How do advertisers target banner ads so well?

Hey Warriors,

This one has been puzzling me for a while now and I want in on the action...

I've noticed that many of the BIG mainstream sites I visit always have targeted banner ads for things only I'm interested in. It's like how do they know I'm interested in affiliate marketing? Surely the advertiser is targeting this somehow.

Is there an advertising company out there that helps you place targeted banner ads like this? Or is the advertiser going to each individual site and placing targeted ads that way?

It's quite impressive technology however they are doing it. Hopefully someone will be willing to share this secret with me.

Thanks,

    Cookies.

Some campaigns can be targeted based on your previous web search history, especially the Adwords network. Other's use a retargeting campaign. For example if you visit Aweber.com their ads for services may seem to be "following you around" the internet.

Regardless, it boils down to cookies. Browse with cookies turned off, or private browsing and your ads will seem far less targeted.

You're going to fail. If you're afraid of failure then you do not belong in the Internet Marketing Business. Period.

I don't remember the technical term, but here's what is likely happening...

Edit: BloggingPro was posting at the same time I was. "Retargeting" it is.

You visit a site having something to do with affiliate marketing. That site sets a cookie on your computer.

You surf over to another affiliate related site. Code on that site reads the cookie and loads an ad related to affiliate marketing. Updates the cookie.

You surf looking for a chili recipe. Recipe site reads the cookie, and shows you ads about?

    Yep, affiliate marketing.

I've had those ads follow me through a half dozen unrelated sites, all showing me ads perfectly targeted to the first site I visited.

Yeah I figured they were tracking me by cookies and keywords. But is there a specific advertising network they're using to target these ads or is it all Google Adsense?
