Another Paypal Alternative - Amazon Payments

by sbucciarel Banned

Recently there was a big discussion about Paypal alternatives, due to Paypal problems with limited accounts, etc.

It is always a good idea to have a backup plan in place. In 4 pages of that discussion, I didn't see one person recommend Amazon Payments. Is anyone not using it?

I just signed up and already, after a whole 5 minute process, have a verified business account. I've had accounts with Amazon for so long, they already have all the information they needed to verify me and open the account.

All I had to do extra was add my bank account for withdrawals.

As you can see from the screenshot, I chose Simple Pay acct since that's the one that deals with digital goods, but they have two options, depending on your needs.

Is anyone else using Amazon Payments?

    Wow!!

I didn't even know Amazon had such a service. Did you have to talk to anyone over the phone? Or was the entire process, done solely over the internet?

      Hi sbucciarel

I had no idea that Amazon provided this service, it would be great to hear from anyone that is currently using it as an alternative to PayPal. Especially from people using over a long period of time as if the service has similar problems to PayPal, then the search for the Holy Grail of a decent online payment processor will continue.

No ... it literally took 5 minutes before I had a verified business account. Pretty exciting. I mean .. who doesn't have an Amazon account? Customers would easily pay via Amazon.

This's a golden opportunity to get many more sells IMO. I expect we'll have a higher conversion rate with Amazon.

I looked into using them. Very interested, but I'm scared that not many buyers are going to want to use Amazon to pay for digital goods (especially IM related stuff). It could work great in other, more mainstream niches.

Would greatly appreciate it if you could post a follow-up after a month or so if you intend to actively use Amazon Payments.

Amazon is such a trusted name, I can't imagine people not using it if they want the product. Just my hunch, but definitely worth a go as an alternative/back-up plan.

Thanks, I've known about Amazon Payments for a while, mainly because some of their payment methods have been integrated into AWS for a few years, but until recently I never really thought of it as a PayPal alternative.

Excellent point. Of course, PayPal is eBay and a lot of people trust them for online shopping, but most of those same people also trust Amazon and have accounts there (whether it's an affiliate account, AWS account, or just a regular "buyer" account). Whether or not it affects conversions is obviously something that needs to be tested, but in a lot of niches I could definitely see it being a realistic alternative to PayPal.

I shop on Amazon all the time and had no idea they offered this service. In my opinion Amazon is reliable and trustworthy so signing up is a no brainer.

I'm going to sign up right now because as the old saying goes...you should never put all your eggs in one basket.

Well, I signed up and was accepted by 2CO also. I plan on offering both payment options on my website ... and you can pay via Paypal through 2CO, so all the bases are covered this way.

Not sure that it is. Here's part of the TOS and it says at the end .. all of their network sites.

1.2 Creating Accounts. Your Payments Account is linked to your Amazon Account. To create a new Payment Account, you must either (a) register using your existing Amazon Account, or (b) complete the registration process for new users by entering all of the required information. If you register using your Amazon Account, the information in your Amazon Account will be used to complete the registration information for your Payment Account. You may be required to provide additional information based on your account type or service that you want to use with your account. If you do not have an existing Amazon Account at the time you register with the Service, a new Amazon Account will be automatically and concurrently established in your name with the same e-mail address and password you provide to us. For purposes of this Agreement, an "Amazon Account" is any customer account that you have established with a website owned or controlled by Amazon.com, Inc., or any Affiliate, or operated by Amazon.com, Inc., or its Affiliates on behalf of third parties
(the "Amazon Network Sites"), including without limitation those websites currently located at www.amazon.com, www.amazon.co.uk, www.amazon.de, www.amazon.fr, www.amazon.ca, www.amazon.co.jp, www.amazon.cn and any successor or replacement websites.

And looking over the TOS, anyone with an Amazon account can make a payment through it. An Amazon Payment acct is automatically made for them when they click the buy button, based on the information that they provided when they signed up.

Yes, unfortunate that not everyone can use it but still, there's quite a few countries that can and like you said ... anyone with an Amazon acct can pay through it.

People are so addicted to Paypal, and it's working out badly for quite a few people to be so reliant on just one processor.

Break the addiction and start testing alternatives out. Doesn't mean you have to give Paypal the boot. I still have an account in good standing. I just don't want it to be the only way I can accept money for products.

I must admit I am looking at Amazon more and more - when I swapped to them for my video hosting it really opened my eyes with how MUCH they actually offer.

Yeah ... I had a lot of videos to host and didn't know where I could do that without big bandwidth charges, etc.

Amazon S3 provided the solution for that problem too. Literally, I get charged a little over $2/mnth for a ton of videos.

