What's your thought on give away events?

I haven't taken part in a huge amount of give away events thus far, but I've heard it can be a very good way to build your list.

I'm curious to hear from those that have taken part in give away events. How did it pan out for you?

Giving away something of value is BY FAR the easiest way to build a list. So many times I see people saying "Sign up for my newsletter" but nothing more. Why would somebody sign up for something if they aren't getting any value in return?

The quicker IMers learn to "pay it forward" and quit being greedy, they will see things turnaround for them and people will listen to what they have to say. Offer something of value for free and people will be loyal to you if you keep providing good value.

Travis, I'll be curious to see what others have to say, myself...

For myself, I've sworn off of giveaway events, both as a contributor and a consumer.

As a contributor, the events are getting way too big, with too many requirements for promotion to hold a viable position. Unless you are positioned in the top portion of the giveaway, I think you lose a lot of people simply due to 'opt-in fatigue' - people get worn out filling in subscription forms and downloading their stuff.

Same thing as a consumer - way too many people adding packages that you have to opt in for individually, and too much crap created purely to participate. I end up with a folder full of junk and an inbox full of (usually) badly written and targeted promotions from marketers who seem to think that I owe them a purchase because they gave me a flimsy PDF or lame video.

FWIW, my personal experience may be way behind the times, but that's how I see it.
