Pointers Needed: Selling Used Books on Amazon

Hey Fellow Warriors,

I just recently moved into an apartment with my fiancee, and I realized I have waaay more books than the average person. After seeing my bookshelves fill up and I still had piles of books, I felt like I should be on an episode of 'Hoarders: Books Edition'.

I've decided to start selling the majority of them on Amazon, and I was wondering who had some great pointers on getting used books sold quickly at a a great price.

These are actual books I'm selling in the Amazon Marketplace, not Kindle ebooks.

Thanks!

Woody

  • The best most cost-effective and profitable way to sell books on Amazon is FBA. (Fulfillment by Amazon)

You need to check your books to see what they're worth, though. Every book seller starts out selling their own books -- only about 20% of mine were worth putting up on Amazon. Best sellers, nearly all popular fiction, old reference works, etc. are worthless.

Amazon is home of the "penny book." You'll soon find out what that means.

It'll cost you $39.99 a month for the Pro subscription, which you have to have to use FBA. You get paid for your sales every two weeks.

I sell books, toys, games and jewelry on Amazon FBA.

Thank you for the advice, fLufF.

I haven't used FBA for the books that I have posted so far. I will look into it, though.

Most of my books are non-fiction. A lot of health and wealth books.

They are all in excellent shape, so what I'm doing is finding the cheapest "Like New" used book in the marketplace and beating their price by a few cents.

I wasn't sure about the $39.99/mth because I probably have ~100 books I'll put up, but who knows if they'll sell in the next month. I don't really plan on making this a business, but just making some money for my wedding expenses and clearing out some space.

    Thanks again for the advice.

    • I started out on the 99 cent per item fee plan and fulfilling orders myself, because I wasn't sure how it would go. That lasted about a month. You can convert to the Pro Merchant subscription at any time.

There are really only two condition types on Amazon for books: New and Used. Anything that has ever been opened, thumbed through, has shelf wear or differs in any way from a book fresh out of the shipping box from the publisher is used. Some sellers try to fudge Used into New (the price differences can be dramatic) but you risk refunds and complaints.

If, like me, you're the person who never buys the book on the top of the stack because it isn't in pristine condition, you know exactly what Amazon means by New.
