Music Band Online Promotion

Hey everyone, I know there's a thread for this but I feel like that thread was flooded with trolls.

Anyways - I have been given the opportunity to promote a band, and need some help.

I was just asking if you guys have any ideas that you can lay out there, because they want to release an album soon. However, I figured in order to make this a success, they need to create as much buzz/hype as possible!

So far I know the 3 main core: twitter/facebook/youtube will help create a buzz for them.

Along with forums, blog commenting, article directories (?), social bookmarking.

Is there anything else? Please let me know thanks everyone!

I think youtube without any doubt for anything related to music.... twitter and faccebook will only help to gain more youtube views and subscribers.

    Thank you

The best thing you can do for them is to build a list. This is a standard thing to do - and it works.

Now, I can give you examples from my own life, and from my friends but there is one you may be aware of - Coldplay.

They sold gazillions of tickets and downloads when everyone else was struggling. How?

They offered their single as a free download (for a limited time) in exchange for the email address. They now have a huge database they can contact any time they have anything new. And of course, they do contact their list.

YouTube etc, are important but the goal of the business (as with any other) is to sell tickets, music, and merchandise.

Whatever you do, make sure you own that list. That way, you can still make money regardless of what a label does.

You should also advise them to create a Facebook application. They should have people "Like" them and them they give them one of their best or most popular singles. At the same time, the app should be able to capture their names and email addresses. With this info, they could share with their "Likers" and email subscribers the behind the scenes of their tours and album creation, interviews and possibly even how to play some of their songs on instruments like the guitar or piano. And of course in the process they will also be recommending their products in their albums. A great way to generate buzz would be for them to offer their album to their subscribers at a reduced price for 24 hours say and state it that they would increase the price when it is made available to the general public, etc. So many ideas. Hop this helps.

Interesting thread started here. I'll be reading. I've just been blown away by a friend of a friend who has the most ethereal voice and comedic timing. She deserves a bigger audience.
From my limited knowledge so far...dynamic website. Linked up to the trimunative of FB YouTube & twitter. Fan page a must, as mentioned above quality press release, give product away, build the list and get folks involved.
Plan the attack and attack the plan.

How do you do that? In terms of making a facebook app for likes? Good ideas!

My daughter is a pop singer and has been featured on a number of social media sites. She has enjoyed hundreds of thousands of song plays and has thousands of fans/friends on her sites. It really is not that difficult to get a buzz going on these sites.

A key to using these sites is to help drive traffic to your OWN bands website. There you can make product sales, share more news, collect emails etc.
Don't get locked up into making FB, Youtube, Twitter etc as the end all be all. You have no real control over these sites and it would be like building up a blogger blog instead of your own website. Use them as tools.

Reverbnation makes it easy for almost everyone to create newsletters. You can easily embed songs, tour dates, social media sites and other material in the templates. They have a free newsletter available for bands to use up to a certain number of members. Once you get past that you will need the paid version. Even though I have aweber for my lists and could easily add my daughters list, we use Reverb because it is really makes it simple to communicate with fans and add those touches.

Bottomline is sales. If the bands goal is to get ahead with the labels, then demonstrated sales is essential. It is not enough to just show fans (though it helps) sales are crucial.

If the band is already signed and looking to get that buzz louder, than using social media sites is a great way thru fan interaction, the newsletter etc.

Create a Wikipedia page for the band, if you haven't. And for the upcoming album too.

There's a popular Facebook app called Band Profile where you can add your band. It's published by ReverbNation. Btw, if your band is not a part of RN community yet, I'd recommend you to add them.

List building is the greatest of great ideas.

I have tons of contacts in music industry including reporters and critics, send me your press release

I think youtube is definitely the final channel you want to work with. There has been so much success with unknown bands using youtube. I'd use various different channels (Facebook, reverbnation, twitter etc) all to drive traffic to the youtube channel. That's there the fans can really see what the band is made of. If they get a large enough following there is no way they (and you) can't succeed. Keep plugging away.

There's a nice looking web platform for building free websites for promoting bands at: Band websites that work - no web design skills needed | Bandzoogle

They have a free trial and the monthly rates are very reasonable after that.

These are great tips. Does anyone know of any good forums/blogs where I can promote a music video? I'm having a bit of a challenge promoting a music video on YouTube. I'm utilizing facebook, twitter, and youtube comments. Anyone else have any suggestions?
