The Biggest Obstacle to Success

For me the biggest obstacle when it came to internet marketing was my mindset. The mind is an extremely powerful tool. It took me some time to get into the proper mindset. I had to stop thinking like a customer and start thinking like a marketer.

A customer looks at a product and thinks "If I buy this it'll fix my problem!" A marketer will look at the same product and think "If I sell this, I will make some money." Or better yet the marketer will look for a need in a market and create a product for the customer. Then he will come up with a plan that works and stick with it until he's made money. And then he repeats it. Plan your work and work your plan. I realized early on that I couldn't jump from one program to the next. I had to find something that was tried and true and stick with it no matter how frustrating it got sometimes.

Now, that is not the only part of my mindset I had to change. The other part was the negativity. I had to change from a negative to a positive mindset.

I've heard this quoted many times and I will quote it again: "Whether you think you can do it or not, you're right". When I first heard that it hit me like a ton of bricks. And it's so true. If all you do is point out how something won't work, you will fail every time. On the other hand, if you start to look at things from the perspective of doing what is necessary to be successful, you will begin to see opportunities pop up all over.

If I hadn't changed my perspective I would have given up long ago.

A change in mindset is what I perceive to be one of the biggest hurdles to overcome. I would love to hear what your biggest obstacle to overcome was to get you where you are today.

Oh yeah, another big one for me: Procrastination. But we'll do that one later...

    Another common one is thinking:
You can make money without doing any work...

Just push this shiny magic button...

And money will tumble out of the heavens, burying you in riches...

    Bringing you a beautiful spouse...

I have never met anyone like that. Do people actually think like this? I think it's a myth. The biggest obsticle in success is believing it's possible. Once you believe, all that's left is planning and action.

Naysayers can present a very big obstacle to your success. Whether well meaning or not, those people in your life that tell you to 'be realistic', call your idea 'stupid', or just insist 'people like us never...' can sabotage your efforts.

Avoid them as much as possible, ignore them the rest of the time.

One of the biggest obstacles to success is lack of belief.

    For example:

We fail to believe in the product we are promoting.
We fail to believe we have enough knowledge to create our own product.
We fail to believe that we can actually attract customers.
We fail to believe that we can be successful at Internet Marketing.

Sometimes just being conscious of our belief systems can inspire change.

I have to agree. I think that our underlying beliefs motivate all of our actions, whether we can see them or not. I'm just reading "The Magic of Thinking Big" by David Schwartz. It's an oldie but still pretty good.

"Over the years I have spoken to many people who have failed in business ventures and in various careers. A lot of reasons and excuses for failure have been given. Something especially significant unfolds as you talk with a failure. In a casual sort of way the failure drops a remark like, "To tell the truth, I didn't think it would work," or "I had my misgivings before I even started out," or "Actually, I wasn't too surprised that it didn't work out."

The "Okay - I'll-give-it-a-try-but-I-don't-think-it-will-work" attitude produces failures...

Doubt, disbelief, the subconscious will to fail, the not really wanting to succeed, is responsible for most failures."

Thank you guys for all your responses so far. I knew you would all have something different to contribute.

Matt Morgan- Yes. Those three are also very big ones too. Fear leads to not taking action. Not taking action leads to laziness. Thanks for your input.

tpw- Great point. I think that this way of thinking comes from what people expecting everything on the internet to be easy. Also they expect things on the net to be free and that is always a wrong assumption. Thanks for the response.

Chris Kent- So true. Each person has there own obstacle they need to overcome. Mine was my mindset and procrastination. Some people will relate and some people will search to find their hurdle. Thanks for the reply.

o2webtech- Even in a long period of time! haha Yes, planning is critical to success. Thanks.

Anita- Yeah, that can be discouraging sometimes. Who says normal people like you and me can't make lots of money online? If your friends aren't supportive of your entrepreneurial spirit, find ones that are. Thanks for raising that.

    melltonroper- Also true. Thank you.

Dominique- Thank you so much. This is something I hadn't given much thought to. But so true. Kind of brings it back to the fear aspect. Fear of failure. Thanks for your input.

jeffster- Thank you for dropping those pearls of wisdom. That is so true and I really do believe it. Like I said in my OP, whether you think you can do it or not, you're right. Thanks again.

