I don't mean the type of blog where you write about something and promote affiliate links. ( I'm assuming most people here have one of those.)

I mean the type of blog where you actually promote yourself and your services. In today's marketing day and age do you feel that a blog like that is necessary to succeed or just a distraction?

I have a blog. In fact I have several for several purposes. I have a social networking satire blog, a political blog, my personal blog that I do promote myself but mostly write articles that interest me at the moment. Then there's a membership blog and another blog to promote a different aspect of my business, so I guess the answer is yes, I have a blog. lol.

I register a domain name for my "real name", my intention is to use that domain to promote myself. I think it is necessary to have such a blog. I must confess I have not done much with the blog but it's a on my to-do list. I also register a domain name for my new son, he might need it in the future

Yes I have blog. I've yet to start promoting my services or product. Simply because I don't have any yet.

All I'm focusing on right now is building an audience and writing good content since it's actually something I'm passionate about.

When I've build a good enough audience. I'll look into ebooks and the sorts of things.

I did ... when I had services to promote. (There's nothing on it, now, but I still keep it in case I decide to put something else there. And it does have a name that might just about lend itself to that, one way or another.)

I think it's necessary. If you're promoting yourself and your services and you don't have a blog/site to do so, you're really putting yourself at a disadvantage.

I do have a blog I think it gives me more credibility than just having a sales page - it has posts that talk about my niche

    Yes I do.

I had my first one with a company called Pyra Labs around 2001. The name of their site may sound familiar: Blogger - Unfortunately, I didn't keep that one. It was in English.

Then I used a software called Greymatter. My first post from Aug 2003 is still online. This one was in Hungarian. They say I was one of the blogging pioneers in that language.
Later I converted it to WordPress.

After I discovered WordPress in 2004 I started another blog in English. Still online. It was a narrow niche that I loved and still do. (Although at that time I didn't even know about niches... it was just pure joy and fun.)

In 2005 and later I started two or three more... but later I just "merged" them into one. Not updated for about 2 years but still having 4-5,000/mo visitors. Written under a pen/nick name.
In the same year (2005) made my very first WP theme.

And I have a relatively fresh one on the 'myname' domain.

    That's it.

I don't have one yet but I'm planning to start one soon. I believe it would be big help in promoting yourself or your business now that almost everyone's online.

Anyone hear ever read the "the Millionaire Fastlane"?

In it, MJ Demarco (founder of Limos.com) speaks very highly of developing a "BRAND", beyond a "BUSINESS"...

....a Blog is your opportunity to brand yourself....
