I recently read the viral loop book (VERY interesting, exciting and inspirational read), which talks about viral marketing and according to that book, PayPal has reached the point of non-displacement long ago and is not going to be replaced.

BTW I absolutely recommend getting that book (NOT an affiliate link, I simply loved it)

edit: can't post links just yet, never mind, you can find it at amazon, it's "Viral Loop: The Power of Pass-It-On" by Adam Penenberg

Thank You. I made a post here a couple of days back about this. I want to see that competition shake paypal up. And who said that paypal has reach the point of no displacement... I thought the law of physics said that whatever goes up must surely come down-- GRAVITY!

It may take some time but they can be displaced.

And as soon as PayPal believes that, they will be on the downward spiral. Any business, regardless of size, can come crashing down. And the bigger they are, the harder they fall.

When a PayPal competitor gets a large enough market share to be recognized by the majority of the population, vendors will find it easy to get their customers to use the alternate payment processor. Then it becomes a matter of which processor will serve the market the best. PayPal doesn't have to be toppled - it just has to move over.

Yup I totally agree with you Gene. Paypal just need to move over and they also stop freezing someone's account without any explanations. However let's see what Noca have to offer us

Never say never, and saying definitively that Paypal will never be displaced is taking it just a little too far, in my opinion.

I'm sure HP, Yahoo and AOL never thought they'd sink to where they are today, look how far the great have fallen. It is when you're at your highest point that you're also very vulnerable to outside threats and competitors, so this is why I hesitate to think of Paypal as being impregnable.

They call themselves the Paypal alternative. Quite good service. I have been using them for about 8 months now with no issue whatsoever.

I bet you never withdrawed any money out from them.

I know 4 people who made their softwares online shop with SWREG.

After they sold for about 2,000 $, NONE of them EVER got paid.

SWREG are scammers and thiefs. They simply do not pay out.

That's why they entice you with such low percent "fees"

Because they keep 100.00 %of your money.

They never paid anything to anyone I know.

SWREG is just one big fat scam.

Competition is great and there are quite a few alternatives to Paypal. The biggest problem I see as a merchant is that most customers use Paypal. So, until the Paypal market share drops way down Paypal will continue to dominate.

Yes, there are plenty of alternatives to PayPal. The problem is that most people use them. Getting people to sway from something they have had for years will take time.

However, it might be worth signing-up for a new place and see what happens. Unfortunately it could take years to see any type of swing.

They are, but their services to a buyer/seller are less than great. I would not put them anywhere near PayPal for quality of service.

That is good to know. I like having options, and this might help PayPal in knowing it is not the only reliable choice in the game anymore.

I might be behind on the news but I just got something in my email today about Amazon Payments. They allow you to send money via email just like PayPal. It was the first I'd heard of it and I thought it was pretty cool.

Amazon payments has been around for quite sometime now. I have used it once, it is exactly like paypal and is a lot more flexible. I am not sure why they don't market the product though.

I am sure they do the same kind of risk analysis like paypal does. At least I hope they don't freeze your accounts for no reason. And they are a retail company and know how much a good promotion can impact your sales. Anyway, that is one option.

The other option is to get merchant accounts from different providers and run your payments directly.

PayPal always had competitors like AlertPay, Money Bookers, Liberty Reserve, Perfectmoney, and so on, just to name a few. So the online payments market isn't using solely PP for payments, even so it is the dominant and most used payment processor.

