Blogging - specific or general?

Hi all,

I'm new here and want to know if I should start a blog:

1. for a specific topic; or
2. a general one with stories on a wide range of topics, recommending affiliate products where appropriate.

Appreciate all feedback. Thanks!

Ken

Do both and see which one works best for you.

Be specific, but ensure that there is enough traffic to ensure it can be profitable. Cater to a specific interest, so people interested in the topic continue to return for more information.

Thanks buddy. That's what I was thinking too. I've just got to find a niche I am comfortable with.

I think the way to go is to do both...

Keep a blog of "your journey" where you talk about what works for you and what doesn't. Share your story so far and things you are testing... People love to see these types of blogs and root for you.

Make some niche / affiliate blogs to try to rake in some commissions.

Hi Matt, this is a great idea! It never crossed my mind to do that. What's an "in" niche at this time?

Be specific with something probably around 70% of your blog. The other 30% you can still blog generally but best if it is related to your niche.

You can do both. I have niche blogs that focus very specifically on promoting one offer, and I have a more general free affiliate training blog which I originally started as a training base for my affiliates.

It's 90% or more free for that reason and only promotes a couple of products that I'm very confident my affiliates have to have to find the success they're seeking.

Take a look at it to get an idea of a general (free) blog and use it to guide you in your decision.

I won't send you to one of my specific niche blogs because you might go an buy the product there <grin> and that kinda goes against the spirit of my trying to help people out here.

Interesting idea, Allan. I'll definitely check out your free blog to pick a few more ideas.

When I can afford it, I'll return the favor and get one of your products, which I'm sure will help me more in my business. Thanks!

        Thanks everyone!

I'm glad that the answers were mixed. I'll surely work on a specific niche but at the same time, will also look into a general blog based on the ideas shared by Matt and Allan.

This is an awesome helpful group!!

        Cheers!

A general blog would obviously get more traffic. But then who's to say there aren't a million of these already out there? Just do a specific one and post content about both.

If you are being a comedian or a youtube clown, being general is the best as you can talk about so many funny stuff like the people you hate or your annoying brother and so on. If you are to start a niche like me (a health based one currently) then you have to be a little more specific where you write about supplements, health conditions and etc and ads can be based on your niche or a little bit general like a Download Movie Membership ad where its a big trend towards everyone compared to ads like a Dog Training ebook, in a health based blog. In conclusion, you should be more topic specific in a niche blog instead of being a random guy who rambles about off topic stuff which might not interest your readers.

make it specific. That's because it will be easy for you to attract targeted traffic and increase the conversion rates, also recommend specific products within your blog. But make sure there is sufficient demand for that specific niche that you are targeting...
