I think it's one of the most difficult task.

I suggest you check out your competition, see what they are doing and think about ways how to improve it. Then think something new that they don't do, and might be interesting for your users.

But this is just one factor.

You will need content. Lots of interesting topics.

You should get a good forum software as well that offers lots of settings.

At first it's very likely that you will not make any money out of it, but if it takes off it can bring a really good money.

Great tip from frankl - go to your competition and do what they are doing but better.

At first you are going to need to add your own content to the forum, or build a community outside of the forum (such as around a blog, or facebook), unless you are willing to let your forum take ages before it starts moving. I find it much easier to create communities around a forum or facebook page than a forum because people tend to only register in participate in forums that are already active. On the other hand if you transfer an already active community you will have better luck.

As for money, don't expect to make a lot at first (and don't try to monetize it right away because that will scare members away), but you just have to look to this very forum to see how successful one can be.

Creating a successful forum is a really, really difficult task.

Forums used to be 'my thing' so I'll give you a peice of advice.

Q: Do you know how 90% of successful forums started?

A: They all had 5 or more friends actively posting in the forum when it launched.

It's that simple. Real friends posting real threads and real posts about real stuff. This makes a forum popular.

If you don't have friends, or if your friends couldn't care less about joining a forum, then you will find this process a lot more difficult!

The only alternatives are:

- Create a bunch of fake accounts and start talking to yourself in the forum (may require split personality disorder)

- Hire 'forum posters' to be your friends for a while.

Anyway, good luck with it!

p.s. BE PERSISTANT! The biggest forums didn't get popular in the first week, or month, or sometimes even year!

Simple ask Allen says the owner of this forum

It will take time you need to create a base of people who are willing to comment on your forum give them an incentive to comment.

It could be a contest win money, a prize, etc... etc....

You need a lot of content, and lots of traffic too, so it provides value to your visitors.

Then you hope it catches on and the forum posters build the content for you and drive traffic back to your forum.

and how would i go on to advertise my forum and gain traffic

facebook is good but how would i make a community there

do i just add random ppl and see if they are intrested in my forum?

You can use ads on your forum. Or if you offer something valuable you can offer your user to purchase subscriptions.

Basically you advertise your forum like any other websites.

The most important thing in a forum is the members.Do a little research.Do you think that there is only one forum only talking about e.g. relationships?Of course not.When you are to become a member into a relevant forum,you will always see how many members has the speific forum and how many posts have been made so far.

I think you get my point of view here..Concerning the monetization, it might take a while to start meking some money but you have to be patient.More members, will lead to more income...This is how the story goes....

would advertise on other forums or BBSs. That usually gets a lot of attention, especially if your forum is one of only a few.

But again that may either get the hosts of the other forums upset, or they may not care. But usally forums have a section devoted to advertising or promotion of your site.

facebook is good but how would i make a community there

Create a facebook page on your subject, start posting daily links to interesting stuff or making little random posts (I also use Facebook Ads to grow the community at first and start engaging them in conversation). Then start talking about a forum you are creating and eventually send them the link. Continue to work on both communities and they will both grow.

Pay for banner spots on like 3 to 5 sites for a few months that have close to the same nitch as your site

Pay for a few people to post like 250 to 500 post each

Pay for a service that can give 10k+ back links these back links need to be on sites with a min of pr 3 really should pr 4 or better any less than pr 3 they will do nothing for your site

You need to know all aspects of how to keep your forum secure from hackers...