I think that it is too early to say that this company will prove itself as being a fair competitor of PayPal, however with the right strategy and proper budget nothing is impossible.
I see that they do not have as high fees as PayPal has, this factor alone can be appealing to lots of internet users, especially for those who make a large amount of transactions online.

im pi***d off with paypal right now, i sold 30 of my health and fitness dvds with resell rights to a guy in huddersfield uk, he got the discs within the week, from my distributor and i was in a transitional period at the time and was having an extension built at home and as he was on holiday for 4 weeks he told me to take my time to finish of designing the new covers which i do for my customer. he got back but because i was a bit delayed, it took me a bit longer than i planned. he paid £300 and he put in a dispute saying he hadnt got everything he bought.he has all the designs uploaded for him to download and he has his licence, but without me knowing he added 5 dvds to his licence.he's wanting £150 back as compensation but as these are highly valuable dvd i dont offer refunds because he could just copy them and send them back.
he even sent a letter to my distributor saying he was happy with the discs but i got it to paypal too late.
anyway paypal has just found in his favour and i have to pay back £300. and im -£260 in my account. i think this is a joke, hes still trying to make me offers before he posts them back by demanding £178 (because he found some dodgy seller selling them cheaper)plus any more dvds i may have.
im not paying anything.apparently what ever sales i make on ebay it will make this -£260 get closer to zero so i might just sell a load of stuff laying about around the house.
yes i had a delay in the designs for due to unforseen circumstances but this guy has been a pain in the arse.
to put it in context, a guy from new zealand bought all 39 at the same time, and paid £406 he got his designs at the same time as this other guy and hes been so patient and perfect and is going 50/50 with me on a future project.

This is about a shady customer and a personal time management problem, not PayPal. If there was a million dollars on the line, you would have found a way to avoid the dispute, which was completely preventable had you not been otherwise distracted.

A few weeks ago I put my rent check in the mail, and a week later discovered it bounced. Why? Because *I* wrote the check on the wrong freaking checking account! As a result, I was charged $35 by my bank and $50 by the rental company. What good is it to make a bunch of noise blaming the bank?

Vendors like PayPal have their policies. If you work WITHIN those policies, it's hard to get screwed. If you take you eye off the ball, miss something, then get knocked in the head, why blame PayPal?

Personally, I'm sick of all the whiners, especially here in the WF, who post rants about "PayPal screwed me!" when it's 100% their own fault -- either out of ignorance (they didn't read PP's AUP), because they failed to follow the rules, or they just took their eyes off the ball for a second too long.

This is BUSINESS! It's not Kindergarten! You won't get a kiss for an owie you caused yourself, along with a free do-over.

Maybe if people would take more responsibility for their own ineptitudes rather than blaming others, like PayPal, their successes would improve.

It's really simple "secret": follow the rules and you have an extremely high chance of NOT being blindsided by jerks who are trying to take advantage of you!

Because, like all communities, PayPal has rules which have never been written down and are inconsistently enforced.

A lot of people are of the opinion that PayPal should write these rules down and enforce them evenly across the board. And those people are not wrong.

However, what they are asking for - while it is not wrong - is effectively impossible.

So while PayPal does write down their policies and make their statements, those policies and statements are insufficient to keep your account in good standing.

But this is a reality of all business. You have to read between the lines and understand the unwritten rules. Everyone saying it ought to be easier is right, of course... but it's not, and it's never going to be, and it's not really PayPal's fault. It is just the way things are.

Haha i hope some serious contenders do well. We know all too well how scary it can be to have a single force monopolize the market (e.g. Google, msft etc.) I agree with their notion that cheaper fees is the best way to compete... when you have established market share like PayPal which is virtually accepted anywhere it's hard to compete unless you have a serious cost advantage

Now you ask them to buy through something that's a lot newer, and they might be skeptical.

I think there are some wildly differentiating views here on Paypal and other methods of online payment.

I think (here we go lol)...that competition is a great thing, it keeps companies on their toes and experimenting, offering the consumer something better more often and generally it can mean great news for us.

On the other hand, there are those people that will feel the opposite completely, that the competition merely makes it a more competitive marketplace to get more money than the company next to you.

While I agree with both arguments I still think that Paypal is the best of the evils at the moment. I think it is pushing other companies into wider areas and I think it is eventually going to become a much, much larger space online (the online payment industry).

Paypal may be beyond displacement now, but is it really? Could something better NEVER come along?