But I think most people trust Amazon as much. Doesn't sound like Amazon promoted this much and not many people know about it or have given it a whirl. It would be nice if it served more countries, but certainly an alternative for the countries it does serve.

I wanted to sell on amazon but they won't allow me to use my merchant account, only their own payment solution and that is something I am not comfortable with. Kind of how ebay and paypal are one big monopoly. I no longer sell on ebay with paypal instead I use my merchant account that I got through merchantinc. That has made selling so much easier and no waiting for my money. So when I lookes in to Amazon I couldn't quite figure it out so I emailed them and was told that I can't use my merchant account so then Amazon is out for me. I mean common, give us some options.

What kind of fees do they charge?
Many banks are getting into the electronic payments business ... I know Bank of America is, and I have paid a couple of folks using Chase's "QuickPay" -- (and no fees were taken out. Nice, considering PayPal has upped their fees on the mass pay.)

PS There is also Google Checkout.
PPS Amazon gets listed on the stock exchange as being in the retail sector. That's bogus. They really should be re-classified as a tech company. In fact, it was Henry Blodget's predication that AMZN would hit $400 that set off the dot com boom in the stock market.... (I was daytrading back then .. watched it all unfold.)

Hi Judy, hope things are going well. I found info about fees. How does that compare with what you might have been using?

      Pricing

There are no start-up charges, monthly charges, hidden fees, or long-term contracts. Fees are assessed on a per-transaction basis and vary depending on the transaction amount. They are based on a percentage of the transaction amount plus a per transaction fee.

Volume discounts on processing fees are provided as shown below.
Three month average % of Transaction Per transaction fee
      $100,000 and up 1.90% $0.30
      $10,000 - $100,000 2.20% $0.30
      $3,000 - $10,000 2.50% $0.30
      < $3,000 2.90% $0.30
For transactions less than $10 5.0% + $0.05 for all transactions

      Jeannie

You've pointed out the exact reason why YOU CANNOT compete with PayPal.. they have global market share... and even more then that, they HAVE TRUST.

There are a lot of people (me included) who've had their cc's cancelled, and been told their card number was stolen (Or even literally lost money from a CC theft...) online. A lot of people ARE WARY of what services they use, and so are only comfortable with PayPal.

moreover, any service that doesn't support a vast multittude of countries... (I personally think Amazon payments is a joke, because why would you support UK and germany but not Canada? Just doesn't make sense.. they already have infrastructure here).

Amazon offers this quick pay method to get money direct in your bank, but you need a credit card to verify payments coming to your bank !!!

Also, it takes 8-9 days to clear the payments & get it processed from your Amazon a/c to your own a/c, which is actually not a big deal for sellers today

We have been evaluating different payment processors for the past few months for IMSaurus. The sad reality is that if your company is located outside US, you don't have much choice. There's only few services that offer complete solution like PayPal. There's pretty much only Payza, Merchee and 2Checkout. There's a lot of services that offer services that you can use to bill your customer but you have to get payment gateway separately and that's usually expensive. 2Checkout has a great list for anybody who's interested.

    BTW WARNING ABOUT PAYZA
Payza has this weird chargeback rule - Your account goes to limited status if there's even one chargeback. When you deal with a lot of customers, there's always the one who doesn't feel like contacting you about refund and rather calls the bank... This risk might be acceptable for some merchants but when you have to pay affiliates and members their share every month from the membership fees like we do at IMSaurus, you really, really can't accept the risk that suddenly your account is limited.

All I had to do extra was add my bank account for withdrawals.

As you can see from the screenshot, I chose Simple Pay acct since that's the one that deals with digital goods, but they have two options, depending on your needs.

Is anyone else using Amazon Payments?

Thanks for the information Sbucciarel. Although I've known about Amazon Payments for a while now, I never thought about using it to accept payments. So is the service only for accepting payments on Amazon? Or can you use it to accept payments, for example, for your WSO? Thanks.

I'm definitely going to be checking into this more with Amazon. One of the problems as a web site developer though using a lot of third party applications is that there isn't many of them, yet, adopting the Amazon payment integration.

I haven't tried it for my WSOs. I know it's good for website payments, so probably can use it on a WSO as well, as long as Amazon is cool with that. It was an easy sign-up, but I haven't implemented it yet, as I don't really have any problems with Paypal thus far. I've kind of got it on the back burner as a backup option.

I first heard of Amazon Payment from Chris Brogan. Never used it but I hear it's a great alternative to PayPal.

I didn't know they were offering this service, but its nice to have it in mind as a backup to good ol' PP.
