Yeah more money is a bonus. Plus the lack of outgoing costs. No petrol or travelling costs, no having to buy lunch each day etc.

I enjoy making more money in a day than I used to earn in a week at most of the jobs I've had in the past. The commute is much shorter and I never have to wonder where I'm gonna' have lunch.

    • There are lots of things I enjoy when I'm working at home....

Having a fully-stocked kitchen close at hand and not having to go out for lunch or coffee.

Not having to share a bathroom with other women. Sorry, ladies, but there are a few of you who are pigs in public facilities.

Productive breaks. Start a load of laundry, unload the dishwasher, scoop the litterbox, all kinds of mindless stuff that gets me away from the computer and thinking about goals.

Not having to keep the music or video turned down.

The freedom to go upstairs and take a nap without having to drive 20 minutes to get home (and worrying about falling asleep on the way).

The choice of whether or not to go TO the office.

      Keeping the felines company.

Segging right up to the counter at the post office and handing over the outgoing mail.

Your statement about getting weekends and holidays off says a lot about what you think of work. For some of us work IS our weekend, holiday, Christmas all wrapped up in one.

It is NOT something to be avoided. For us saying you have weekends off from work is like saying oh 2 days a week I do not HAVE to go boating, to the beach, eating and drinking out etc.

To us work IS a reward and something we prefer to do.

We would never want to avoid work when it is the most pleasurable pastime we do AND make a bunch of money doing it.

For me personally I can barely stand even getting dressed and brushing my teeth before turning on the computer to start work and see what new emails, orders etc have come in over night.

Your thoughts about work is why you probably will never understand the way some of us think, act and live.

Totally agree with this one. Especially being pregnant public bathrooms are the worst when you have morning sickness and having a toilet closeby helps a lot!!!

I get so much more done around the house and have time to focus on my work too.

Yeah the isolation is a total killer. I miss just chatting to people and socializing. But it does make it easier to schedule in coffee appointments with friends, and take days off to see family etc when I want not when I can get the time off work.

These are my 10 favorite things about working at home.

      1. I can make my own hours.

      2. I can attend to emergencies without having to "ask" for time off.

      3. I don't have to drive on the parkway or other highway and battle traffic
      to get to work.

      4. I don't have a boss telling me what to do.

      5. I can work on various projects so that I don't get bored doing the same
thing day after day like at most jobs.

      6. I can claim items as expenses that I couldn't claim working for a boss.

      7. I can watch TV or listen to music while I work.

      8. I save lots of money on things like gas and eating out.

      9. My car lasts a lot longer not driving so much.

      10. I can come to the greatest forum in the world, any time I like, and
      answer questions like these.

    - Being able to pick up a guitar any time I wish throughout the day, to fire off a few licks.

    - Being able to stuff my face whenever I please (i.e. all of the time).

    - I can drink whilst I work and no-one knows/suspects anything (except when I come here and make like a bazillion spelling errors because I can't see straight ).

    - I like working alone; never much enjoyed working with people whom I have no say over, and wouldn't have exactly paired up with voluntarily.

All of this probably makes me sound a bit immature and undisciplined. I suppose it's true: but I'm allowed to be that, too.

I agree with you BabyMama. Being preggers too it's really nice that I can take a break in the middle of the day and take a nap when my body needs it. I also love being at home with my little boy and feeling like I'm more actively involved in raising him vs dropping him off at the babysitter (even though I did have an amazing babysitter when I was working at an office).

Of course, like Dan said, that ability to call my own breaks is my undoing at times too. I've had to really think about my day and schedule times when I can be dedicated to "work" even though I'm at home w/total flexibility. But I'm getting better at it & striking a good balance - love that!

The time and money we have saved is no small part of it - to be sure! So is the freedom to choose when, where, and how you work. But seriously, what excites me the most and keeps me "motivated" is getting paid over and over and over for the time and effort I put into creating my own products. That income will continue coming in regardless of whether I'm working on a new project or taking a few years off.

I enjoy the "so-called" freedom I say "so-called" because if you don't watch out that freedom can turn into bondage.

