Admit it... when you first got started marketing online you weren't the sharpest knife in the drawer.

Let's share some stories about the misconceptions and misunderstandings you've had because, as embarrassing as they might be, I'm going to go out on a limb and suggest it will help beginner marketers who are constantly coming to the forum.

I'll go first:

I remember way back when I first got started online (2003) and wanted to put my ebook online for sale. I literally thought I had to upload as many copies as I was selling and was afraid of running out when I went to bed.

Oh... it gets better... I also thought I had to leave my computer on all the time so people could get the download. LOL

I once spent an entire month create an affiliate sales page review on the "water into gas" product that was a HUGE hit om clickbank back in 2008.

I thought that the sales will just come in all by itself cause I had the keywords in my domain.

Results: 93 visits. 0 sales = Epic Fail.

Lesson learned: Market research + good copy + testing = Hours and hours of time..(and headaches)

this is the kind of thread we needed. Well, when i first started i bought a domain with hostgator and hosting and with my name too. After realizing having your own name for domain isnt good. I also outsourced seo for competitive keywords while i could have bought an expired domain. Age was a big factor for ranking.

I remember building my first website in 1997. I had a book about how to learn html that I was following step by step, word for word.

I was working on the home page and I made 3 or 4 animated gifs that showed lava flowing into the ocean (hawaii site). However, shortly therafter my page stopped loading completely (this was in the days of dialup).

I CALLED MY HOST and told them that their hosting was broken and could they fix it right now cuz I was paying for this. The guy on the other end took a look at my website and told me that there was no way my site would ever load and I needed to take all those images down.

I did, and it loaded fine. OOOOPS. embarrasing.

One thing I learned is to stop and think about it for a second. I didn't make any real money online that I could really be proud of until I started here. I figured it would be good start at the place where we are all learning how to make money and offer my services to those who need them. I learned sometimes you need to get your hands dirty and do things others wont do in order to build a good capitol to branch off from. Some models might be the best fit for everyone, start small and grow big.

Haha!I love this post...When i first started with Internet Marketing, i thought that my site would appear in the first page of Google, simply by having the keywords in the domain name. When i understood, that this was not that easy,i purchased some gigs on Fiverr to have some better rankings...When i finally reached the first page of Google for my main keyword, i thought that it would stay there forever.

That it could only go up and never down!Hahaha..

    Keep it going!Great post..

My biggest blunder was being happy with a ppc campaign that made thousands of dollars.

Actually i didn't know how to quickly find other niches in the beginning. I had months and months of good checks.

Tried to learn how to find other niches but it was just way over my head at the time.

So instead keep digging till I got the right answers I went on shopping sprees instead.

One day, the unthinkable happened. The aff program I was with stop paying all affiliates.

I wasn't prepared for that. All of my income ran out before I learned how to quickly find other niches.

Gold sugar to brown sh(@. Life flipped upside down. Ego was destroyed. grrr them was some tough times mentally.

Tough lesson for me is, in order to be financially safe online diversify fast as possible and build a freaking list.

Ok...here goes...when I first started out, I immediately began using SeaMonkey for my html editor. I "assumed" that all you had to do was save the file and it would be seen on the internet.

I called up Hostgator to complain that it wasn't hosting my site properly and that I didn't appreciate their "sorry" service...

BUT little did I know, the problem was me. I had not uploaded the sales page.

That poor tech was so confused. For years I felt bad about the call because I gave that tech he** but it was all on me.

My very first sales page was sitting on my hard drive. Collecting dust.

    Soooo embarrassed!

When I was primarily doing local marketing about a year ago I had these clients that owned a jiu jitsu/MMA gym.

Up until that point I had taken care of all the "fulfillment" myself: SEO, linkbuilding, meta-tags, keyword research, you name it... I did EVERYTHING.

Finally I interviewed various outsource companies to take care of this work for me so I could expand my business. The MMA gym clients were the first clients of mine who I used this outsourcing firm with... the issue was that I didn't tread lightly like I should have. Instead of doing only some of the work and gradually introducing the outsourcees (they were from India), I gave them ALL the work. The result? Black-hat SEO, tags that made no sense (obviously written by someone who doesn't speak english), posting backlinks to irrelevant sites, and worst of all, wait for it..... GOT MY CLIENT BANNED from 3 of the most popular MMA forums on the net!

Needless to say my clients were not impressed, I ended up undertaking the project myself, fixed everything, got them back onto 2 of the 3 forums by aggressive follow up, and eventually won them back over thru my results.

MORAL OF THE STORY: When using an outsourcing company for yourself and (especially) for others, it is very important to gradually bring them into the picture, test out their work, and let them PROVE themselves worthy. On paper these guys looked way legit, got good reviews, etc.. but you will never know if they're right for YOUR business until they start working for you.. don't give them too much responsibility too quick!

Don't use a personal email account for business. I did that in the beginning. I had a Hotmail account. At my local bank one day doing some business with a loan officer, when asked my email address, I said, "so so and so at hotmail.com." She said, "hotmail?" I said "yes, hotmail." She said, "What kind of a name is hotmail?" She looked flustered and even a little embarrassed. Come to find out she had never heard of "Hotmail" and she thought I was saying "Hot MALE!" She actually thought I was calling myself a hot male. My wife, who was with me, thought the whole thing was a hoot!

