Will MailChimp suspend my account for excessive complaints?

Hi,

I am new to email marketing. I teamed up with Line6 (guitar amps) to have a giveaway. In order for them to have a chance to win, they needed to opt-in twice. Only those who agreed to the "future newsletter" list was exported for the (future) mailchimp import.

It's been about a year as I've been slacking on emailing my list. So this weekend I decided 'what the heck' and sent out a guitar giveaway to the subscribers. It's a great deal, it's a $1,500 guitar!!!!

Well, apparently some are not impress as I have 13 unsubscribers and 3 complaints. And that's only out of 280 opens; there still is 1,680 unopens yet to go... So at this rate, the complaints are going to be through the roof!!!

I expect my account to be banned, which really isn't a biggie to me because I was just sitting on this list. Hopefully I can export the folks who didn't unsubscribe so I can make a new mailchimp or Imnicamail account...

Can I make a new Mailchimp account after this gets banned?

Well I will say that you will not get hammered for unsubscribes since that is something that always happens but as far as complaints it will depend of what they are saying on the complaints. Remember that they can see your campaigns and opt-ins forms so they will evaluate everything before making a decision of banning you. If you know that you are doing everything in complaince with their TOS then just don't worry about it.

This is a tough one... You might be suspended, but they will probably see that you haven't sent an e-mail out in a long time and maybe understand. Hopefully what you sent out wasn't some scammy e-mail opt-in CPA offer though-- that can get you in trouble with some providers that don't want to be associated with it.

No, I sent out email linking to my website which links to the giveaway page. I did put in a price comparison below the giveaway to show them what the value of the guitar is... which is my affiliate links.

I do hope they don't suspend you for that. If they do not suspend, dno't repeat what you have done. If nothing, keep sending a monthly newsletter simply saying what's going on. That would help.

I really hope they don't ban me, because after this email (beings it is my first one) the next should get 0 complaints, because all the 'bad apples' will be weeded out...

But I read reviews that MailChimp are quick to ban...

I have no problems making a new account if necessary.

I don't know, maybe they will just understand and bare with you. But if it was a spammy email, then I think they might be more inclined to banning. For that they are not very forgiving. Especially if the website where the Guitar Offer is, is againts the use of such methods by affiliates to make sales or recruite new members.

No matter the case, good luck.

    Thank everyone who replied.

I woke up this morning with 560 email opens, 366 clicks and 5 complaints already. I know the complaints are because they don't remember subscribing... It's been over a year since I emailed them. So I get that. But they did double-opt in, so I don't feel like I am breaking any rules.

To this moment, MailChimp has not banned my account. I am really surprised. The complaint percentage is .03% thus far, and that seem excessive.

I would not send out any affiliate offers out with MailChimp, they're known for being extremely anti-affiliate marketing.

I have talked to them many times and of course they don't mind as long as you have some part in the offer you are promoting. Straight aff offers would not be good though.

I think if you get lots of complaints and unsub it could be an issue but just talk to them and see what they say.

Hi, I read your posts and that's why I felt comfortable including affiliate links. I read an email (I think it was you) that indicated that affiliate links are grey area, but are okay with it as long as it's in context.

I included the affiliate links in such a way just to use as a 'source' to the value of the guitar being given away. The primary message of the email is the giveaway.

My concern is the high number of unsubscribes and complaints. If they shut me down, I hope to export the "clean" list of subscribers who already unsubscribed so I can make a new MailChimp account. I am confident the next email won't have a high rate of issues.

          I think this is incorrect.

This is one of many relevant posts on the subject which say something clearly very different, anyway.

And this thread, this thread, and this thread may at least console you if you do happen to lose your account there over this. I wish you well with it.

You will be good man. No worries bro. Now make sure you back up your list just in case. Worse case scenario is that they ban you and you move on to a better provider.

That sounds like a question for Mail Chimp. Check this first:

I gotta say, I really like how simple and intuitive (and all the great features) mailchimp has to offer.

My only concern to using their opt-ins to gather emails is if they ever do decide to suspend my account. Then I'll have to start from scratch. Right now if they shut me down, it's no loss because I had this list since last year just sitting in a .CSV file on my harddrive doing nothing...

If it's not good enough for a Marketing Monkey, it's not good enough for anyone. Actually I completely agree with you, for all the reasons given by so many Warriors in the three threads linked to in post #14 just above.

From what I've heard MailChimp doesn't allow affiliate links so yes you are probably in violation of their terms of service.
