Wordpress / IM - advice wanted

Hi, I am finally getting around to writing blogs to promote my web sites. I have a few web sites that are 1-2 years old and traffic is less than stellar so I'm here learning what I can and taking whatever actions I learn here, to promote my sites.

So first of all I started 2 Wordpress blogs to promote my sites. One is affiliated with my main web site (same root name) and the other is a wordpress blog that points to a site that points to my main site.

My question is, Is this the best practice? I have heard a lot about "rings" and "pyramids" and I thought that starting a couple Wordpress blogs with different names and different content, with one pointing to my main site and one pointing to a site that points to my main site, is a good idea. But now I am wondering "Is this a good idea?" Or will the big G just see through my plan and punish me or at least not reward me for my separate blogs?

Also, should I submit these blogs to search engines, directories, rss feeds, etc.?

What is my best SEO strategry vis a vis using Wordpress? If anyone can give me advice or point me to sites that give me that advice, I'd appreciate it.

Also, is the idea of owning a few different domains/sites that deal with the same subject matter but using mostly-different content (i.e.; the words are not the same, but same ideas), a good idea, when these "other sites" point back to my main site?

It's probably not a good idea to have excessive cross linking between your site and another site, even this one. You may be punished for it, or at the very least, it won't be very effective in terms of link juice. Link juice is not as effective as it once was, and you should probably focus more on writing on your site, and learning on-page SEO. I have noticed that my site jumps up in the rankings when I publish a lot, and if I leave a site, it slips down the rankings. Quality, relevance, regular updates of content. This is probably what Google is looking for, apart from high authority links maybe. Back links are less important than they once were.

Generally what you said is right, but do not put too much time into this inter linking strategy. There are so few sites involved that it won't have big impact.

Better work on getting links from many different sources. Try to get some quality links, too.

Developing your main sites with good content is crucial. Add social media efforts once you feel your main site has good content. It will bring natural backlinks.

Content quality is the ultimate key to search.

Even now, Google has an army of people who are scouring websites and rating them for quality... these results are then fed to into Google's servers which are literally learning how to rate site content.

It's a changing world. Links are great (and are needed) but if you focus on content that is relevant, timely, useful and unique you'll probably find those links are easier to get and better quality.

        Hope that helps!

Backlinks from free blog sites aren't usually seen by google as very valuable links to drive your Google PR up.

Yes, ever expanding content is a good idea, such as installing WordPress on a directory of your site and adding content there.

Also, if you really want some backlinks, go to other blogs and comment...add value to your comments, and in your sig block, add your link back to your site.

In addition, submit at least 1 article a week to article directories, such as ezinearticles.com, and in each article, be sure to have your sig block and link back to your site.

This will slowly, but surely increase your backlinks, as well as provide valuable content to your site, hence, increasing your SE rankings over time.

Thanks to everyone for the opinions and info.

    Questions:
Is there a way then, to make my WordPress blog a page on my site? I was looking into this and I see that Wordpress says something about making your page a subdomain? Is that what it would be, a subdomain, and would have a link like mysite.com/mywordpresssite/wordpress.com?

As I understand it this would be a good thing because it would be giving my site more updates, which google likes. Right?

And my other question is, if I wanted to put a page on my site or my wordpress blog that provided news re my subject matter, can I just list the Titles of the articles from Google Alerts and then the links to those articles re my subject matter. I figure it as a kind of service where people can get all the latest news re this subject... and maybe I could comment underneath some of the articles there as well.

You can simply install a Wordpress blog in a folder on your own site i.e.

      i.e. yoursite.com/blog

It's a standard strategy to make your site more appealing to Google

I don't understand. A Wordpress blog on my site or just a blog? If I install a Wordpress blog don't I have to go through a process of buying the service from Wordpress and then it follows a certain structure which includes a Wordpress name. Not sure what you mean when you say "Wordpress blog in a folder on your own site i.e. yoursite.com/blog".

How do I do that exactly?

If you have cPanel or Fantastico - you can just install Wordpress in a folder on your main site as Tony states above. You then have a blogging platform
It is fairly straightforward - who is your hosting account with?
    Most hosting uses cPanel

Okay, looked at my godaddy hosting and I just went through a process of setting it up there. Not sure I did it the best way so I'll just have to wait and see (it's in a process of "creating database" right now). Thanks for the info, you made me remember that godaddy did have an option for a Wordpress app so I just went there and set it up! Now I just have to wait and see HOW it is set up!