Good thread idea, Mike. I actually got started in IM almost by accident. My site visitors requested products from me, so I obliged and it took off from there. Things went so well I didn't give two thoughts to anything except what I was already doing.

Then a hacker struck. Killed my traffic and search engine rankings ... and my income. It took about a year to build back up to where I was close to what I had going before.

The lesson: don't take anything for granted and don't put all your eggs in one basket.

That doesn't mean you should jump from one thing to another. I could have diversified within the same market niche. Or since I was already doing well at one thing, I could have then tried something new.

The one other big mistake was not building a mailing list sooner.

I finally got the hang of all this IM and decided to look for other traffic sources. I heard about this new magic traffic called PPV, so I immediately grabbed every source and course of information I could find. I took my time, set everything up, put my deposits down and was ready to roll out my campaign. I even had tracking software for all my keywords setup. I woke up Monday morning and took the plunge. I unleashed 4 PPV sources at once!
Next morning, woke up and noticed I had several emails from my hosting provider. Turns out, I put the tracking software on a shared machine, so I ended up crashing the box, lol. There went that account, along with 10 other niche sites. To make matters worse, when I looked at my stats, I saw only a few sales and burned 1k because I forgot to take in consideration that it was cost per k. AND, the sales I did have, I never knew which source or keyword they came from so I couldn't recover the campaign without burning more cash. Lesson learned: Buy a VPS or Dedi for the traffic tools, never a shared...

This might not be that relevant to the original thread but I just thought of sharing.

Before when I have no idea about SEO, I thought Google's way of showing results is just random or something like rotation. That being said all sites have the chance to be on the number one spot without doing anything.

Everytime I remember this, it never fails me to smile.

Ok, you outed my carefully held secret!

In 1999, I wrote my first IM ebook - and emailed Allan Gardyne of
AssociatePrograms.com with an "irresistible offer"... sell the
ebook to your list, and I'll let you keep 50% of the cash!

I hit 'SEND' and waited eagerly for the wealth building to start.
Couldn't *imagine* how ANYONE would turn down such a great deal.

Thankfully, Allan emailed me back soon - but with a polite rejection
    email.

That single message probably set me on the track to learning all
about how to sell online. I rank it among the BEST turning points
in my long and exciting infopreneur career!

My biggest blunder was trusting PayPal, and thinking they were a reputable company! Account freezes and unfreezes and refreezes and on and on.. went on for about two months, and this is with absolutely zero dodgyness from us. Once we decided to get rid of them altogether, it took another month or so to actually get the money out that people had paid us.

It didn't take much research to find that a LOT of people have been in this situation.

  • The biggest mistake I made was to take a formula which was only semi successful and then repeat it over 330 domains - imagine the expense! About 75% of those domains made no money.

I had the 'throw mud at the wall and see what sticks' approach and when it semi-backfired I was left with about 270 domains that were in need of a dramatic update and zero time in which to do anything about it. Talk about overwhelming.

Buying all money making programs and joining all membership sites! Buying all automated marketing software trying to use them without learning!

And the biggest fail of them all, buying websites on flippa that where "making" money just to realize that they weren't. Oh and researching keywords for days and buying almost 100 domains and then just build sites on 10 of them.

LoL IM is a real trap if don't know what your doing and if your looking for shortcuts all the time.

I started in 1995 started a hair loss company and within 6 mos I was making 4 to 6k a month.

I stupidly did not buy the domain name for the name of my company. Mistake number one and a huge one.

I also offered a 12 month money back guarantee , and I ended up getting people using all the vitamins and lotion and asking for all their money back. I should have just had ebooks for 19.95 and done that, no worry about refunds. I could have snagged some excellent domains way back then. LOL live and learn

I remember when I first started how I was making occassional affiliate sales with Clickbank and thinking "I bet I can whip together a product that everyone will just love to buy!"

So I spent 30 days putting together a product on Feng Shui (Remember when that was super hot? ) and I set it up....Granted, I researched a lot about it and compiled all of the information into a really nice guide. Nevertheless, very few sales came about it because the demand for that type of information was very small.

So I definitely learned to research my market more carefully before just coming out with any website....Now whether it is an affiliate page or an actual service I provide, I always try to go where there is strong demand or need.

One of the biggest lessons I learned is not to expect one website that I create to be a huge hit. No one website is going to make millions a month, heck, most won't even make 4 figures. But if you build up a portfolio of small websites that give a couple hundred bucks each a month, it really adds up over time!

    Mike,
This is a great thread...and fun to read.

I remember the first time I setup a merchant account for a little ecommerce store.

I was spinning my wheels...and doing everything "by the book"...and after a week...we didn't have a single sale.

To say I was dissapointed would have been a huge understatement...

Then, while I was screwing around in the admin panel for the merchant account, I noticed a small checkbox that said "Enable Test Mode"...

I immediately picked up the phone and called the merchant services line and asked what that box did.

