Hi

While browsing the forums I noticed several terms like white hat, blue fart, black hat etc which appear to refer to marketing approaches. Can anyone enlighten me please?

white hat, is going with organic SEO following the search engine Term of use (doing it the natural way most likely manually).

black hat: is trying to go around the SEO rules like automated creation of backlinks (you can find these packages with unrealistic prices like 15,000 backlink for $10), ... etc Black hat SEO can be dangerous on your website, if you get caught by search engines, usually your website is penalized and get out of search engine for a period of 3 months.

Most people mix white and black to stay in the safe area and grow faster.

Blue fart is when you eat blueberry chilli. It's surprisingly good, but has unexpected consequences.

    Hey Di,

Whitehat is simply a strategy that you use going by the rule. Blue fart (or blackhat) is a shady strategy that you can do to fool Google temporarily. Some of the examples of blackhat will be cloaking, keyword stuffing, hidden text, etc.

You can learn more about whitehat, greyhat, or blackhat at this link:

If you type "black hat" in one word it turns out as bluefart.

You can not use the word black-hat without the hyphen... censored, kind of (it's a joke).

White hat is the legit way for seo, manual and more hard work.

Blue fart/ legit way to get better search engine ranking.
Mostly my competitors have some BH SEO done, most probably it'll get the site banned from google sooner or later, but you can try going grey hat.

White Hat = You pay the sales rep at the newspaper to have your flyer in this Sunday's edition.

Grey = You follow the paperboy and leave your flyer next to the paper at the door.

Black = You pay the paperboy to slip your flyer in all of the papers before he delivers them.

    You will get even more confused with the terms as there are different interpretation depending from person to person and also because there is a thin line between the white and gray which usually gets confused and thrown to black (if that even makes sense). But simply put;

White hat = you do nothing but, come up with a good content, a good website something useful (a list of top blla blla, a how to whatever, you name it) and people like that piece of content and "refer" (read link to it) to their readers from their website as a "resource" to a more in-depth information.

Gray hat = when there is your intervention to build links from different resources (now this is when people get confused, the intervention can be done manual as well as automated through tools, fact is, as long as the automation is not senseless (i.e. creating forum profiles from unrelated sites, leaving blog comments from completely off topic blogs and pages).

Black hat = involves, creating backdoors, tricking search engines by hiding "content" from visitors but making it visible to search engines, exploiting other peoples websites to gain a link, exploit peoples computers to gain links etc..

P.S. LoL @ Matt Maiden, you got me laughing!!!
