5 Reasons You Should NOT Start Blogging

Blogging is a great way to share knowledge and make money but it is definitely not for everyone. It takes a certain type of person to start a successful blog and the reasons I give in this post are about the people who should NOT blog. These are 5 simple reasons that will tell you if you are not the right type of person for blogging.
  1. You are lazy and unmotivated. If you possess these two things then you definitely will not fall into the category of a blogger because you need to be motivated to write new posts for your blog and you must be productive. Creating a successful blog requires motivation because without it, you will most likely not be able to create new content.
  2. You are negative about life and the things you do. For me personally blogging requires positivity because it allows myself to reach out to others and share my knowledge in a positive and inspiring manner. If you are negative and do not show any upside to your writing, then most people will just exit your website.
  3. You lack passion. This kind of falls along the same lines of positivity except passion means that you care about your writing and what you produce on your blog. Passion shows your readers that you care and are into your topic very much, so it creates a more interesting and realistic experience.
  4. You give up easily. If you are the type of person to fall down once but refuse to get back up, then blogging is also not for you. Blogging requires a lot of time and patience. Within the time that you start to blog, you will most likely fail a few times and will have to make changes in order to create success. So if you are not a hard worker and do not want to put your time and dedication into a blog, then it is not for you. Remember that a successful blog is not created overnight and it even takes the greatest blogs some time to gain popularity.
  5. You think it is just about the money. If you have the mindset of JUST wanting money from your blog, then blogging is not for you because you need to have priorities set right in order to run a successful blog. I am not saying money is not a motivation for blogging but it should not be your ONLY focus when creating a blog. If you focus just on the money, then you may skip over other important things such as creating high quality content. Remember that you must always please your visitors first because without them, your blog would not be successful.

Agree? Anything you would add to the list?

I'd also add that some successful internet marketers don't spend all their time blogging and writing articles, they outsource the process. I certainly only write for my main business blogs.

Supporting articles and blogs I leave to my staff to write and I take a broad editorial oversight. I know I am not going to be able to focus on big picture issues if I am constantly updating hundreds of blogs.

Blogging is truly time consuming and requires total dedication. I truly believe, you need to have some kind of passion in you for blogging to last in it. In the beginning its all good and fun, but when you get passed that, if you don't have the passion for it and /or not committed, you will lose it quickly.

Excellent points you make! And those are the very reasons I don't blog. I know I would not stay committed to it, and I have no topic that I am passionate about.

      I'm with you, man!

I'm lazy and unmotivated, negative about everything, totally lacking in passion, I usually give up before I start, all I want out of life is money, and I also smell bad.

I'm pathetic and I deserve to die....

I disagree with all of the points you mention, they're not a requirement. I'm quite lazy when blogging to my site, yet it gets 80,000 uniques a month and earns a good few 100 dollars a month.

I think as a guideline you make a good point, however they're certainly not essential. Good post for would be bloggers none the less.

A friend and sometime mentor helped me with this one tip.
Write out a weeks story! arc. Chop it up into 5 or 7 pieces with the trail off on each one to suggest what the next days will be.

Upload it all into different posts and then time stamp them to release throughout the week. I did this once I fully understood the intricacies of it all.

Though I'm not blogging now (busy on other things) I have got over 250 posts Some good some not so, but I think that it being there helps me with a backlink...

    Hope this helps

Interesting list. I gather from this list that your perspective is that blogging is the answer... since your reasons for not blogging all have a negative associated with them.

I'm not saying blogging is the only answer. This is just a post for specifically blogging and to motivate people. Internet marketing and product promotion is very important as well but I usually see beginners start out with blogging so I tend to help them more.

While I am not an internet marketing trainer, it seems to me that many newbies starting out blogging might be the problem. There is a huge difference between direct response marketing and blogging. Most really good bloggers did it from the start with zero thought of commercial profit. They are already built that way. Monetization is easy when people really want to hear what you have to say. But, unfortunately most people are not that talented.

In my opinion teaching newbies how you built your little e-commerce store would help them more. They would be focused on selling something - which is how you make money.

I started out blogging and I turned out just fine . I think I learned a lot of valuable information from blogging. Plus the mistakes I made were definitely key to my current knowledge.

We all have our own opinions and although blogging may not be the #1 choice for making money online, it is still a great tool to learn. If someone starts out with blogging because it is their passion to write and share their knowledge with others, then I see no problem with that. Do what you love and learn how to make a profit from it.

I will teach almost anyone who is motivated to succeed, even if their ideas are based around specifically blogging.

Absolutely agree - How much of the 'blogging for money' trend is because those that are teaching IM say that a blog is better purely for SEO purposes?

I have a blog and a static site in similar niches and the static site takes far less regular work, was fairly quick to rank and makes me more money than the blog. (I am a lazy blogger )

    I love this post.
Whenever i get into a new niche i always see a website with no new content but old and outdated junks. It really feels unpleasant being inside those webs and feel disgusted that those sites are my competitors.. Hopefully many other bloggers aren't in the category i have just described

Great lists brian for those people who are just starting create their own blog sites. It is necessary that when you work, you enjoy what you do and you have the interest to work on it.
In addition, you should have a positive mind set on your goal and never be discouraged if you faced problems and failures. It is normal to experience setbacks, because it will help us teach us some lessons from it. You need to have the passion in what you do and not because you are force to do it, since the outcome or the result will always manifest on the work that you are doing. A work that was created by passion and motivation has a different result compared to the work that was half-heartedly done.
And the most important part of it, one should not work for it only because of money, but because you want to do it and are happy to do it.

I beg to differ, all this comes when you have not yet started leaping the fruits of the blogging.
patience is the key aspect in the whole of blogging, in case you expect to start earning the first two months then all this comments will come to be.

    Hi Brian,

Excellent point being made here. However, I think these 5 reasons go way beyond blogging. Any online business requires attention and focus.

Surely one of the best motivators ever!?

Brian, I think you have a good list, but I can't agree with this one...

You are negative about life and the things you do. For me personally blogging requires positivity because it allows myself to reach out to others and share my knowledge in a positive and inspiring manner. If you are negative and do not show any upside to your writing, then most people will just exit your website.
There are some extremely negative, depressing (to me), angry blogs that cater to and appeal to negative, depressing, angry people. Especially when you enter the realm of politics, religion and morality.

Number 5 is the golden one for me.

If people pick a blogging catergory just for the money they will be forever pulling there hair out when the money doesnt come in.

If your not passionate about a subject dont get into it, simple.

Thanks some great advice for the new guy.

  • I started my online "career" with a blog, and I made my first few thousand bucks with that blog...

That being said, I think blogging is a highly inefficient way of making money online: it's slow, it's hard-work, conversions as pretty low, etc.

If I was to start all over again, I could think of many more efficient routes than blogging.

I used to love blogging because it gave me a platform to 'express' my passion....but it lasted only a short time until I found out how I valued my time. I am in IM to make money. Coming to terms with that sure helped me 'let go' of blogging and focus on other more time and cost-effective lucrative ways.
But that doesn't make blogging any less valuable, not at all. Its how you value the way you use time and what you want to achieve out of each day.
