Good business is a cloned copy of evolution. The faster you take action, the more trials you do, the faster you will progress forward. Defeat = feedback not failure. Keep moving forward, never hesitate, and never look back. There is only one way anyone can fail, and that is to give up, and stop moving forward.

Except that if you try using them (Mailchimp) for IM or any MMO niches, they will close you down and ban you.

First thing, make a decision on why you're doing this. Second is to take action everyday. Begin with researching a market, setting up a blog and posting to it, build an e-mail list (use Aweber), and learn about the game - you will want traffic and converting offers - to do these you need to be learning and implementing every single day.

The number one thing is to write this down:

Find a big group of people who want something that they don't have.

Make the thing that they want.

Sell them the thing you just made.

A very difficult (make that impossible?) question to answer, without knowing a whole lot more about you and your interests.

... but, that won't stop me

I'd say the prime thing is FOCUS ... in case you didn't see the emphasis FOCUS.

OK, there are loads of things fighting for that prime spot and Focus is probably one of them, but it means making a decision on what you're going to do and then stop looking at all the glitzy options that will display themselves to you every day. You don't have to even choose the best option, because if you focus on it you will succeed ... assuming that you have or learn the knowledge and take action.

The thing you want to avoid (hands up for doing this one ... that's me) is looking for something new to buy every day, or a new technique.

Decide on how you want to make money - I'm presuming this is why you're doing this - and then find a way that feels good to you, of course you'll check it is viable, because you want to wake up in the morning feeling excited about it, not dreading it.

Feel free to expand upon your ideas and likes/dislikes and I'm sure someone will be able to offer more specific advice.

... as for blogs, they are still good, maybe even better depending on your market than they were, but I'd always go for registering my own domain and not doing a free one.

OK, This is the wRight way,

Do something, anything, just do it.

    Make $1,000 doing it.

Write an ebook on How I made $1,000.

Sell $1000 worth of your eBook.

Write another eBook on How I made $1,000 selling my eBook. Sell that.

Do something else and start all over.

Save all your eBooks to compile them into a complete marketing course/system and sell that.

While you are doing the above you will learn more about IM than anyone could teach you.

So, what could you do first?

    These are just suggestions.

Join a membership site that offers Master Resell Rights to How To products.

Download them and burn them on a CD or DVD.

Choose products that solve problems for small businesses, I mean Mom and Pop Small, many if not most of them don't have a clue about the Internet to this day.

Put on your disk, MRR products on "How To" get hosting for your website, build a website, buy a URL, clean viruses, browser hijackers and Trojans etc off your PC, "How To" find and set up an auto responder to start an email campaign for your business, publish your restaurant menu on the Internet, build a community around your business, create a pdf eBook to give away to your customers.... On and On and On. Give this CD or DVD the Thud Factor by putting everything Mom and Pop would need to hand to Jr. to make their web presence a reality.

Go to any busy street down town, Walk in Hand them a flier with all the benefits of your $6,000 ecourse (Yes I said $6k or don't you know about Stores online?)

Tell them you are sick and tired of Small Businesses being taken advantage of so you have made this available to your neighbors for $100, but only in face to face sales so when you walk away the deal walks out too, and mean it.

You will sell one CD/DVD every couple of hours so It won't take you long to make $1K.

A Variation. Don't want to burn the CDs. Set up a password protected VAULT with all the downloads in it. Sell Membership to your VAULT.

    Another Method, (There are hundreds)

Think up something new that no one has ever heard of before. You will know no one has heard of it, because there will be a URL avaliable with your "new thing" Remember, Butterfly Marketing? Offline Gold? Bum Marketing?

About 10 minutes ago I bought PigMarketing.com . (coming soon)

Anyway take a tried and true method, give it a few new twists, think up a great name for it and build a product around it.

    Sell it.

Start your eBook on how you did it. Wait, I guess I just wrote the eBook for you.

If you have no knowledge of internet marketing start by doing the free 30 day challenge. This will teach you all you need to know about the groundworks of IM.

Once you have this under your belt try to score some freelancing gigs, or offer a service.

Then when you have some experience and money behind you look to build a solid business plan outsourcing what you need to.

    Hope this helps.

First things first, learn the basics.

Read about internet marketings and the different methods involved.

You can't just go : Oh ok I know I can make money with a website, so I'm gonna make a website about some random stuff, put some ads on it and money will flow in, that's not how it works .

Ask yourself about your action history: How many times were you able to work with full focus and determination when others were having fun AND making money while you were not, and at the same time being criticized by those whom you truly loved?

Because if you enter IM, in most all cases, that will be your near future.

    1. Think about what you're passionate about (what will you not get sick of talking about/writing about/researching about/Tweeting about every day?)

    2. Think about what you're good at (a certain skill, like writing, designing, etc)

    3. Do your homework, and come up with a solid business plan that showcases your skills and your passions.

    4. Focus on one goal at a time, and stay away from all of the "shiny objects"

Why assume someone/everyone needs to use services that cost no money? A lot of people actually have a budget to spend some money getting started. Spending on something like Aweber can be a wise investment - provided you have an idea of what you are going to do with that list.

Blogs are a great way to build a legitimate, residual income. They are in no way a thing of the past. Virtually everyone who makes it big online has a blog--regardless of the kinds of products they promote. With blogging platforms like the user-friendly Wordpress, they are simple to set up and maintain.

One of the coolest things about having a blog, in my opinion, is that you are able to generate multiple streams of income from one blog. Promoting other people's product through product reviews and getting ranked in the search engines and earning a commission for every sale (affiliate marketing) is just one way.

You can also build an e-mail list of targeted buyers so that you can promote products to them whenever you want. When you have a responsive list, all you literally have to do is take a few minutes to send out an e-mail and hit send. This is another way that a lot of gurus are able to make so much money in a day (like you see in Clickbank screen shots). Having a list is also something recommend regardless of the types of products you sale.

You can also sell ad space. Once you start getting a lot of traffic to your site, people and companies will contact you to purchase space on your blog as a means to advertise their company in order to get more traffic. It's a lot like paying for advertising in your local paper. The cool thing is that companies will pay a lot of money to do this and pay on a weekly or monthly basis. You make money from them as long as they continue to pay for space.

If you ever create your own product or service, you can also sell it on your blog as well. There are tons of possibilities with a blog. A lot of newbies will start out with putting up adsense blocks as a way to make money until they learn affiliate marketing and what not. There's just so much you can do with a blog.

I also have two more tips for you. Before you start your blog, you need to decide what niche market to go into. This will determine what kind of products you will sell. It should be something that you both enjoy and that's profitable. Here are just a few examples:

    weight loss/dieting

    dating/relationships

    Learn Spanish

Pet care industry (animal training - i.e. dog, supplies...)

    Clothing/Fashion

Learn Guitar (products that teach & guitars and related stuff)

    Gardening

    Cooking

    Sports

Video games (cross promote gaming consoles and related stuff)...

There are tons and tons of niches out there. Some will be more profitable than others, Your blog should focus on one theme. In addition to product reviews, you should also post articles - breaking news/latest happenings in whatever niche you choose. It's also important that you host your blog on your own domain so that you control the content and don't lose your work. Stay away for adult/sexually-oriented stuff b/c it will be more difficult to get traffic.

    Good luck,
    Joey
