Cut Your IM Expenses in Half...?

As the title of this thread suggests, today I cut a huge amount of my IM expenses in half.

I have a few hundred domain names I have collected over the years and when I first started out over 5 years ago, I had no idea who to register these domain names with so naturally I picked a service in my home country, Australia. I have been using this same company ever since.

The problem is their prices have continued to rise over the last few years to the point where it now costs me $19.95 to renew any simple .com domain and even more for some of the other extensions (.org, .com.au, etc).

I didn't purchase all these domains at once, they are purchases I made at random times over the last 4-5 years. For that reason it is usually only one domain that is ever due for renewal at any one time. So being the lazy person I am, I have always just paid the fees and moved on. In the back of my mind I have always been telling myself to get these domains moved elsewhere but all the work involved turned me off doing so.

Last week a bunch of the domains came up for renewal and finally I decided to take action (after all these years). I recently got a new NameCheap account for the purpose of transferring all these domains over and last week I initiated the transfer on all the domains and the process is happening as we speak.

It usually costs me several thousand dollars (4-5K+) to renew all these domains each year however by doing the transfer I will have cut my costs from $19.95 down to around $9 per domain - effectively I've cut the expenses in half and that will save me over 2 thousand dollars next year... and the next... and the next.

So, what's my point?

Surely I am not the only one. I know there are things we all put off doing as Internet Marketers and tell ourselves we will get around to it one day. The truth is a lot of these things are costing us money - whether it be money you could be saving or money you could be earning.

In this case a couple hours of work has resulted in an extra 2k + in my bank account each year. A pretty good trade off don't you think? Makes me wonder why I didn't do it sooner.

Do you have anything you've been sitting on for too long?

Definitely see your point here buddy.

By the start of the year, I had 90+ domains on Godaddy and Namecheap after the "Micro Niche Bonanza" from guru's last year.

Instead of renewing them, I decided to get rid of 60% of them and try to focus on my top 10 sites that makes me the most money or has the potential to.

Again, applying the 80/20 rule here.

I have an SEO team and even maintaining 10-15 sites regularly proved to be a daunting task.

But hey, if you have some good domains, drop me a PM. I'll be more than happy to take a look at them.

Hope this gives insights to some of the newbies in the forum.

Thanks for bringing this up Will. Great insight indeed.

    Yes, great idea mate.

Did this a few years back, especially with ongoing monthly subs.

First to go was 1 shopping cart and Ask Database.

so many free alternatives out there if you're prepared to look.

these days you can pretty much do most things for free.

hosting and domains in AU is a rip-off because the majority of biz owners are ignorant to what's available online.

Great post, Will. I like to go through my things as well and cut out what I don't use or need. Its always a good thing to do, to reassess things from time to time.
