Has anyone ever tried paying to get their site at the top of the list for Search Engine results?

I have always been very leary about this, especially with outside companies that claim they can do this. I wonder how an outside company can control how Google ranks sites? How can they make Google and other Search Engines rank my site higher.

If you have ever tried doing this, what kind of results did you have?

Thanks.

Don't bother paying. Spend some time and learn SEO yourself. Start small in low competitive keywords and move up as you become more and more confident.

People go about making SEO this mystical thing when in actuality it isn't. In fact, SEO is one of the few internet marketing techniques that has a working AND viable blueprint. The only thing that gets in people's way is themselves.

Don't do it. Most of the time, you'll end up getting sandboxed or blacklisted by Google. Build backlinks slowly and naturally.

All the good search engines worth sending you traffic, will never charge you money! that includes google, yahoo, msn and more...
so i suggest you not to spend money! Period.

I've heard of someone doing this, yeah, it didn't turn out very good. It broke them, litterally and figurativly. This person had to give up a lot of money on very little result. I agree with everyone else. Stick to seo stuff. Find some really great keywords and go with them. This works better than anything I've seen so far.

Don't pay for something that you can do just as easily and make more money for other areas of marketing.

Yes I have and it was a total waste of money. I paid $300 for that campaign and only got 2 sales.

Besides, no one can 'guarantee' you'll get top placement unless you find keywords that have absolutely no competition. And even then, you can easily get placement just by writing a couple of Ezine articles.