WSOHelp- I think some people keep looking for the "get-rich-quick-fix" and as a result they chase after the newest shiny object. But you are absolutely right when you say that you have to believe its possible first. Then plan and take action. Thanks for responding.

JSanti7- So very, very true my friend.

Thanks again to all that responded. You all had something terrific to add!

If someone believes that everything should be given for free, then how in the world can they honestly expect anyone to ever pay them for whatever they do.

I think mindset is the biggest. From that, stems people's beliefs.

One of the three most important lessons I have learnt in this caper came from John Reese. I didn't get it at first, but when I did...

Have An Abundance Mindset as opposed to a Scarcity Mindset.

Exactly! That's another thing that ties into my original post. I still have trouble with it at times though. But whenever I start to think there isn't enough internet marketing to go around, I remember how many people are actually online. And how many more are coming online everyday.

This is also true in any other aspect of life. When we start to realize there is MORE than enough to go around for all of us, then we start to see the real opportunities.

I've always said that my earliest obstacle that held me back was trying to perfect everything before I did anything. So basically I would say, "well I can't do this exactly how I WANT to do it yet, so I'll let it sit on the back burner!"

It wasn't until a couple of months later that I finally told myself, "If it's good enough, its good enough."

That is what I like about internet marketing, especially with websites. I can launch today, it may not be perfect, but I can launch it today and get the damn snow ball rolling. Then tomorrow I can come back and change something, or in six months I can alter my traffic generation methods because I learned something new.

With product creation, this is a bit more difficult, but is still doable--especially with many people offering "updates" on simple PDF ebooks.

Fundamentally speaking, this was holding me back more than I could ever explain to any of you. I simply didn't do anything. I wanted to take action, but my fear of it not being "perfect" was detrimental to my early success.

This is why I encourage anyone to jump right in and figure things out. Never used wordpress? I hadn't either... and now I use it for every single website. I was terrified of using it.

Don't know how to generate traffic? Search this very forum to find a free method and work it until you get it right or terribly screw it up. If you screw it up, that's fine, go back to the drawing board and do it again. And again. And Again. Until you get it right.

I didn't "get" a lot of stuff when I first started. I was terrified to build a list, I was terrified to write my first information product, I was terrified to try affiliate marketing because Adsense just seemed "easier."

God knows I've made mistakes, but if I never thought that if its "good enough, its good enough" I'd still be staring blankly at my computer screen frustrated because I couldn't get anything to work--when in reality I never tried out of the fear of my project not ending up perfectly how I wanted it!

Wow! Very good response! All of it, not just what I quoted. This was a big deal for me too. I didn't mention it in my OP because I felt it was getting a bit long. I'm so glad you spoke up with it!

It took me SO LONG to get to the point where I said "This has to be good enough". I kept tweaking little things to make it the most perfect website/product/whatever else out there. I still do sometimes, but I catch myself now and bring my brain back to reality.

I too used to sit in front of my computer staring blankly at what needed to be done thinking one day maybe it will get done.

So the lesson here is, first, take action. Second, PUT A PERIOD TO IT! It's never going to be perfect. Accept it and move on. Thank you again.

Like BloggingPro mentioned, perfection is a success killer. The other thing that really held me back was thinking too far ahead... imagining elaborate systems when I hadn't even launched a report yet. That's probably a branch off perfectionism, but it was a very real problem for me.

... You have to pay your dues and swab the deck before you can be captain.

The other problem was looking to the outside for solutions instead of figuring out where I went wrong. It's far easier to just make a few mistakes and fix them yourself then scouring the internet for answers.

Haha That's a good one, Ansar! I know, we see all the big time guys with these huge systems and naturally that's what we want to achieve. But we have to first be successful with our small operations. Then as we are more and more comfortable we can scale it up. Thanks for your input my friend.

I'll tell you all a secret and it's the number one secret to my success. MINDSET. First off thank you for writing this post. See in this world of internet marketing they give you so much information that it's really hard to sift through what's good and what doesn't work. So we're creating a program that will filter EVERYTHING you know and think you know about getting traffic, placing high in google and being successful overall. I love this community but it's still populated with an abundance of information that has no value maybe put up through good intention. What we've done is... We got 200 dollars and made 2million in 8 months starting from nothing, we ran tests over and over for 2 years and we're almost ready to release this beast. I admire everyone's passion and unfortunately only 2000 of these will be sold because we don't believe in oversaturating an idea. Stay tuned folks it's going to be a very, very rewarding ride. Oh and of course since this will be fresh content we want you to remember is we want you empty handed and leave your expectations at the door. All this talk means nothing without results. I'm going to show you all how.

