Facebook Business page - Use personal or Business option?

I have looked everywhere over the net including on facebook and thefacebook forum and there are no answers yet.

I want to get a facebook page for my small business and see that there is the option of using a business or a personal page. I see that I can also open one directly or through my own personal page?

The business option sounds right, except it appears to have a lot of restrictions on who you can contact etc. I dont intend on spamming everyone, but I do want to use a page that allows flexibility and is right for a small business.

Does anyone have a view on the current status of either of these options and which one might be best to use? I will mainly be using it to post links to articles on my website and if people are interested, they may buy product.

Any views? Please ... :-)

If you are building a page for your business you should always use the business option. If you would open it through your personal page you would annoy your friends with business updates.

      Hi HP

This is what FB says "Business accounts are designed for individuals who only want to use the site to administer Pages and their ad campaigns. For this reason, business accounts do not have the same functionality as personal accounts.

Business accounts have limited access to information on the site. An individual with a business account can view all the Pages and Social Ads that they have created, however they will not be able to view the profiles of users on the site or other content on the site that does not live on the Pages they administer. In addition, business accounts cannot be found in search and cannot send or receive friend requests."

So I was thinking isnt the business account just one big restriction?

But you are saying that if I created it Via my personal page (whether it is a business or private page for a business) then all the updates on that new FB page will go to my friends and annoy them if they are not specifically into my business?

So you are suggesting to create a business account from scratch (ie make sure I am logged out of my FB account?

THEN there is this little issue:

You may create a business account if you don't already have a standard Facebook account. To get started, you will need to first create a Facebook Ad or Facebook Page. Once you’ve entered in the required information, you will be taken to the "Facebook Login" page and asked if you have a Facebook account. If you do not currently have a Facebook account, then at this point, please select "I do not have a Facebook account." You will then need to enter your email address and date of birth.

Please be aware that managing multiple accounts is a serious violation of Facebook’s Terms of Use. If we determine that an individual has more than one account, we reserve the right to terminate all of their accounts."

Doesnt this mean that I have to create a business account via my personal account? If I have one? Yes?

Not to mention this: "Facebook profiles are meant to represent a single individual. Organizations of any type are not permitted to maintain an account under the name of their organization. We have created Facebook Pages to allow organizations to have a presence on Facebook. These Pages are distinct presences, separate from user profiles, and optimized for an organization's needs to communicate, distribute information/content, engage their fans, and capture new audiences virally through their fan's recommendations to their friends. Facebook Pages are designed to be a media rich, valuable presence for any artist, business or brand.

If you create a profile for your business, your account may be disabled for violating our Terms of Use"

So exactly how do you create a business page on FB separate from your profile?

Yeah man if you open a business account under a personal account option all it takes is a couple complaints to get your account banned then all your effort to build it will be lost. If you do it right the first time it will be right all the time

Yea personal page is for building your personal brand, showing your resume, but not for doing business, (you can also setup a fan page for a "personality" but many conceal any connection between their personal and business pages).

It can cost you a bit to get fans for your page, look at it as the cost of doing business, a recruitment campaign using Facebook ads with a good CTR (near 0.2%) might have click costs under $0.10.

So it was all a bit murky as to why I should choose either, but in the end there is no choice, I just created a business page via my personal page Healthy Dog Treats | Facebook

Now I will have to start the long journey of finding out how to attract fans and give them a reason to visit my site ... thanks for the help!

I thought you just create a page and people can "like it" and will only get updates that way. The personal discussions through walls and direct convos is against tos to use for biz.

There is no restrictions to page likes where the personal account has 5k limit. You can use pages as your wall main login too.