I love the flexibility as well. I went out the other day about 11:30am and the post office was packed so I left, I was trying to sneak and get a super sized french fry so my wife wouldn't know and the drive through was too long so I left. I kept thinking to myself "What the H*** is going on? Don't these people have jobs to go to?" Then I realized it was lunch time. I hadn't been out in the streets at that time in a long time.

That was a revelation! No I just have to work on more automation.

My favorite things about working from home is not having to spend 3 hours a day driving to a job anymore, getting to sleep in, getting a lot more work done, saving money on gas, getting to take breaks to watch movies, having flexible hours, rarely having to wear shoes anymore, getting to meet up with friends and clients for lunch, being able to go out and run errands, get to enjoy beautiful Los Angeles weather, never having to deal with office drama...

I work from home, but have a real day job: I do call center work, doing tech support. I AM an employee and get a regular paycheck. (I'm just coming out of a season of extended unemployment and don't yet make a regular income online.)

So I have a boss and regular hours.

But I am SO THANKFUL to work from home! I have some physical problems which inhibit my mobility and make it difficult for me to go into an office on a regular basis, especially if I'm not feeling well.

I just finished the initial 6 weeks of training and had to drive down to Ft. Lauderdale every day. I HATED every minute of it.

What do I love about working from home?

        1. NO COMMUTE! (1 hr each way, which meant I left 1 1/2 hrs ahead of time to account for traffic on I-95.)

        2. No get-ready morning routine. Since I have some physical problems, I have to soak in the tub each day and so my get-ready routine is 2 hrs. I can jam it into 1 1/2 hrs or if I REALLY hurry, into 1 hour. (But that means no soaking in the tub, which isn't good for my skin.)

The 1/hr-each-way commute plus 2 hr-get-ready routine, plus the lunch hour means I have 5 (count 'em: FIVE!) more hours in my day.

        3. More sleep! No getting up at a ridiculous hour or getting home at a ridiculous hour.

        4. Huge savings in gas for my car. (Not to mention the wear and tear on my car!)

        5. Huge savings on meals out.

        6. My comfortable, peaceful environment! I love my house and generally have music playing (low) and candles burning. We've been remodeling and are now moving into decorating, so things are slowly shaping up.

It's lovely and so peaceful, a HUGE change from the office environment. (The building wasn't great and the room I was in smelled of mold. Yuck! I think it was in the ventilation system.)

        7. I can do little, personal things on my breaks: eat, get something to drink, put a load in the wash, etc.

        8. I can conduct BUSINESS during business hours.

I work a split shift, working 9 AM - 1 PM and then 6 PM -10 PM. (I've never worked a split shift before. But customer service generally isn't a 9-6 or 8-5 job.)

This is HUGE for me. One of my pet peeves with my previous job was my inability to conduct any BUSINESS during business hours because I had a day job. Drove me CRAZY! Yes, I had flex time benefits, but that covers the occassional doc appointment, personal issue (like your car breaking down), etc. I didn't have regular, consistent time off during the business day.

Now I do. This means I can do errands or even do business stuff (hold meetings, conduct a conference call/teleseminar, etc.) DURING BUSINESS HOURS. Yay!

Initially I thought I'd HATE working a split shift, but the more I think about it, the more I like it. If you're just starting IM or don't yet have enough income to live off of, then you probably have to have a day job. Trouble is, it leaves little time for building a biz and you generally have to do it in off hours. IM is wonderful in it's flexibility and allowing you to do it in off hours, but it's still difficult when you NEED to do things during business hours (meetings, teleseminars, etc.).

But either way, you're working a LOT of hours (day job plus biz). My new job schedule just shifts those hours around and give me time during the BUSINESS day to conduct business. Yay!

My split shift also injects discipline into my schedule. I HAVE to get up in time to start work at 9 AM. No staying up all night and sleeping all day. (I'm a huge night owl and can easily get my days and nights turned around in 1 day flat.)