My biggest obstacle was distractions and information overload. As soon as I cut out the tv as well as other distractions and focused on IM solely, that's when things took off. Especially when I learned how my autoresponder works. That was something that was holding me back and I thought it would be a little too hard to understand but it was actually very easy once I submitted.

Yes sir! It's so easy to get distracted from what you are supposed to be doing. I haven't watched much tv in the last year or so. Definitely not as much as I used to. I've gotten a lot more done! There are other distractions too. Like incessant logging into facebook to check to see if anything has changed in the last 5 mins. haha

Also what you said about finally understanding your autoresponder has another very good lesson. Sometimes we make things out to be more difficult than they really are. But when we finally decide to take the leap in, we find that it wasn't so hard to begin with.

      Thanks for your input.

I think a Big obstacle people run into and causes failure is the Time involved to see actual Success in IM.
I see people who think they can set up a Website, outsource some writers and backlinks and BOOM the money starts rolling in.

Many of these multi-millionaire IMers spent years at it before they hit it Big. And they failed many times in the process

People want it to come big and very fast but it usually does Not work out that way.

Its been 3.5 years for me working on my Blogs ,and I am just approaching $1,000 a month. I look at it as investing for myself and my children for a bright future and good retirement

I think it depends on how you use your time on this forum. When I first started my IM journey I wasn't even a member here... but I did use the search function quite a bit.

I read, and read, and read... and read some more. About anything. I was juicing myself into the industry. Once I had a solid foundation under me I started to venture into individual concepts like Adsense, Affiliate Marketing. Strangely the last thing I ventured into was SEO--and that is what I do for a living now.

That said there are many who are more into the social side of internet marketing, and if that is solely their goal than I am happy for them. However, mostly its a bunch of people stuck without a hallway to walk down. Time management is an important aspect not only in business, but in life.

You only got 24 hours in a day, 6 to 8 of which are going to be sleep. How you use it to further your goals or business is up to you.

I think clarity is a big one, being clear on what your doing and WHY your doing it helps you to find the time and energy to implement what needs to be done in order to succeed. I know that sometimes life gets away on you and you can wind up living your life to fit someone else's plan rather than creating the life you wish to live. I find taking a break sometimes so you can get clear and re-focus often helps.

Yeah, that's a really good point. If someone has a scatterbrained approach to IM (or life for that matter) they will end up very confused and very frustrated.

I think that it's important to have a plan. But not just have a plan. Write it down too. Set goals. Write them down. Even if you can't meet your goals, you are well on you way to becoming more organized and more successful.

Taking a break is also a really good idea. There is too much information out there. If one didn't take a break they'd go INSANE! Plus, when you take a break it gives your mind time to process all the info.

      Thanks for the response.

I think one of the real obstacles to success is the fear of success itself!

After all, this supposedly is going to be such a life changing event - you do think very big, don't you? But are you really prepared for that change?

That is why everything has to be perfect. You need to make constant last minute changes, tweaks, additions, reviews ..... and more. You procrastinate - success can wait a while, I know I'm going to get there, I just need to fix this!

I think most IMers want success, but at the same time fear it. Small success - I can handle that, that would be great. But what if I have HUGE success?
How will I handle all the money I'm making. How about all the new responsibilities that are bound to come my way - and what will they be?
What about taxes? I'll need an attorney, CPA, Financial Advisor and what else? Oh! and my god damn relatives are going to swarm - all with their grubby little hands out!

OK. I may be going over the top a little, but I think you get my drift.

I think the fear of success plays at the subconscious level. We are all driven to succeed without defining what success is for each of us.

The biggest obstacles I've hit on really come down too two things:

    1 - Focus
    2 - Planning

I tend to find myself going from one project to another because I see the next big thing coming in, this year 2011 has been all about getting back my focus and finishing off projects rather than starting new ones.

Planning is a big part of getting focused, without daily direction you'll just spin around in circles going no where and at the end of the day you'll have completed nothing and got no closer to your goals.

Good for you for refocusing your efforts. It's true when we don't have a plan we get so many things going we never finish any of them. Good luck. Plan your work and work you plan, right?