Then again if something better DID come along, would be so pessimistic that we all decide it is too good to be true and then it is pushed to the way-side leaving the behemoth STILL in the power chair?

It's late and I am rambling a little so forgive me, but I think that all online payment vendors are going to be good and bad, it just depends on whats best for you, which could depend on your country, age, amount of money you make, amount of money you withdraw, your purchases etc etc.

So take the good with the bad and let the good times roll.

    All the best troopers,

    Aarron

    From the Noca legal terms:

    17. Advertisements

17.1 Some of the Services are supported by advertising revenue and may display advertisements and promotions. These advertisements may be targeted to the content of information stored on the Services, queries made through the Services or other information.

17.2 The manner, mode and extent of advertising by Noca on the Services are subject to change without specific notice to you.

17.3 In consideration for Noca granting you access to and use of the Services, you agree that Noca may place such advertising on the Services.

Maybe this is just semantics, but I don't think so...

Seems to me, there's a big difference between 'alternatives' and 'competition'.

While any of the alternatives mentioned could develop into competition for PayPal, at this point in time none of them has. Google payments (sorry, Google haters) and Amazon are probably the top contenders, but even they don't have the reach to seriously compete right now. Certainly not a newly-launched payment processor which, judging by what Brian just posted, seems like an advertising medium more than a payment processor.

      Hi Michael,

The Intuit processor is for US-based merchants only, just like NOCA.

Noca is quite exciting with it's ease of use and reporting. I contacted Noca's helpdesk, and my questions were answered within the hour. Their XML-based scripts allow merchants to have the payment interface right in the web-pages. This is a premium in PayPal, called as PayPal Pro. Another good feature of Noca is not forcing buyers to register in order to pay, if buyers wished so.

For non-US and US, the best alternatives are still AlertPay Pro and AlertPay Merchant as well as 2CO. If I'm not mistaken, AlertPay has about 7 million users. That means, they have what it takes to support most merchants.

With the abundance of horror stories, I consider PayPal as a big business risk, even though it caters for many countries.

Yes, they are SOOO disinterested they came up with their own payment systems.

The fact is most people who buy things online and use Paypal would be very reluctant to change over and trust any other payment processors. Trust is still a huge part of ecommerce. There is no advantage to the buyers to trust or use any other type of payment processor so the preferred payment processor will be Paypal for a long long time.

As long as customers trust and prefer to use Paypal then vendors will also continue to use it. It would take a HUGE shift in things for anyone to knock Paypal off their perch.

        Sad but true.

Even to this day I see Paypal advertising in Adwords. If one of these giants would be interested in becoming a real competition to Paypal they would achieve it, but I can't see they are interested.

Based on what? Paypal is actually still growing with a quarter of a billion registered users with most analysts predicting continued growth. There's definitely no signs of decline.

As far as Noca is concerned, only time will tell. It would probably help their cause some if they actually finished their website and improved their "About" section.

Actually PayPal has a reputation that helps boost it up in the ranks with buyers.

You don't find many scams that use PayPal and if you do they fight for the consumer. I can't say the same about the other services.

Yes, PayPal does allow you to sell products that don't work as advertised but they all do. But you won't find any send $2 to the five people on the list and you will get $10,000 in the next week scams that use PayPal.

This reputation is what will help PayPal stay on top with the consumers, you know those people just spend and don't sell (like about 80% of internet marketers).
    {{ DiscussionBoard.errors[4595069].message }}
  • I was totally loyal to PayPal... until they froze my 3-year old, 6-figure strong, verified paypal business account for an "unusual transaction volume" (a Product Launch). I had called them in advanced and they said it shouldn't be a problem... well, a few days later, mid-way through the launch, it did apparently turn out to be a problem: the account was frozen until "further investigation"...

It took me like a week and 10 calls to get everything back in place...

    Lovely... just lovely...

I will never use PayPal for anything else than paying my outsource employees. They're too unreliable to be used as my main payment processor.