        9. I can take a nap during my 5-hr break.

Basically, I like the FLEXIBILITY of my schedule. The traditional 8-hr (9 hrs with a lunch hr) day/commute/go-to-the-office doesn't work well for me. Because of some physical problems, I really need flexibility in my day and little or no commute. Now if my feet and legs blister and swell to the point that I can't walk (yes, it happens sometimes), it probably won't affect my dependability at work (which is key to KEEPING my job).

        10. I can play with my cat.

        11. I can have my purse and phone nearby.

Yes, seriously! My new employer makes employees leave their cell phones in their car or check them with security. No cell phones on premises! Since my cell phone is officially an extension of my hand, this was a problem.

They also make their female employees lock their purse in their car or lock them in a locker on premises. No purses, bags or other small cases (like zippered makeup bags and such) allowed.

I had a SERIOUS problem with both of these issues. I'm 35, a professional woman who knows how to behave professionally. Such rules (plus the people and environment) made me feel like a high school kid in a bad inner city school. It was insulting.

I also INTENSELY disliked having to put my stuff through the X-ray machine and step through a metal detector every time I entered or left the building. That tells you something about the type of people they had working there and the environment, though.

My safety is important though, so I'd rather have it than not. But I feel safer at home. AND I'm glad not to have to be around some weird types of people. (It's a large company with a LOT of people.) As a single, white woman with some physical problems, there are just certain types of people I choose not to be around. Though I never felt actually threatened during my training, it was still uncomfortable there.

That's what I love about working from home. Now we'll see if I'm disciplined enough and savvy enough to get this biz off the ground. Then I can brag about having no boss and working from my laptop in Switzerland.

I can work with my own time and there are no hassles from traffic going to the office. Work-time is flexible and I can set my own time with my work and my time for my family. I can spend time at home with my family and at the same time, I am earning more money.
Moreover, there are no alarms in the morning that is irritating and disturbing; there is no traffic to the office; no rush hour; no cruel or rude boss around watching your movement; and most specially, no salary deductions when absent because of fever or not feeling well.
Even if you aren't feeling well, you can just sit in front of your computer and continue to work from your IM business.

The word that keeps coming to mind is "Freedom" ...

Freedom to work at 2 am, if I want to

Freedom to take a break when I want to

Freedom to listen to music if I want to

Freedom to watch my favorite show if I want to

Freedom to work more hours or less hours or go on a road trip if I get the urge to

A lot of stuff make it my favorite to work from home, not thinking about what to wear to the office, avoiding the traffic jams, not having to wake up in the wee hours of the morning so you can catch the bus and be on time for work. . . but the best thing is having to be beside my 7 month old kid and have to watch him play while I work would be the best ever benefit I have with working from home. . . it's all about family.

A lot of people say the best thing about running your own business online is that you can set your own hours. I only partly agree with this because in a lot of cases, you are running to other peoples schedules. While I might be able to work my own hours, getting up at 3AM to chair a worldwide meeting is not necessarily something I would choose to do under normal circumstances.

I don't work from home right now, but when I did I enjoyed being able to sleep in. I absolutely hate getting up before I'm ready to. It has nothing to do with time. But having to wake up at 8 every day makes me grumpy and tired. Some days I might wake up at 7, while others I might not wake until 1 PM! It depends on what my body needs, and sticking to a schedule where I wake up at the same time every day is not doing me any favors.

I LOVE the fact I can go to sleep only when I'm tired (sometimes I stay up for days!) and when I sleep, not having to wake up until I'm fully rested which is usually at the "crack of noon". I used to be a welder and you though waking up at 8am is bad? Try getting up at 5:30 to be at work by 7am just in time to walk into a freezing factory (often colder than outside because the steel absorbs any latent heat) and eating a mouthful of sparks and ear shattering sledge hammer blows with no warning.

Work sucked for me - 99% of the time (sometimes it was a laugh - but rarely). I ran out of the normal life at the earliest and first opportunity and I'll never go back.

