Help! I'm a hoarder of good stuff.

My hoarding takes place on my computer. I have tons of downloads and text items that I have collected. Most after reading, I can't bear to part with because I am sure I will need to refer to them again. Unfortunately, there is so much on my desktop and in my files that I don't even know what I have. Any good organizing solutions for this?
Thanks.

    Kate,

I see that you're a War Room member. I remember seeing some free software to help with your dilemma (desktop organization).

Here's the thread and free resource:

    Hope this helps a little!

It's only useful if you are actually reading and implementing the information. If you aren't, it's just a digital landfill you're creating.

I do have a bit of a landfill but most of it I have read and am using the info. I keep it because I tend to want to go back to it for reference or to check if I've missed something.

Hahaha I am the exact same way. I have thousands of tools, ebooks, videos etc on mine. I try to keep them all organized into their own specific folders on my hard drive but its still a pain. Funny enough, I haven't even read or used half of them...pretty typical from what I understand

Best tip I could give you is make a folder called archives.

      Then inside make folders called:

      jan 2011
      feb 2011
      mar 2011
      etc.

Keep the new stuff in that months folder.

At least then you will know what is your NEW good stuff.

      Durant,

Then I would say that "you've got some gold" on your hard drive, meaning don't forget to back your stuff up, OR you'll be sorry that you didn't if your hard drive crashes!

      Just a say'n

I double approve backing it up. My computer crashed and some hard work by the repair tech was able to save my stuff. What a relief that was to get it back.

For the most part, I like printing out the product itself. At the end
of the month, I put them all into an archive file for the month - It
definitely helps when I am looking for something to refer back and
    start reading it once again.

    You are doomed!

There is no cure, only organize or organize not.

I have a similar disease, so I feel you. I use a nifty little program that I downloaded (yes, another download) at

Stardock Corporation - Software - Fences

to at least help organize my icons on my desktop. It's a start toward recovery... or at least control.

It's not enough to want it... you have to want it enough.

I have my fair share of downloads but I manage to keep it neat and organized so it doesn't get in the way of what I need to do. Basically I keep it in a separate hard drive and in their own categorized folders for example:

Guides & Books - essentially all of my learning materials
      Graphics
      Templates
      Software
      PLR

Very broad categories but I know what folder it is in if I'm looking for it.

I have a nifty little program called Everything search (Everything Search Engine). Free and EXTREMELY fast for finding files. It doesn't index content but you could use Google Desktop Search as recommended by other Warriors.

I have learned to just get rid of things that I haven't used in a long time (6 months to a year or so). I do this with most things in my house and on my computer. I just don't like stuff sitting around and if I don't touch something for that long...chances are very good I'm not going to need it down the road.

      Hope this helps!

    LOL @ people here...

I have seen and read most ebooks or products in other format in IM niche.

Most ebooks are like more than 50 pages long. And some audios and videos can stretch to more than an hour long.

And guess what? Most of them are crap.
