Should I use existing domain?

I have a product site that sells only iPhone apps. Its domain has a page rank of 2. The domain age is 14 years. I've always depended on iTunes for marketing but I'd like to use the site to drive additional traffic/purchases into iTunes.

For this one app, I was thinking of registering a new domain name with the keywords in it and backlink to product site. The exact domain is taken so I would append "helper" to it.

My question is, should I use the existing domain and take advantage of its PR and domain age? I'm sure with creating good backlinks, I can increase the PR. I would use something like mysite_com/herearemykeywordshelper (underscore is for dot) so the keywords are in the url. I've seen lots of sites that are in the top position for keywords results and don't even have those keywords in their url. But I want to do what ever will have best results.

Domain age of 14 is nice but PR of 2 is not something to show off. With a domain that is that old having a PR of only 2 is not so good.

If the site has only 3 pages and not new content that is understandable but if it is a little more than that and at least some content added over the years the site should have a higher PR. A PR of 3 is the what you can expect of an older site that is not too good but not penalized either.

I would not bother about that domain and would build a new site with a keyword domain instead.

Thanks. I haven't done any SEO on the older site and it has only a hand full of pages.

I'll go with the new site.

I'd recommend a new site with a keyword rich domain relevant to your iPhone apps product site. Google loves domains with exact KW match, which may give you a heads up over the competitors there.

From there I'd make the new site as focused on your product & apps as possible. You can still cross promote on the existing site that is related.

You need a serious SEO for that domain, 14 years old of age is great, but it sounds the last SEO work was done for it was 12 years ago.

I would suggest to invest enough money and time on bringing it up (domain with that age can jump up faster).