    Many reasons...
    1. No boss !!
    2. No pre-defined work hours, work when you feel like or don't work, your choice.
    3. Once you start getting paid, you can make tens. if not hundreds or thousands, with very little effort
    4. No office travelling time.
    5. No dress code.
    6. One can do different kinds of work simultaneously with ease.
    7. Can work while smoking, or drinking
    8. If/Once you are successful, you can party all the time without any tension of any kind.
    9. You have more time for yourself, your family and your friends.
    10. You can take up a day job too, and that too, just for fun

Nice topic. I'd have to say what I love most about working from home is that my time is my own.

I don't have to answer to anyone or report to work at a certain time.

I wake up when I open my eyes.

I can choose to not work one day.

I can stop working at a moment's notice and spend time with my family.

    I control my customer service.

There's a lot that can be said about working from home. And unless you have ever had your own business you don't know the freedom.

Working at home is cool, but for every positive I see a flip side negative too...why do people that work at home usually ignore the negatives? I work a normal job, but don't boast about only the advantages (there are some). I'll give some examples based on responses above:

"I can choose to not work one day."

Response: I can too, it's called vacation or sick leave (yes, I still get paid for these).

"Not hating reality..not slaving away for peanuts."

Response: I love my job...don't slave away (40 hours a week) and don't make "peanuts". Just because one person makes peanuts at a day job, don't assume everyone does.

"Once you start getting paid, you can make tens. if not hundreds or thousands, with very little effort"

Response: Should I even comment on this one? What BS!!

Just wondering, what do you guys do for health insurance? Retirement? I guess no one "matches" you.

With all honesty, its all about realizing the fact that I don't have to wake up 5 in the morning and go to work for 12 hours a day and listen to some under graduated grumpy manager giving me crap. I like being my own boss and not having anyone telling me what to do. But without me going through all of that, I wouldn't be working from home. So thank you hard labor. I agree with Chris that you have to be careful about the blur between "work" and the rest of your life.

Absolutely, the greatest thing is to work at your own pace on "your own schedule".

But notice... to succeed, you do need a schedule. Otherwise you end up in some blackhole or something.

You might want to check out a really cool thing called the "pomodoro technique". It helps you chunk your time so that you really can create a clear separation of "work" versus the rest of your day. Frees up your mind to enjoy your "time off" more than if you have to always feel guilty that you should be working. There's nothing to buy with the technique. I think it's pomodorotechnique dot com. There is an ebook explaining the system in detail. Download it for free right from the sight. There are even little pomodoro timers you can put on your computer (also free) to keep you tracking your time precisely. In fact... I'm working through a pomodoro right now with my timer in the background.

Enjoy your life working at home! It's great. And I think it's great that mom's can spend time home raising their kids instead of outsourcing the job!

IMO untrue about needing a schedule.

People need to understand what has worked for them in the past and repeat that. I am HORRIBLE at keeping a schedule in other parts of my life and doomed me to failure when I tried to do that while working at home.

When I changed to NOT having a schedule is when I started having more success than ever before.

Bottom line if you found out that you could lose weight by having a set schedule then do that for your work. If not then don't have a schedule.

Do what worked for you in the past.

Unfortunately I have found them to be a little too distracting so even though I can work from I choose not.

Not having a boss is awesome! And the traffic isn't that good either. I think the best thing about working from home is the freedom. You can do what you want if you are making a good income. You want some starbucks coffee? You may go and don't ask permission, or want to go the Barnes and Noble and that's cool to read the latest books. You can sleep late and wake up late. It's really cool. I think that is the real taste of freedom and if you are ambitious you want to more of that and you work smarter to make more money on the internet. Working from home is awesome for the freedom it can provide you.

I have this time management system where I work for 45 min then I take a 15 min break.

I learnt it as a study technique many years ago, it works a treat and keeps me focused. It works so well that my grades went up so I was the top 5 in the class at Uni, mainly because I was getting through the work.

On the 15 minute break I find I recharge if I do something physical as I've just spent 45 minutes sitting at the computer.

Working from home and taking a 15 min break allows me to get a lot of small jobs and clean up around the place.

A cheap $10 kitchen timer helps keep the time, I used to use the mobile phone but I lost track of time when makign and receiving calls.
