Fallen Apple: Steve Jobs resigns

Wow, although most people expected it.

Steve Jobs has resigned as chief executive officer of Apple. The company has promoted chief operating officer Tim Cook to the position of CEO and said that Cook will join the company's board of directors. Jobs will become Apple's chairman.

Here is a copy of Jobs' resignation letter:
To the Apple Board of Directors and the Apple Community:

I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple''s CEO, I would be the first to let you know.

Unfortunately, that day has come.

I hereby resign as CEO of Apple. I would like to serve, if the Board sees fit, as Chairman of the Board, director and Apple employee.

As far as my successor goes, I strongly recommend that we execute our succession plan and name Tim Cook as CEO of Apple.

I believe Apple''s brightest and most innovative days are ahead of it. And I look forward to watching and contributing to its success in a new role.

I have made some of the best friends of my life at Apple, and I thank you all for the many years of being able to work alongside you.

I really think, that this will change a lot at apple.
Steve Jobs was and still is the brain of Apple, and from his side came a lot of good ideas. It will continue now with new Iphones, Ipad and the mac books and so on, but i dont really think that they will ever have some kind of these breaking ideas again.

    Thats my thought about that.

I wish him the best and maybe he will come back sometimes. You'll never know.

I think Apple is far too big to be significantly impacted by any one person. I'm sure Jobs will still be intimately involved at least from an unofficial basis. So his ideas should still play a big part in Apple's continued success. He also brought on many talented managers who share his vision. So I wouldn't go selling your Apple stock just yet...

I don't think it's going to effect my business anymore than apple already has. With the latest version of Final Cut Pro being dumbed down to Imovie pro, I'm trying to find a reason to stay with apple on future computer purchases. It's only the investment in other software packages for the mac that keeps me locked in at the moment.

I think we will be switching over to Premiere Pro for our editing but continue to use Final Cut Pro 7 for older projects. As for new machines...we have to do more research.

Apple has finally and fully embraced the masses, that's their target market now. They don't care about the professionals anymore. The good news, this leaves a hole in the market that avid and adobe can and should take advantage of.

I wouldn't expect to see any changes. Marty is right. Job has basically been the Chairman over the past few years due to his health issues.

Even with a different role, Jobs will still be the man @ Apple.

So they fired him, brought him back around 10 years later, and then he resigns. I'm not really surprised. Guy must be tired of the corporate lifestyle.

I'm not an Apple fan. Never owned an Apple product.

I just feel bad for him, as it is obvious that he is very ill.
    {{ DiscussionBoard.errors[4537955].message }}
    • I do own lots of Apple products and Steve Jobs is very ill. People can pretend this is chair-shuffling if they want, but it likely means time is short. Apple has a responsibility to its stockholders to execute a succession plan in an orderly fashion.

      I will miss him terribly.

I've never been a big Apple fan and only just invested in the iPad as a gift to my daughter.

But, he seems to be very ill and I can't imagine what it must have taken to resign.

Anytime there is a change in power, there's a change in staff and other things. It will be interesting to see what happens in the long run.

I want to know what the heck this thread is doing on the Main Discussion Board. It belongs in the Off Topic Forum. It hasn't a darn thing about you or I making money. So a complete waste of time IMO.

Yes, we must move it right away, or anarchy will ensue, and the forum will collapse, and end the interwebs as we know it.

By the way, must not have been too big a waste of time if you saw fit to waste even more time needlessly whining about this thread.

I sold my stock of Apple two weeks ago.

          I'm glad I did.

I'm not saying that the stock is going to drop to 10$ a share. I'm just saying that Steve Jobs was really positioned in the brain of people as the ''genius behind Apple''.

Lots of people are thinking that the stock will go down because of this, thus people are selling their stock.

I' m not sure how much it will go down, but IT WILL go down.

I might buy again when it's low.

          A gross exaggeration?!?

          Well, considering that...
          • Window's original interface was a BLATANT copy of Mac's OSX in the 90s
          • iPhone revolutionized the smart phone industry
          • iTunes and the App Store have been a break-through in how online commerce for music and software will be for the future.
          • The Ipod revolutionized mobile music like nothing's ever done since the Sony Walkman back in the 80s.
          • The iPad pushed a stagnant market (tablets) into world-wide stardom
          • To say nothing about design, which has been copied by every computer, laptop, smart phone or tablet maker in the world.
          • and a loooong etc...
I would say that YES: undoubtedly Apple has printed the lead of the computing world over the last 2 decades.

I don't think it will make much difference at this point. Apple has built up so much momentum and done such a brilliant job at branding itself over the last few years, that it's much bigger than a single individual.

sometimes a change like this is good.

Normally stocks (i.e. stockmarket) go up when this sort of things happens, as it is a new beginning.

I am sure that apple and its products will keep on keeping on.

Very interesting trick too, over the next week its just given apple more advertising and press releases for FREE baby! Yeah! that they couldnt even pay for. Steve, you old scally wag, ....very nice marketing buddy. :-)

    Hi,

The virtue of Steve Jobs is his attention to details that sets Apple apart from other products. Apple needs someone of the same caliber to continue riding the waves.

Apple is now one of the richest company in the world.

Actually, Steve Jobs character has been rather polarizing as head of Apple, NeXT and Pixar, so you could very well argue that Apple could be moving to more common ground in terms of potential realtionships with (perhaps) Adobe, book publishers, even Microsoft and Google... etc.
You mean JV's between Apple, Adobe and MS?? I don't see that happening mate.

And I wasn't joking. The shares were down by 7% already.

The brains behind apple is steve. I lovv apple and own all the products from he mac book mini to the ipad.

Will I ever buy from apple again? Honestly guys. I'm afraid I had to say no. I wasn't buying apple I was buying the guy behind the product.

I follow the markets closely, and I agree that many times the markets are just not rational!

Sometimes it's hard to believe that rational professionals drive the markets, instead of moody kids who act and react under no particular pattern.

Guys I could be totally off base with my assessment of Apple. I'll throw a small disclaimer in and say, I am not certain Apple will fall.

However, you have to remember Steve never named a successor, nor even planned in case he leaves Apple at whatever compacity. No system in place...Steve is the Mcdonalds of Apple, lol.

I am sure you recognize that some people are just rock stars in their given profession, and, they cannot be replaced. It will be interesting to see if Apple can actually rise to the occasion.

    My money says no.

I know there are people currently at Apple who can run it, but, I don't think they have the midas touch, charisma, and, intangibles SJ have.
