How to encourage commenting/participation on niche websites?

I love getting real, legitimate comments and participation on my niche websites, but that is very rare. I probably get less than 1 legitimate comment or email per month on my niche sites, which isn't very much. By a niche website, I mean something like a laptop reviews website, or similar.

Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions on encouraging commenting or interaction on niche websites? Obviously, by virtue of being a niche website, sometimes they just aren't something that people would comment on.

This definitely depends on the niche you're in. Laptop reviews would probably be pretty tough to encourage interaction... However, I've got niche health blogs and investing blogs that get loads of comments on every post.

If you really really want comments you can

    a) Ask questions in your posts that encourage a response...
    b) Use do-follow backlinks and something like CommentLuv to encourage people (also encourage boatloads of spam)...
    c) Run a contest. "Best comment wins $15 Amazon gift card" or something like that.

I personally wouldn't worry too much about comments on the type of niche blog you're running (laptop reviews). It's going to be a struggle. Make sure to build a list (via pop-up or sidebar opt-in) and just mail a promotion every once in a while and mail about your latest blog posts you'll get traffic...

Try to "Get the conversation started" post a controversial first reply to get people talking.

You can put out polls using something like poll daddy. Also, maybe some sort of contest that is relevant to your niche to get conversations started. Also, try posting something controversial to stir up some sort of debate...may be hard with some niches but think outside the box! Good Luck!

Here's what you can do. You can have a blog setup. Now start building a list of subscribers in your niche. Lets say once you have around 200 to 300 subscribers you can shoot your subscribers one question and ask them what are their problems in your niche. You can make a blog post with this question and ask them to help you in understanding their problems in your niche.

Send a mail to your list and ask them to post comments in your blog post. Many will post their comments because of the relationship you have build with them. You can also post any good article or something where you can get your subscribers to interact and tell them to comment on your blog post.

So combine the power of list building, relationship building and blog and you can then motivate your subscribers to do the commenting. You can even give a free gift at times to get people to participate on your blog posts. Hope this helps...