I'm sure the person on the other end was holding back a big laugh...the whole time my cart had been in test mode...and it was rejecting 100% of the orders.

    I felt sick.

At the time, we had just started buying ads too. Doh!

I quickly looked into the storefront abandoned carts page and noticed that indeed there were quite a few orders that never got past the impossible "step 4 checkout" section.

    Well...live and learn.

Always test your cart First...BEFORE buying ads or sending out emails.

    All the best,

My mistake? I started Pennyroll.com 3 almost 4 years ago and for the first 2-3 years I forgot to monetize!

Sure I added Adsense and wrote the best content I could, thinking all money was made by creating content, great content, and waiting for Google to pay me.
I never realized that Adsense was only Adsense and only one form of monetization.

During that time I did sell things on eBay and made some money with e Books but I didn't do much with Pennyroll.com other than writing content.

In the niche I work in if you can call it a niche, and I don't think you can because it just too broad. I cater to people looking to earn money and generally they don't have much money to spend.

I found that I could promote products or rather services that don't cost anything but do generate income for them and I still make a referral bonus from the services I promote.

What I found is I enjoy the simple fact that when I make a commission I know the person who generated it, is going to have more money than they did before they signed up.

Thanks for this thread Mike, I had fun reading the stories shared by fellow warriors here. In my case, I started as an article writer last 2008 when a cousin of mine referred me to his former client. I was hesitant at first since I have no idea that I could earn something through online.
My hesitation at first to the Internet Marketing resulted for my late earnings online, since then, when I encountered some new concepts or ideas about the IM business, I never hesitated to try and read it myself.
Lesson learned: Never close our mind to what is new, since we cannot judge it until we have to test it yourself.

One of my first MMO efforts was slapping up a Squidoo lens expecting riches. I made squat. So I started blogs ... eventually too many to manage.

Wrote far too many articles I care to think about that weren't properly keyword researched or optimized.

Optimized too many pages with non-buying keywords.

Failed miserably and repeatedly building lists. Finally, after 2 years and shedding blood sweat and tears I have 2 lists building at an okay clip every day.

Created several crap review sites that made ziltch. After several attempts, I have 2 large affiliate sites doing pretty well.

About 3 weeks ago I bought Perry Marshall's Guide to Adwords. Today I set up 3 campaigns. 1 hour ago I received a notice from Google that one campaign was against their TOS. Had to delete it asap. I knew I was skating on thin ice, but wanted to see if it would work. Fortunately the other 2 are good and account is still alive and well. Now I know to be VERY CAREFUL with Adwords.

The list of failures and mistakes are longer than successes by a mile. But, the few successes I have I built on and repeat, occassionally tossing in some new techniques to diversify and expand.

This is a good thread, I don't know if I'm qualify enough to share my experience on this thread. Anyway, I started blogging like years ago. By that time, I was only focusing on Google Adsense because I just wanted to make some cash with Adsense. So I bought all ebooks about "Making Money with Adsense" but none of them works for me but only 1 ebook that really worked for me. So, I created few blogs using Blogger, and I'm so happy because I made money from Adsense. After that, some of my blogs were deleted by Blogger because it was considered as spam. After that, I stop blogging for years and now, I'm started to crawl back from the beginning.

Here was my harsh lesson. I setup a review site to promote an affiliate product, I used the same logo as the site owner and 2 images. Unaware that this would piss off the owner, and I got threatened with legal action!! He closed my account.
The weird thing was, I was promoting a lot for them and sent well over 1,200 opti-ins plus my own account was worth several thousands in unpaid commissions. Personally I think it was a little harsh, but oh well plenty of other people to promote.

My main lesson: once the money starts coming in, don't let it stop. I always pick a weekly goal for myself and do everything I can to accomplish it. When I first started I would make money and get too relaxed, not realizing that I was losing money! I learned that when something works, maximize it to it's full potential and diversify as much as possible.

I spent lots of money on PPC on keywords that I should not have ...instead should have gone about it via the organic way ...still learning lessons ...

Lots of PPC stories, it seems. Here's mine...

I did everything right. Did my keyword research, set up campaigns, put up the sales and delivery pages, tested everything, and 'hit the switch'.

        Make that 'tested almost everything'.

Seems I set the destination page for my campaign to the download page, not the sales page.

This is perfect... we turned the page I've been sitting here reading all your responses and quite a few made me laugh out loud. Others, not so much. But hey, it's all about contributing and every bit helps to make this forum better.

    Cheers,

I created an ebook, wrote a sales copy added an opt in, then removed the optin because I was hosting the autoresponder on my server and it was slowing everything down.

I sold ~50K over 4 years and never built a list

I thought that if so many people were easily selling low quality ebooks, I would very easily sell my ebooks only because of their quality and originality.

Later I discovered that a product's quality is not what really matters. If you want to sell something online you have to be an expert on internet marketing, and beat all the competition.

The last time I confessed a mistake, people beat me over the head with that mistake for years...

I don't confess mistakes anymore... :p It helps other people, including the little boy inside, to believe that I am the next best thing to perfect....

    Just kidding!!!

    Don't take life so seriously!!
