13 Year Old Domain - PR O - Seo Thoughts?

My partner and I picked up a great 13 year old domain and are planning on using it as an additional site, purely for organic rankings.

My question, is how hard can we push it with back links? Should we be safe and hire an seo company with a litany of clean, high pr blogs that will link back to us, at least in the beginning? Or should we just go balls to the wall?

It's a semi-competitive space, some pr 3 and 4 websites, but most are fairly weak.

Any and all ideas are helpful. Despite just registering, I'm a seasoned eCommerce player, just really want to get some thoughts on how to handle such an aged domain...usually, I start off with fresh ones.

Yes being 13 years old does give you an advantage, you can start with strong links straight away, I would recommend contextual links on high page rank pages, and throw some bookmarks/press releases/blog comments in for good measure.

To start off with the right foot, you should do a Press Release for your site. The next day, do social bookmarking for your Press Releases.

Next, submit BMR articles and get high PR backlinks. Throw in both no-follow and do-follow. Although no-follow doesn't provide as much link juice, it will be able to make your backlinking look more natural to google.

On my website, Marketing Survival Kit.com, I've created a list of "link building links" that includes article submission sites, press release sites, directories, and do-follow (and CommenLuv) blogs and forums -- although some of them are "no follow". When you're doing a link building campaign, it really helps to have some lists and guidelines to refer to, or else you could spend a lot of time spinning your wheels.

I could image the difference in link bearing capability in greater between a 0 and 6 month old domain than a 6 month and 13 year old domain.

I suspect the search engines may rely on the continuity of a site's indexing history more than the whois creation date, if the pages of a site vanish or are replaced by a parked directory, then it suddenly has all new content, they may recognize these as signals of a new beginning and treat it more like a new site.

In the early days when many sites were older than the search engines, they had to rely more on any records they could find outside of their own logs, like the whois data.

i personally buy 5yr old domains and blast the **** out of them with links resulting in higher PR. Its also extremely hard to sandbox aged domains, In fact ive yet to be sandboxed and all I do is blast... So go for it.
