Hey guys,

Just a quick question, does the actual text on the listing description have any effect on ranking on ebay?

Or is it only the title?

The only reason I ask is because I am going to list a few things and make the whole listing an image file instead of using the listing editor.

Kind regards,
Stephen

Some people search by title AND description. So I wouldn't do it unless you're confident your title covers every possible term.

Thanks for the info, I think I will be fine then as my titles are very targeted for the actual product.

      Regards,
      Stephen.

Both, make sure your listing title is relevant but also has Buzz to it. You WANT people to click on your listing. But make sure you have some keywords in your description as well. I have sold about 200,000 items on ebay. Trust me on this

I would never make my description an image file! When I am on eBay I ALWAYS search title AND description. And I also do research for what keywords people are searching for when searching for my product when selling. I don't know how many bargains I have picked up because someone didn't pay attention when listing their item.

      An example:
I wanted a copy of Dragon naturally speaking but I wanted the one with the blue tooth headset. Retail approx $299. eBay average at the time around $150. I noticed the box had a certain look on it, so when I would do my search, I scanned down the images until I saw the right image and checked the description. While the title didn't say it was bluetooth, the description said something like wireless headset, the picture they took of the box showed it was the Bluetooth one, so I bid and picked it up for $42. As a full time student I was a very happy buyer but I would lay money they were a very unhappy seller!

Also if you check the trends, you might find a keyword people are searching for that generically relates to your product that you can incorporate into your content (description) that might draw another customer from another area (cross-selling). A little gray/black hat SEO but if it results in a sale.

Yes your text in title desciption is very important if you want your listing to be found by buyers. If you go straight to ebay and type in a keyword in search menu it will list by best match first, users can alter the search results by price, ending soonest, newly listed ext, but most all ebay shoppers use the search menu to find exactly what they want and if you do not have your product keyword in title description if will not be seen by as many shoppers. Some shop by category but it is so much easier to just type in what you are looking for.

My titles are highly targeted to the products I will be selling, all i wanted to know is does the description have any bearing.

That is only true if they do not check the box search title and description, otherwise YES, the description does have bearing on search results.

Very simply, if you want more hits, don't use and image for your description, put in some effort into keyword content in the description.
