Help with Wordpress 2.7 - Themes?

I bit the bullet and got started with WP 2.7 last night...no big deal but...

How in the H*ll do you upload a theme? In old wordpress I just browsed and clicked on the file and wala.

I clicked appearance>themes and it shows me the drab ones and tells me to upload to my wordpress>content>themes file. Do I have to FTP everytime I want to see a new theme?

    Hi Steve,

Yes you do in fact have to upload a theme file from your folder to the wp->themes folder. via a FTP program.

Make sure you unzip it first.

Once uploaded, you should be able to select the new theme once logged back in to your admin area or upon refreshing.

That should be all you need to do.

    Regards,

    Kevin

    Hey,

I just did a quick google search and found something you might like.

It's a plugin you install (can use WP 2.7's upload plugin feature) and that will let you upload themes and plugins from the dashboard.

I'm not sure if it works with 2.7, but it's worth a shot so you don't have to always mess around with FTP!

I was using 'One Click Install' with WP 2.6 and all I had to do was browse for the zipped file on my laptop, click load and there it was. Maybe it will work with 2.7.

What a lame a*s thing to do, make it easier to upload plugins and harder to load files. What the heck were they thinking?

Plug Ins work that simply ... natively in 2.7.

Dashboard | Plugins | Add New | Browse your desktop for the ZIP ... hit go.... activate plug in. Set it up. Done

Themes Im not so sure. gotta FTP the unzipped file[s] into the themes file on the webserver. I dont recall 2.6 being able to do themes the same way it did plug ins - but I wasnt on 2.6 very long at all.

      YMMV

        Hi Steve

        You're right

The new 2.7 makes it a doddle to add in plugins but not themes.

The best way is to go into dashboard => appearance, scroll right to the bottom and link into themes directory.

I'm afraid there is no other way within the dashboard to do it as yet.

Another easy way is just go into wordpress.org site itself hit the extend tab and then hit the Themes directory tab.

What I do is just browse what I like - download a whole lot of zip files, extract, upload into the wp-contents folder, themes and activate.

However be warned - as I discovered in doing my videos on this that some of the themes don't work on 2.7 that worked on 2.6 so it's a good idea to download, ftp and check.

        I hope this helps

        Regards

        Peter

Check out this plugin, ø Single Click Plugin Updater WordPress Plugin | W-Shadow.com ø

It works with version 2.7 and you can use it to upload plugins and themes like OneClick did. I don't like it for its main purpose to upgrade plugins because it fails to do it on a lot of servers. If you can't upgrade plugins after you active it either deactivate it when you don't need it to upload themes and plugins or configure it to use the core WordPress upgrade.

I just started building my first wordpress site a couple of days ago - I have to say that after I've got my head round it I'm really impressed.

Was wondering about the template upload myself as I just ftp'd so far - but was quite simple to do anyhow. Will look out for the suggested plugin - thanks for asking the question

I guess I'll just check out the themes at my testsite and then only FTP the one(s) I want to the new blog. It's not a big deal, just a stupid step backwards if you ask me. Some people aren't that comfortable with FTP.

Just something else to unzip and take up space on my harddrive.