I think the biggest obstacles in IM for me is TAKING ACTION. Follow through till the end!

The one thing that keeps more people from doing what they should...and thereby achieving success is fear. More things are left undone in this world because of fear.

Fear of failure in business is quite prevalent in my estimation and this particular fear extends to other areas in addition to business endeavors.

I think the biggest obstacle is that biologically we are born with a thing called apathy.

When i first started online, I was probably the worst procrastinator.

You know, said I would always write that ebook tomorrow, or set up my autoresponder tomorrow. There we go there is that old biological human make up at work again!

But Soon as i realise I would only make money by getting off my ass, and tryed a few things instead of reading all day, and getting stuck in that 'do it tomorrow' syndrome... I started making really good money.

Then when I realised you can get affiliates to do the work for you, and make money that way easiliy, then I concentrated on that.

Eventually as you evolve as a marketer, you understand how and why you must work smarter and not harder.

But all this is a waist of time if you are not willing to take the first step. That is.....

TAKE ACTION! Do you know why marketers are willing to give you their biggest secrets...because they know, people will not get off their bum and use it.

Actions breeds results, and this is the biggest things to overcome for newbies and even advanced markters.

But as they say, ACTIONS BREED RESULTS!

For me, it's been the legendary "information overload", which, in turn, leads to inaction because you've got all this information lying around in your head, on your hard drive and on the internet that, just deciding or even knowing where to start becomes so intimidating you end up doing what I did a couple of years ago, and that is just running away from the whole IM world altogether!

But, I eventually made a decision as to the direction I should take, and now I'm back and here to stay. So, I may be repeating what others have said, but I think it bears repeating, and that is to pick one method of IM that suits you and your personality and stick with it until you succeed, and, probably most importantly, don't give up until you do succeed.

    Good luck to us all!

Are there really any of you out there making thousands per day. Im doing every program under the sun and have yet to make a dime. Does any of this work or have I just wasted several thousands
Of dollars on promises of inflated click bank accounts and visions of multiple sales every day. Does affiliate marketing really work, or are we just all just throwing our money in a pot and sturring it around?

Lack of focus, lack of motivation, lack of money and lack of time. It could also be the constant drive to perfectionism, procrastination, fear or mere conflicts. All you need to do is decide what you want to achieve in life. Something that you are really passionate about and which does not go against your morals and everything shall for sure fall in place!

Targeted Traffic- Fear of failure can paralyze us from doing what needs to be done. Good point.

builder4580- That's an interesting take. Maybe for some people this is true. I think fear of failure is a bigger thing. At least for many starting out.

celente- I agree with you 100%. Very good contribution. It all come down to action. Taking action to change a mindset. Taking action to learn enough to write an ebook. Taking action to do SOMETHING! BTW, I read your report from the War Room on membership sites. Fantastic!

Tyke- Yep, I know what you mean. There is tons of info out there. Kinda puts one in shock as to where to start. I'm learning new things each day. There are so many good ideas. Some of them make me question if I should be doing "x" instead of "y". I just have to remember, "I have a plan. Stick to the plan". Oh, don't worry about repeating something. Repetition is how we learn.

marvelouz- Take action! Right now. Stop reading this and get to work! lol

seb232- You have yet to make a dime BECAUSE you are doing every program under the sun. You haven't wasted thousands of dollars if you learn from your mistake. It can either be a learning experience or you can continually throw your money at the newest product that comes out. If you want to know the proven way of making money online, here it is for free:
Find a niche. Find a topic to get good at.
Write a short report. Something with valuable info relating to your niche. 4-5 pages. Doesn't need to be fancy.
Buy a domain name and hosting. Something that makes sense for your niche.
Get an autoresponder. Aweber, GetResponse, iContact, etc.
Put up a squeeze page. Give away your report in return for an email address.
Drive targeted traffic to your site. Build a list.
Promote affiliate products to your list. Or create a product to promote and keep all the profits.
Make money! It's that simple. Now you know how it's done. Alternatively, you can find something that works great for you and makes you money and keep repeating that until you're rich. Whatever you decide to do, make a plan and stick to your plan! Don't jump around from one program to the next. Stick with one thing.

BenKJunya- For sure, man! Great contribution.

I agree mindset is the biggest showstopper for most people. It's like starting off the wrong way from the beginning - trying to grow a orange from an apple seed.
