Happy Birthday LINUX!

Today, August 25th, is LINUX's 20th birthday.

CNN published an article about this today which, while entertaining and informative, seemed to ignore the most important thing about LINUX.

At 20, Linux is invisible, ubiquitous - CNN.com

What the article failed to mention is that LINUX is the most common operating system in use today for web servers. In fact virtually all of you who are using shared hosting are using the common LAMP platform - LINUX, Apache, MySQL & PHP.

Without LINUX it is entirely possible that a lot of our industry would not even exist, or if it did it would be a lot smaller. How many of you have shared hosting plans that allow you to run multiple domains for 10 bucks a month (or even less)? Do you realize that the only reason this is possible is due to the use of Open Source products like LINUX? If hosting companies instead had to provide platforms using Microsoft products do you have any idea how expensive that would be for them? How many of you would still be into Internet Marketing if your server costs were a few hundred dollars a month?

So while you may not be using LINUX on your desktop yet (although I have to confess that I am) you still have reason to celebrate the 20th anniversary of this amazing operating system. And if you've ever made even a dollar from one of your websites you have a fellow named Linus Torvalds to thank.

Happy Birthday LINUX!

I agree most people don't realize how important linux is. I was very happy when google decided to use the linux kernel for the android OS and look at it now. Happy to know that today is linux b-day.

I'm definitely a Linux fan since a few months ago when I switched my hosting from Windows Server to Linux. Several more choices that I didn't know existed, or had the need to know until I found out how limited my choices were when I tried expanding my website on a Windows hosted platform.

Now I definitely need to become fully proficient in Linux for my business. That would be lovely. Time to start learning..

While I'd love to agree with that, I really have my doubts - currently it has only 1% of the desktop market.

However I use LINUX on my main workstation (Ubuntu version 11) and totally love it. I have several other computers with different "flavors" of Windows but after using LINUX I find them to be very limited in their abilities. With Ubuntu I have literally built the perfect computer, tailored exactly to my own needs. And I have yet to pay a dime for software.

While it may not ever achieve the market share that Windows (or even OSX) has I prefer to think of those of us using LINUX desktops as the "privileged few", rising to new levels above our poor Mac and PC counterparts.

Not that I'm biased or anything!

People have been saying this for the last 19 3/4 years. Seriously.

You want a Unix desktop, get a Mac.

I wonder if the developer made much money from it. Sad if they didn't.

I have some private connection with this LINUX .....want to know what it is?
    No prob's ..here it is..

In 2006 there was a meeting/big seminar held at Hyderabad, India in HHKB building with Richard Stall men on the topic GENU systems. I have been a member from my school to attend the seminar. It was conducted very big success and one thing I observed is Richard is chipping TEA for every 5 min with a big flask hahaha.

Yeah, on my laptop Ubuntu is the only operating system.

Linux has a lot of pluses, but unfortunately it may be sometimes hard to use for the non-technical crow.

One thing that you really love about Linux is how fast it boots - in just a few seconds you are ready to go!