PS: As a consumer, they rock. As a marketer... thanks but no thanks!

I think one of Newton's laws is more applicable here.

"An object in motion will continue in that motion until acted on by an outside force."

In other words, PayPal isn't going to drop unless something stops them. And that something doesn't necessarily need to be another competing processor.

Sure, customers love them, but I won't use them. Instead, I will use a bridge platform (such as Plimus or any other) that integrates PayPal (plus credit cards) and I KNOW for a fact that they won't freeze my account no matter how much volume I generate, even if that means paying an extra 2% in processing fees. That way I get the best of both worlds.

In internet we pay for something if we trust. As buyer, i would rather use paypal than any other similar service, simly because i trust them.

PayPal increases buying conversion and as long as most IMarketers and companies won't switch massively to other payment processor, PP will be a leader.

    That's my 2 cents.

PayPal has a lot of competitions already, like:
    Google Checkout
    2 Check Out
    Amazon Payments
    Alert Pay
    and Moneybookers.

But none of them is considered the real PayPal competition. It's the people. If a lot people don't use that processor, it's hard for both buyer and seller to use that processor.

As someone mentioned above, customers like PayPal. As merchants selling IM and digital products, we obviously have a lot of major issues but the bottom line is that sales are stronger when PayPal is a payment alternative.

For an alternative payment processor to be a major benefit to us, it will need to gain widespread consumer acceptance and trust, which is what PayPal has done. New processors may come and go but to gain a foothold, the branding battle will be very tough and very expensive.

What we want is one thing, what consumers want is another. As always, demand drives the market.

I love PayPal, and I think they're a great payment processor. But I also hope they get some serious competition (preferably NOT Google Checkout though). There's nothing like some healthy competition to make a capitalist economy thrive.

Plus it forces business to improve themselves on a constant basis and offer consumers a better deal, which in the end tends to be beneficial for everyone.

EDIT: Just thought I'd mention the reason I don't want to see Google Checkout as the main contender is because I feel Google is too big as it is. I'd prefer something like Amazon payments, or a payment processor that isn't already owned by one of the internet giants.

Actually, this isn't true. Ryan Deiss split sent tens of thousands of visitors to one version of a sales page that offered PayPal, and another that didn't.

Offering PayPal on his site not only LOWERED conversions but ALSO increased refunds. Something to think about. The split-test is part of his Digital Marketer Lab so I can't post the details here since it's a paid product, but that's the gist of it.

This will make the playing field interesting, since the field of transferring and receiving payments are now coming into some competitions. This will also provide some options to consumers or people who are in the IM business.
I have read and have heard that there are a number of alternatives to PayPal but I could say that as of the moment, I think PayPal is still the widely used payment method by most people in the IM community. It is also due to the fact that most clients still prefer PayPal compared to other alternatives.

It's not really a good metaphor to compare Paypal to MySpace. For marketers, yeah, we spend a lot of time on that stuff. But the average user experience on Paypal is clicking a couple of buttons and seeing the confirm screen. They don't have much of a chance to get irritated at the service.

I've seen a dozen Paypal alternatives lying around, most of them were mentioned in this thread, but what do they have in terms of UI and experience that makes them better than Paypal?

Not one complaint....perfect feedback.....and after 180 days......I had to call them to get 100% of my money back.....WITH ABSOLUTELY ZERO INTEREST....WHICH THEY POCKETED BECAUSE THAT'S WHAT PAY PAL DOES WITH MILLION IN FROZEN ACCOUNTS.

I EXPOSED THIS ON MY BLOG TALK RADIO SHOW TO A MASSIVE AUDIENCE AND WAS THREATENED BY THEIR GYPSY LAWYERS WHO STRANGELY SEEMED MOST CONCERNED WITH ME TALKING ABOUT "WHAT DO THEY DO WITH FROZEN FUNDS RETURNED IN FULL....WHAT DO THEY DO WITH THE INTEREST THEY EARN AND BELIEVE ME THEY DON'T STICK IT UNDER A MATTRESS NOW DO THEY.????":confused::confused:

NOT AN AFFILIATE LINK: THE SHOW PAY PUKE'S LAWYERS TRIED 2 STOP...WONDER WHY? Over 4200 archived listens and counting....and educate yourself....love it or hate it....open ur eyes!

PAY PAL AND THE SCIM SCAM FLAM EXPOSED

Because Vinnie has never given a **** about lawyers I did the show anyway. I offered on the air...almost begged these *******s to sue me if I slandered them in any way. NO SUIT. NUFF SAID.

I will personally take a THIRD PARTY POST DATED CHECK.......before I ever take PAY PAL AGAIN....for the simple fact that they think it's their money and truthfully as long as it sits in that bogus non FDIC insured bank....it IS THEIR MONEY.

Amazing how Carnegie, Johnny Rock, and the rest of the original billionaires managed to make a dime without friggin' PAY PAL....HOW DID THEY DO IT???

please PAY PAL......KEEP FREEZING AND SCREWING WITH MORE HONEST MARKETERS.......AS I'VE BEEN SAYING FOR 5 GLORIOUS YEARS NOW.

DON'T THINK IT CAN HAPPEN 2 YOU'SE PEOPLE? OK. BUT WHEN IT DOES.....DON'T SAY YOU WERE NOT WARNED.

P.S. RUSS RUFFINO(ANOTHER HONEST MARKETER)....DAMN BROTHER.....SCREW ME ONCE SHAME ON PAYPAL....TWICE.......SHAME ON YOU........GET A MERCHANT ACCOUNT AND TAKE A FRIGGIN' FLAME THROWER TO PAY PAL. TRUST ME....YOU'LL DO JUST FINE.

It will be VERY interesting when the day comes and believe me.....I know a few things about this issue.....when pay puke will have to answer as to what they do with the "interest" earned on money frozen and then returned. I'll be in court for that. Cuz they owe me interest on my change they stole and returned. Sorry I don't kiss PayPal's ass and never will.

      peace,

      Vegas Vince

With all the BS Paypal has been pulling lately, especially for sellers it's not a matter of If it will be replaced, it's a matter of WHEN and BY WHOM. Paypal and Ebay's reputation is deteriorating, and it only takes one big player to step into the field (google for example like many of you have said) with some collaborations and their crappy system will be replaced by yet another crappy system

Yep! People are getting very sick of Paypal. They are a horrible company and their policies are a joke. I do hope someone snatches a huge market share from them.

I agree, I think PayPal has been dominating too long.

Yeah, I don't think anyone will be able to beat paypal... at least for the time being. It has already captured the market. The only way a competitor can challenge paypal is if they are able to introduce a few new features that will appeal to existing paypal users. Oh, and, of course, they need to have the giant ecommerce community using it. Otherwise, it will fail like all the others.

Google Checkout has been a competitor for a while, along with many more who are much larger than the one OP is suggesting.

  • I think the important thing is the ease of integrating it to your websites, paypal is pretty much a no brainer.

We can't still deny that Noca is a start-up company. Paypal has been in the business for several years already with a proven track record. And of course, the whole world already got the hang of using Paypal. Most people who are already on Paypal would not take the risk of shifting to another service. It's also backed up by E-bay! So, if Noca really do want to be a major player in the game, they will need to do a lot of catching up.

Well first time hearing this and nice one that, but its true that competition has to one if not on still, because moneybooker has also become now skrill. which is also ebay supported company and after Paypal is the only company which is directly available on the ebay.com

Why are you responding to all these threads from 2011?

PayPal did finally get some actual, realistic competition this year from Square, Stripe and Dwolla.

  • Thank God! I've had so many problems with Paypal, it's good to finally see some real competition - hopefully this will improve rates and service in the online payments industry.
